Chapter 845

“Y-You bastard! Do you even know who I am?!” Oscar’s eyes blazed red with fury. “I’ll kill you!”

Thomas’s lips curved faintly, his mouth parting to release words as cold as ice. “Then let’s see if you have the

ability.”

The contempt in his voice pierced sharper than any blade, shredding Oscar’s pride.

Never in his life had Oscar suffered such humiliation. Never had anyone dared look down on him so brazenly.

Ignoring the pain of his broken arm, he swung his other fist at Thomas in a reckless charge.

Thomas shifted back a step, then struck-a swift kick to Oscar’s shin, right at its weakest point.

“Arghh!”

Oscar collapsed, sprawling onto the ground in a pathetic heap. His aristocratic poise evaporated; he looked

more like a disgraced criminal than a noble son.

“Who the fuck are you? Tell me your name!” Oscar snarled through clenched teeth. His once-decently handsome face twisted in rage as he glared upward.

Thomas looked down at him from above, his gaze indifferent.

“You don’t deserve to know my name.”

Oscar’s eyes widened, disbelief flooding his expression. Never had he encountered such unrestrained arrogance.

No-arrogance wasn’t the right word. This guy wasn’t merely proud-he regarded others as beneath notice.

To him, Oscar wasn’t significant at all.

Not far away, Johanna stood frozen, staring at the cold, impossibly handsome Thomas. For a long moment, she

couldn’t breathe.

Moonlight spilled across Thomas’s sharply defined face, his features chiseled like a god’s-so striking, so

untouchable, it hurt to look at him.

And yet… this whole “rescue” had been staged. A trial she had arranged to test him.

A test to see if he was worth her devotion. A test to see whether he would risk himself to save her, or cower

before power and status.

But now, even knowing it was all just a show, her heart still pounded wildly, beyond control.

Thomas checked the time and turned to leave. Johanna darted forward and caught his sleeve.

“Thomas, where are you going?”

He glanced at her. “To find Sharon. She’s waiting for me.”

Sharon…

The name slipped so naturally from his lips that Johanna’s breath stalled. A strange unease twisted in her chest.

“Thomas,” she said softly, “could you stay with me for a while? I’m afraid if you leave, he…” Her gaze flicked to

Oscar. “He might try again.” 2

“He won’t,” Thomas replied evenly. “I’ve already crippled him. He has no strength left. He won’t touch you

again.”

Johanna blinked, startled. Words tumbled from her lips before she could stop them.

“But… I’ll be afraid. If you leave me here, and I run into another man like him, what then?”

Impatience flickered in Thomas’s eyes, though the night concealed it.

“I told you, Sharon is waiting. If you’re afraid of being alone, don’t you think she would be, too? If she were in danger, who would bear that responsibility?”

Johanna’s mouth opened, but she could say no more. If she pressed further, she would sound selfish.

Thomas no longer looked at her. He turned and walked away.

After only two steps, light footsteps followed. He stopped, glanced back, and frowned.

“Anything else?”

Johanna shook her head. “Nothing. I just don’t want to stay here alone… Don’t worry, I won’t interfere with

your work.”

Sharon was Carter’s employer. No matter what, leaving her alone in the back garden wasn’t proper.

Thomas regarded her briefly, then said nothing more. He resumed walking.

Johanna’s lips curved into a quiet, victorious smile.
