Chapter 161
“This is the perfect out for you right now,” Nate said coolly. “Take it while you still can. This talent showcase is being recorded, you know. Once it’s online, there’s no taking it back. You really want your most embarrassing moment living on the internet forever? Be the punchline to everyone’s jokes? Honestly, you should be thanking Kelly. If not for her, you’d be the laughingstock of the whole show.”
Wendy stared at him, stunned at how shameless he was. “So by your logic, Kelly dumping coffee all over Sharon was the right thing to do? We should be grateful to her for it?”
Nate didn’t flinch. “If you want to thank her, we won’t stop you. But don’t go blaming Kelly later just because you can’t pull it together onstage. We’re not taking the fall for that.”
Kelly tugged lightly at Nate’s sleeve, her voice soft. “Nate, let it go. I didn’t mean to, but… it was my fault.” 1
“You’re too kind, Kelly,” Nate said coldly, shooting a look at Sharon. “That’s exactly why people think they can walk all over you. Sharon, that’s enough. Kelly already apologized. Don’t drag this out. If your little drama ends up messing with Kelly or Theo’s performance, I won’t forgive you.”
Wendy looked like she’d just been hit with a frying pan. “Sharon… do they always do this? Twist the truth and actually convince themselves it’s real?”
Sharon nodded, completely unfazed. Clearly, this was nothing new to her.
Wendy let out a low whistle. “If I hadn’t seen it myself, I’d never believe people like this actually exist. To have their values more distorted than their faces…”
Nate wasn’t even embarrassed. If anything, he doubled down. “Everything I said is the truth.”
Sharon stayed calm. “Well, everything you just said-we recorded it. Should we upload it? Let the internet decide what the truth is?”
Nate’s expression changed instantly. “Don’t you dare post that online!”
Sharon tilted her head. “Why not? Scared people will hear you twisting the facts and call you out?”
“I’m not scared!” Nate barked.
“Then why not let me post it?” Her tone was light, but her eyes were sharp. “What, you don’t dare?”
His face turned red, but he still scrambled for an excuse. “There are kids here, okay? I just don’t want to involve them in adult matters and have them dragged into this mess!” 1
Wendy smiled. “Relax. I didn’t film a single kid. Just the adults. Oh, and don’t worry about image rights. I’ll blur out anyone who’s not involved.” 19
This time, Nate had no comeback.
“Enough.” The voice sliced through the tension like ice.
It was Carter, who had stayed silent up until now. “The showcase is about to begin. This isn’t the time for arguing.”
Wendy let out a cold laugh. “Wow. How touching. Where were you when Sharon was being attacked? Not a single word. But now that there’s nothing left to gain, now you speak up? What a warm, supportive family.”
Carter didn’t rise to her sarcasm. He turned to Sharon. “How do you want to resolve this?”
With time ticking down, Sharon didn’t bother dragging it out.
“Simple. Have her give me her dress. Whatever you want her to wear after that, however you plan to fix it, that’s your problem.
1/2
I’m not involved.”
Carter didn’t even hesitate. “That dress was custom-made for this performance. It matches Theo’s outfit. It can’t be given to
you.”
He paused, meeting her gaze. “Ask for something else.”
Chapter 162
“Or,” Carter offered, “I can postpone the performance and have someone bring you a new dress.”
Sharon’s expression was frosted over. “The dress I’m wearing was designed to match Matty’s outfit. Carter, there’s still a performance ahead. For now, I won’t go after Kelly for sabotaging me. I’ll deal with her after the showcase.”
A shadow crossed Carter’s face, something cold flickering behind his eyes. He looked like he wanted to speak-but bit it back, forcing his voice to stay steady.
“I’ll pay you ten times what the dress cost.”
Sharon let out a bitter laugh. “So that’s where we are now? You think I’ve sunk so low that I need you to throw money at me to make this right?”
His gaze hardened. “Then name your price.”
She glanced around. Too many eyes were on her. If she actually gave him a number, she knew exactly what kind of story Nate and the rest of the Biggs family would spin out of it. She hadn’t said a single word yet, but she could already feel their eyes, the judgment, the shift in the atmosphere.
She didn’t care what they thought of her. But she did care about Matty.
If the rumors started flying, it wouldn’t just hurt her-it would follow Matty too. His place in kindergarten, his friendships, his peace of mind… all of it could be dragged through the mud.
Her lips curled into a cold smile. “Carter, you’re my husband. Not standing up for me is one thing-but standing here in front of everyone, asking me to name my price? What is that supposed to mean? That I’m just some gold-digger to you?”
His eyes flickered. “That’s not what I meant. I’m just trying to fix this.”
They shouldn’t have been airing family drama in public, but Sharon had already ripped off the polite mask. There was no point pretending now.
“If you really want to solve the problem,” she said, voice sharp as glass, “then why not send a new dress to Kelly instead of me?”
Carter met her gaze, calm but firm. “Your dress is already ruined. Even if you wear Kelly’s, it might not fit. And if that happens, we both lose-and Theo’s performance takes a hit, too.”
Sharon’s voice dropped, cold and clear. “Let me make this perfectly clear, Carter. If anyone’s performance is affected, it won’t be because of me. It’ll be because of Kelly.”
“I know,” Carter said quietly. “But this showcase means a lot to Theo. He’s your son. Are you really willing to hold your ground over pride and refuse to budge, even just a little? After the showcase, ask for any compensation you want.”
Theo stood nearby, his face tight with stress, his fists clenched at his sides.
Then, a low chuckle rolled through the crowd, smooth and mocking.
“Carter,” came Xavier’s voice. “Don’t guilt Sharon into backing down by using her role as a mother. The showcase matters to your son Theo-what, it doesn’t matter to my son Matty? And about your generous talk of compensation…”
He smiled arrogantly.
“I’m Xavier Cooper. You think I need your tenfold payout? Or whatever kind of ‘compensation’ you’re offering?”
Nate scoffed, sneering. “If you actually cared about this showcase, you wouldn’t have picked Sharon to perform with your son. Honestly, when you brought her in, I thought you’d already given up.”
Matty stepped forward, chin lifted. “You’re not allowed to talk about Sharon like that! Sharon is awesome!”
1/2
Wendy arched a brow, voice laced with poison. “A phony like her thinks she can measure up to Sharon? What a joke. Where’s your shame?”
Nate exploded. “Unbelievable! I’ve met liars before, but none this shameless! Kelly graduated from Bell University, and you’re seriously saying she’s worse than some housewife?!”
Chapter 163
“I’ll just say it right now,” Nate declared, his voice loud and cocky. “Out of all the parents here today, not a single one can hold a candle to Kelly. If anyone disagrees, step up and prove me wrong.”
It was an arrogant statement-delivered without shame. The crowd stirred, surprised whispers rippling through the room.
But no one stepped forward.
The Bell University Conservatory of Music in Marcentine had a serious reputation. Tons of privileged sons and daughters from powerful families had tried to get in-hoping to boost their résumés overseas after failing to stand out at home. Most didn’t even make it past the application process.
This wasn’t the kind of school where you could pull strings or call in favors. It was a place for true prodigies.
Everyone here had been around the elite long enough to understand what kind of game Kelly was playing. After hearing the back -and-forth just now, most of them had already put the pieces together.
Wasn’t this just another classic case? A man doting on his mistress and tossing aside his wife? Even his own mother had turned on her daughter-in-law.
They’d all seen this storyline before. Nothing new.
Sure, Carter’s wife seemed pitiful-but beyond her pretty face, she didn’t appear to have much else going for her.
She was stunning-undeniably so. There was a timeless elegance to her look, a quiet grace in how she carried herself. Even in a room full of polished socialites, she stood out.
If Madeline hadn’t trashed her reputation, most people would’ve assumed she was a young woman from an established, old- money family.
Still, looks alone weren’t enough to keep a man’s heart in a world like this. In their circles, beautiful women were everywhere. And eventually, even the most breathtaking face lost its novelty.
The mistress-this gentle, soft-spoken woman-didn’t have the same striking beauty. But she had something else: talent.
She was educated and cultured. Who wouldn’t prefer coming home to a woman who could actually hold a conversation and understood their world?
It wasn’t exactly shocking that Carter favored her. Especially considering she had graduated from Bell University. Even without a powerful family or marriage connections, a degree from that kind of institution could open doors to the upper crust.
And if she set her sights a little lower-on families that valued intelligence over pedigree-she’d still be a top contender.
Trying to challenge her in her area of expertise? That would just be embarrassing.
“She really graduated from Bell? Damn, she’s the real deal.”
“Looks like first place is pretty much guaranteed.”
“I was hoping my kid might take first today… guess we’ll try for top three instead.”
“If the judges know her background, they’re gonna trip over themselves. Might as well invite her to join the judging panel.”
“For real-who here could actually critique her performance?”
Some people even started trying to cozy up to Madeline.
“Madeline, what instrument does she play? I might want to hire her as a tutor for my kid.”

“Looks like you’ve finally stopped chasing status and started recognizing talent. With the way the Biggs Group is doing, your family doesn’t even need political marriages anymore.”
“I’ll give Carter credit–he’s got good taste.”
Surrounded by a wave of admiration, Kelly-who had looked like she was on the verge of tears-finally started to smile.
People naturally loved an underdog. And Kelly had always been good at playing that role, using her vulnerability to win sympathy.
But this-this was different. For the first time, the praise wasn’t from pity. It was earned. It was hers.
The thought filled her with quiet satisfaction. She turned to Sharon, a slow, smug smile spreading across her face.
Then suddenly-a sharp, clear laugh cut through the buzz of compliments like glass cracking on ice.
“I disagree.”
Sharon’s voice rang out, cool and composed as still water.
“Kelly,” she said evenly, “how about a little competition?”
Chapter 164
Everyone turned to stare at Sharon.
Nate’s face twisted in disbelief. “Sharon, are you seriously challenging Kelly right now? Even professional violinists wouldn’t dare say that to her face. Did you grow some seriously big balls overnight?”
Sharon stayed calm, her tone breezy. “When it comes to the violin, I’ve never lost to anyone.”
Nate froze for a beat, then suddenly erupted into uncontrollable laughter. He laughed like he’d lost his mind, flailing his arms and nearly doubling over. 1
“Never lost to anyone? You? Who gave you the guts to say that in front of Kelly? Your mother?”
The crowd broke into laughter.
They didn’t think Sharon was arrogant-just absurd.
When the gap in skill is small, it’s called confidence. When it’s this wide, it’s just delusion. Laughable, really.
Right now, Sharon was nothing more than a punchline.
Even Madeline, usually so stern and proper, couldn’t stop the slight smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.
But not everyone laughed.
Carter and Theo stayed silent. Theo didn’t quite grasp everything that was happening, but seeing the crowd’s reaction made him feel like he’d been stripped bare in public-exposed and ashamed.
Carter’s expression darkened. “Sharon, quit saying things just to make a scene. Go back and get changed. I’ll have my assistant bring you a fresh outfit.”
But Sharon shook her head. “No need. I already said-I want the dress Kelly’s wearing.”
Nate scoffed. “Seriously? Can’t you tell Carter’s trying to give you a way out? Take it.”
Kelly let out a gentle laugh. “It’s fine, Sharon. I won’t take your words to heart. I’ll just pretend you were joking.”
Sharon’s smile didn’t return the favor. “Who said I was joking? Are we even close enough to joke like that?”
Nate snapped, “Sharon, don’t push it!”
Sharon shot him a cold look. “If you’ve got extra dignity lying around, donate it to someone who needs it. Don’t hand it to me—I
find it disgusting.”
Carter’s voice dropped low, his tone sharp. “Sharon, I know what Kelly’s capable of. Stop making a scene over nothing.”
Their voices had risen high enough to catch the attention of the judges, who were preparing to oversee the lot drawing. Curious
-and slightly concerned-they walked over. 1
“What’s going on here? Why all the commotion?”
Just as one of the event organizers started explaining, a sharp gasp came from among the judges.
A woman in her forties, wearing glasses, stepped forward with visible excitement and walked straight up to Kelly.
“Excuse me, are you Kelly Walt?”
Kelly blinked, a little caught off guard. “I am. And you are…?”
“Kelly, hello! I’m Lucy Cornwell from the Amstern Music Association. I’m one of the judges for today’s competition. I saw a
1/2
video of one of your performances online not long ago. When I spotted you just now, I thought I must be imagining things. I can’t believe it’s really you!”
Kelly smiled warmly. “Ah, the famous Lucy Cornwell. It’s an honor to meet you.”
Lucy waved her hands quickly, flustered. “No, no-please don’t call me that. I couldn’t possibly accept that, not in front of someone as talented as you.”
Then, as if remembering something, Lucy added, “By the way, did you happen to get the invitation we sent for our association’s last concert?”
Kelly gave her an apologetic smile. “I’m so sorry. I’ve been tied up preparing for another concert, so I probably won’t be able to attend…”
Before she could finish, Lucy cut in, clearly thrilled.
“Oh, no worries at all! Of course someone as talented as you must be incredibly busy. But if you ever have the time, we’d love to have you visit the Music Association.”
Kelly nodded politely. “I’d be happy to. I’ll stop by when I get the chance.”
Lucy’s face lit up. “Great! Kelly, give me just a minute-I’ll be right back.”
Chapter 165
Though Kelly was a bit curious, she nodded.
It wasn’t long before Lucy came back, holding a clipboard.
“Kelly, would you mind giving me your autograph?”
“Of course.” Kelly took the pen and signed her name with practiced ease.
Lucy beamed as she accepted the clipboard, then asked, “Are you here today as one of the guest judges?”
“No,” Kelly replied with a smile, gently pulling Theo closer. “I’m just here to support Theo for the showcase.”
Lucy looked down at Theo, and her eyes lit up with admiration.
“No wonder he’s your son. He’s extraordinary-you can see it right away. I wouldn’t be surprised if you two end up taking home the champion title today.”
Coming from a judge, that kind of statement was already stepping over a line.
Another judge, clearly unimpressed by Lucy’s behavior, raised his voice with a sharp edge.
“Lucy, who is this woman? A friend of yours?”
Lucy understood the implication but answered without hesitation.
“No, not a friend. This is Kelly Walt, a violinist I deeply admire. She’s a graduate of Bell University.”
At those words, the other judge’s expression immediately changed. The earlier arrogance vanished, replaced by a touch of
respect.
“She graduated from Bell University?” His eyes sharpened as he looked at Kelly. “In the past five years, we haven’t had a single musician from our country graduate from there.”
Effort counted, of course-but the ones who left their mark on music history were the truly gifted.
People like them, though successful within the industry, were ultimately just part of the crowd. Give it enough time, and no one’
would remember their names.
But someone from Bell University? That was different.
Now that they knew Kelly had studied there, the entire judging panel regarded her with a newfound reverence.
Kelly noticed Lucy had misunderstood her relationship with Theo. Almost instinctively, her eyes flicked toward Carter.
His expression darkened slightly, and he looked like he was about to speak. But Madeline placed a hand on his arm and quietly said, “Carter, what’s the point of explaining now? All it’ll do is humiliate Theo. If the judges find out his mother has such a disgraceful reputation, how do you expect Theo to face anyone? And what do you think people in our circle will say about our family?” (2
Her eyes flicked coldly toward Sharon. “I’m doing this for her sake, too. These judges aren’t nobodies. They’re respected experts, and their opinions carry weight. Strangers might forget-but once they find out she’s part of the Biggs family, they’ll bring it up every chance they get.”
As she spoke, the teacher in charge of maintaining order had already led the judging panel away.
Wendy, watching from the sidelines, was fuming. She stepped forward, about to speak.
“This is ridiculous! They’re just letting the judges believe she’s Theo’s mom-letting them run with it!”
1/2
Sharon held her back. “Let it go. Carter and I are getting divorced. Soon, I’ll have nothing to do with the Biggs family. Cutting ties like this… honestly, it saves me a lot of trouble.”
Wendy let out a cold snort. “Madeline used to look down on Kelly. But now that she realizes Kelly actually has value, look at them. —all fawning over her like lapdogs. Pathetic. They’re going to regret this.”
Clearly enjoying the praise, Kelly turned and met Sharon’s gaze-calm on the surface, but cool and edged with irony. She smiled, poised and polished, but there was a sharp glint of contempt and challenge in her eyes.
“Sharon, as long as you’re willing to back down, I’m happy to pretend you were just joking earlier.”
Chapter 166
Kelly’s tone was polite on the surface, but anyone listening could hear the message loud and clear-she was telling Sharon to back down.
Xavier quietly observed the exchange, then lowered his gaze to Matty.
“Matty, what did you think of Sharon’s violin playing?”
“It was really beautiful. It made me think of a word I just learned,” Matty replied.
“Oh?” Xavier’s curiosity was piqued. “What word?”
“Celestial music.”
Xavier chuckled. “And how does it compare to Kelly’s playing?”
“Sharon’s way better!” Matty said without missing a beat. “Kelly has such a mean heart-there’s no way she could play better than Sharon.”
In truth, Matty had never heard Kelly play the violin. But his bond with Sharon was strong, and his loyalty was unwavering.
Xavier could see that and didn’t push the conversation any further.
Across the room, Sharon heard Kelly’s words and responded with a faint smile. “Sorry, I don’t joke around with people I’m not
close to.”
The smile on Kelly’s face faltered just slightly.
Before she could respond, Nate’s voice rang out from the side, sharp and aggressive. “Sharon, you really don’t know what’s good for you. Kelly and Carter have been giving you a chance to walk away, and you still insist on being difficult? Think you can keep pushing your luck?”
He turned to Kelly. “Kelly, if she wants to compete so badly, then let her. Some people won’t know their place until they’re properly embarrassed.”
Kelly had lost face in her recent run-ins with Sharon. A part of her had been itching for a chance to get even.
She hesitated deliberately. “Are you sure that would be appropriate?”
Nate scoffed. “What’s inappropriate about it? She’s asking for it. Nobody else to blame.”
Kelly turned to Carter, her voice soft, almost performative. “Carter, maybe you could talk to her?”
A crease formed between Carter’s brows.
Sharon had been crossing the line more and more lately. Part of him agreed that she needed to be taught a lesson. But she was Theo’s mother, and the last thing he wanted was to see her humiliated in front of their son.
Keeping his tone even, he said, “Sharon, that’s enough. Don’t make this into more than it needs to be.”
Sharon didn’t even glance at him. Her eyes were locked on Kelly.
“If this is going to be a competition,” she said coolly, “then let’s raise the stakes.’
Kelly’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Alright. What do you have in mind?”
11
Sharon pointed at the necklace around Kelly’s neck. “If you lose, return my mother’s necklace.”
Kelly’s expression shifted. Her hand instinctively moved to the chain at her neck.
1/2
Chapter 166
She had just found out that the necklace had once belonged to Shayla.
Even though Shayla was Sharon’s mother, Kelly had always found it strangely hard to associate the two. They felt like they came from different worlds-like strangers.
Back then, she had insisted on keeping the necklace mostly just to spite Sharon.
Nate let out a mocking chuckle.
“Tsk, tsk. Trying to take back a gift Carter gave to Kelly? And you’re still claiming you’re not playing hard to get?”
Wendy shot back with razor-sharp sarcasm. “And you, Mr. Lapdog-are you deaf? Didn’t you hear her say it was her mother’s necklace?”
She turned a cutting glare on Carter. “Some people are truly shameless. Handing out someone’s family heirloom like it’s a party favor. And others-well, some just love clinging to the dead, don’t they? I used to wonder why. But now I get it. Must be planning to take it to the grave.”
Nate, face flushed with anger, moved to lunge forward, but Kelly grabbed his arm and held him back.
Being screamed at like that shook her-her usually calm facade was clearly cracked.
“I accept your terms,” she said, her voice directed toward Sharon. “But since you insist on a wager, then I’d like to ask something of you in return.”
Chapter 167
“Go ahead,” Sharon said.
Kelly held her gaze, her voice calm and deliberate. “If you lose, you’ll give me Shaluna.”
Wendy’s expression turned stormy in an instant. “Kelly, are you seriously addicted to stealing things that don’t belong to you?”
Shaluna, like the necklace around Kelly’s neck, had belonged to Sharon’s mother. But unlike the necklace, Shaluna was worth a hundred times more-both in monetary value and sentimental weight.
To be precise, it was priceless.
And Kelly knew exactly what she was doing.
If she lost, all she’d be doing was returning something that was never hers to begin with.
But if she won? She’d walk away with something extraordinary-without ever having lifted a finger to deserve it.
Kelly ignored Wendy completely, her eyes locked onto Sharon.
“Well? Do you have the guts, Sharon?”
“I do.” Sharon stopped Wendy from saying more. “There are enough people here as witnesses. No need to record or write anything down, right?”
Nate cut in with a sneer, “Just don’t go back on your word later.”
Time was short, and Sharon didn’t waste it arguing. She turned to Kelly. “The results will be based on the judges’ scores here. That fine with you?”
Kelly nodded confidently. “Perfectly fine.”
From the sidelines, Madeline spoke coldly. “Digging your own grave.”
Denise glanced at Sharon with something like pity.
Sharon gave a small nod. “Then it’s settled. Oh, one more thing-‘
”
Before she could finish, Kelly jumped in, her voice smug. “Sharon, don’t tell me you’re trying to back out now?”
The fact that Sharon had even agreed to the competition had already made Kelly feel triumphant. It couldn’t have gone better. Not only would she get to humiliate Sharon in front of everyone, she’d also walk away with Shaluna-cleanly, publicly, and legally.
It was the perfect double win.
But her satisfaction was short-lived. Sharon’s next words cut straight through it.
“Of course not.” Her gaze drifted down to Kelly’s dress. “But Kelly, since you ruined my dress, don’t you think it’s only fair to offer yours in return?”
Kelly froze. She hadn’t expected that to come back around.
Was Sharon trying to stall?
She hesitated. “Sharon, our body types aren’t the same. This dress was tailored specifically for me. Even if I gave it to you, it wouldn’t fit right. And besides, I’ve already worn it…”
“Carter said he’d have an assistant bring you a new one,” Sharon said smoothly. “Even better than the one you’re wearing now.”
1/2
Chapter 167
“Why don’t you just pick one from the new selection?” Kelly shot back.
Sharon didn’t flinch. “So after everything, you still don’t want to give it up?”
Kelly frowned. “It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just that-”
“Forget it. Don’t bother explaining,” Sharon cut her off. “It’s late. No need to waste more time on this.”
She turned to Wendy, Xavier, and Matty. “Let’s go.”
25 BONUS
Wendy was still fuming, but she knew better than to drag things out now. With a cold huff, she followed Sharon to the door.
Kelly, meanwhile, was still quietly patting herself on the back for getting away with ruining Sharon’s dress without facing any real consequences-
Until Sharon suddenly grabbed a glass of juice from the table nearby and flung it straight into Kelly’s face.
“Ah!”
Caught completely off guard, Kelly took the full hit.
Sticky juice ran down her perfectly made-up face, soaking into her white dress and staining it a bold, unmistakable yellow.
Chunks of orange pulp clung visibly to the delicate fabric.
Chapter 168
Everything happened so fast-too fast for Kelly to react, let alone Wendy, or even Xavier and Matty.
Everyone had assumed Sharon would just swallow the humiliation quietly. No one saw that coming.
Setting the glass back on the table, Sharon gave a faint, composed smile. “You ruined my dress. I ruined yours. Fair, right? Since you’re so against changing, you can just wear it as-is.”
With that, she turned to walk away.
But before she could take a full step, a hand grabbed her wrist.
Behind her came Carter’s voice-low, cold, laced with frost. “Sharon.”
His tone was sharp enough to cut. “Kelly already apologized. She said it wasn’t on purpose. Did you really have to go that far?” (1
Sharon jerked her wrist free.
“I don’t care if it was an accident or not,” she said, her voice firm. “She ruined my dress, so she doesn’t get to walk into the showcase in hers. Adults take responsibility for their actions. Not every apology deserves forgiveness.”
Her eyes-dark as obsidian, glimmering like wet stones-locked onto his.
“I’m not her mother. I don’t owe her patience or kindness. If you don’t want her to suffer, keep her away from me. Otherwise, I can’t promise what I’ll do next.”
And with that, she walked off.
Nate, face flushed with anger, made a move to block her, but Carter stopped him.
“She crossed a line!” Nate yelled, his voice shaking. “All Kelly did was spill a little coffee, and Sharon threw juice all over her!
Now her whole look’s ruined!”
Sticky juice clung to Kelly’s face and dress, and no amount of dabbing would fix it. She needed a full-on shower and shampoo.
As for her look? The hair, the makeup, the styling-it had taken over three painstaking hours to put together. And now? Gone.
The showcase was about to start. Even if they called in a stylist last minute, what could they possibly do in time? (1
Sure, Carter might be able to stall the show-maybe for thirty minutes at best. Any longer, and no one else would agree to wait.
The more Nate thought about it, the angrier he got.
“Sharon planned this! She wants Kelly off that stage!” he ranted. “If Kelly misses her time slot, Sharon’s going to turn around and accuse the judges of bias and try to get Kelly disqualified! That’s it! That’s exactly what she’s up to!”
Kelly stood trembling, her whole body tight with rage.
Her dress had cost way more than Sharon’s. And the styling-her look had been perfectly timed and meticulously arranged.
She clenched her jaw hard, fury boiling in her chest.
Just wait. She would make sure Sharon got humiliated before the day was over.
In Matty’s dressing room, Wendy was practically glowing with satisfaction.
“That was chef’s kiss,” she said with a grin. “If she’d just changed her dress like a normal person, she wouldn’t have had to redo everything. But now? She lost the dress and the look. Couldn’t have gone better.”
1/2
Xavier gave Sharon a thoughtful glance.
“You sure about this?” he asked. “Taking them on like that… Aren’t you worried Carter might retaliate?”
Sharon’s gaze was distant and cold.
“I’m still Carter’s wife. I’m still Theo’s mother. For a number of reasons, he can’t go too far with me. Not yet.”
Wendy frowned, her tone tight. “Sharon, he’s gone too far. You married him, gave him a son-and now he wants to toss you aside with nothing? No compensation? Nothing at all?”
Xavier stretched out lazily. “You really think that if Sharon agrees to walk away with nothing, Carter’s going to agree to the divorce?”
Wendy turned to him, realization flickering in her eyes.
“You mean…”
Chapter 169
“That’s just an excuse,” Xavier said quietly. “Carter doesn’t want a divorce. Even if Sharon agrees to walk away with nothing, he still won’t go through with it.”
Wendy snapped, “Did you see how the Biggs family acted just now? They didn’t even try to hide it in front of Sharon. Behind closed doors, I bet they’ve already decided Kelly’s going to be their daughter-in-law. If he’s that hung up on Kelly, then fine- divorce Sharon and marry her. But no, he wants to have it both ways. It’s disgusting.”
Xavier’s tone was calm, almost indifferent. “Carter’s logic is pretty simple. Sharon’s a good wife and a good mother. Kelly, on the other hand, doesn’t have much time left. Do you really think he’d toss Sharon aside for someone with only a few months to live?”
“So what?” Wendy snapped. “He thinks Sharon’s just some kind of backup plan he can crawl back to whenever it suits him? If he really wants to play dirty, what, are we supposed to just let him?”
Sharon’s voice cut in-cold and clear. “As long as he refuses to divorce me, I’ll make sure his world-and his family’s-gets turned upside down.”
Xavier’s gaze darkened, his eyes deep and still. “You’re not afraid he’ll go after your family?”
“I don’t have a family.” Sharon’s expression was unreadable, almost light. “If he really wants to try using them against me, I’d actually welcome it.”
No family-and yet she’d welcome that kind of attack.
Something shifted in Xavier’s eyes. A flicker of interest, maybe.
A knock came at the door.
His assistant stepped in. “Mr. Cooper, here’s Sharon’s new outfit.”
Xavier had arranged for a replacement as soon as he heard about the ruined dress. It was a white gown, similar in style to her original performance outfit.
As Sharon left to change, Xavier turned to Wendy.
“About her little bet with Kelly-should I have someone lean on the judges? Maybe tilt the scales a bit?”
Wendy blinked. “Tilt the scales?”
“Kelly might not have the best personality, but her skills are solid. I already ran a background check-she really did graduate from Bell University, and her grades were decent. It won’t be easy for Sharon to beat her.”
Wendy looked at him like he’d lost his mind. “So you looked into Kelly’s background, but you didn’t look into Sharon’s?” 1
“Hm?” Xavier looked genuinely confused.
Wendy scoffed, folding her arms. “Clearly, you didn’t dig deep enough. Sure, Kelly went to Bell, but so did Sharon-and
Sharon’s way better.”
Xavier raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t she drop out of high school?”
“Who told you that garbage?” Wendy fired back. “Sharon was a top student. She got a special admission to Bell University right after starting high school.”
Then something clicked in her head, and she let out a breath, realizing it aloud.
“Oh, now I get it. No wonder Madeline keeps harping on about Sharon’s ‘lack of education.’ She didn’t have her facts straight either-just like you.” 1
1/2
The showcase ended up being delayed by nearly forty minutes.
Not because of Sharon, of course-but because Kelly had to shower, wash her hair, and completely redo her hair and makeup.
Even then, as the first group took the stage, Kelly still wasn’t fully ready.
Forty minutes was already pushing it. Any longer and the other participants would’ve started raising hell. It would’ve looked like the whole event was being rigged.
In the end, after a quick discussion, the organizers decided to move both Sharon and Kelly’s performances to the very end of the
program.
Sharon only had to change her outfit-her makeup was untouched-so she quickly made her way to the audience and quietly took a seat to watch.
The first group was performing a piano piece.
As the lights dimmed and came back up, the talent showcase officially began.
Chapter 170
Music has a universal language all its own. Even though Sharon was far more skilled with the violin than the plano, she could eastly pass level eight without a problem.
On stage, a mother and daughter were performing a duet.
The mother’s piano playing was outstanding-steady, graceful, and confident. When the little girl missed a few notes, her mom didn’t miss a beat. She caught the mistake right away and smoothly guided the performance back on track.
Sitting beside Sharon, Matty leaned over and whispered in a low voice.
“Her name is Daisy Simmons. Her mom’s the daughter of the owner of Hart Jewellers. Daisy told me her mom’s really good at piano. She actually works part-time as a pianist. She started teaching, Daisy when she was just three.”
Sharon gave a small nod.
Daisy’s mom played beautifully, and despite her young age, Daisy held her own. She made a few mistakes, sure, but she didn’t freeze up. She quickly recovered and kept going. The little missteps didn’t take away from the performance at all.
If an adult had made those same mistakes, it would’ve cost them points. But for a five- or six-year-old? Her composure and ability to bounce back actually earned her credit.
And they didn’t just sound good-they looked great on stage, too.
Daisy’s mother was slender and graceful, with delicate features, and Daisy looked like a porcelain doll-sweet and charming.
When the piece ended, the audience erupted into applause-loud and full of admiration.
Wendy clapped along, nodding in approval.
“What a beautiful start! Oh, and Sharon, while you were changing, the kindergarten teacher came over. We’ve been moved to the final performance.”
“The final performance?” Sharon’s expression shifted slightly. “So Kelly goes before me?”
Wendy nodded, letting out a short, dry laugh.
“She needed to redo her whole look, get her makeup done again. There wasn’t enough time, but she insisted on performing before you. Honestly, shameless.”
Matty looked up, confused. “Isn’t going last a good thing, Wendy?”
Wendy explained, “Usually, yeah. The opener and the closer are the two prime spots. The opener sets the tone, the closer wraps everything up. But in today’s fast-paced world, closing isn’t what it used to be-especially in competitions. People get tired. After watching performance after performance, even the judges start to lose focus. The little details? They miss them. But mistakes? Those stand out more. And if someone earlier was amazing, everything that comes after just starts to feel… flat. It’s
impossible not to compare.”
Matty murmured, “I always thought the last spot was the best…”
“If it really were,” Wendy said with a smirk, “you think those parents would’ve given it up so easily?”
“Think about it. By the end of the show, the audience is restless. People are checking their phones, shifting in their seats. If the final act isn’t immediately impressive, they’ll start leaving. They figure they’ve seen enough. For the last slot to truly work in your favor, you need a big name and undeniable talent. Otherwise, all you get is an awkward performance in front of a half-
empty room.”
As she spoke, Wendy glanced at the scoreboard showing the judges’ ratings.
1/2
The average ninety-six.
A very high score.
“See?” she said, a hint of smugness in her voice. “In competitions, opening gives you the best shot.”
Chapter 171
“Since the judges haven’t seen anyone else yet, the opening act just has to avoid mistakes and deliver a few standout moments -it’s an easy way to rack up a high score,” Wendy said. “Even if the performers after are just as talented, it’s tough for them to
beat that first score.”
And just like she said, the next five or six acts couldn’t top the opener. Not a single one managed to surpass that score.
Watching the stage, Wendy tilted her head, a bit puzzled. “Huh? Isn’t this supposed to be a talent showcase? Why is everyone just playing instruments? No singing or dancing?”
After all, singing and dancing counted as talents too.
That’s when Xavier, who had been quietly observing the show, finally spoke up in a lazy drawl. “Singing and dancing don’t really belong on stage in our circles. In families like ours, we grow up learning music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. Even if we never use those skills later, they’re good for maintaining… a certain image.”
Wendy nodded, suddenly getting it. “Ah, that makes sense.”
The stage featured a variety of instruments-pianos, organs, cellos, violins.
One parent, who was also performing a violin duet, seemed to realize the competition was fierce today. Maybe they sensed that winning was out of reach, because they held back a little, and only managed to pull off a score in the eighties.
Wendy, meanwhile, was having a great time watching the show.
At one point, a teacher approached Sharon’s group, clipboard in hand.
“Matty’s group-please head backstage to get ready.”
“Got it. Thank you,” Sharon replied politely.
She took Matty’s hand, and the two of them headed toward the backstage waiting area.
Wendy called after them, her voice full of encouragement. “Sharon! Don’t hold back! Show them what you’ve got!”
Sharon gave a faint smile. “Alright.”
She wasn’t about to go easy-not with her mother’s necklace on the line.
Backstage, a few other families were still waiting for their turn.
The showcase was almost over. The top score so far was 98.
As Sharon stepped in, she could sense a subtle shift in the room. A few of the parents glanced in her direction, their gazes tinged with judgment. Some, recognizing who she was, deliberately turned their heads away, expressions filled with disdain.
They had clearly seen what happened earlier.
High society thrived on comparisons-lifting some up, tearing others down. Sharon may have been Carter’s legal wife, but without a powerful family name or elite education, she was exactly the type of person they thought didn’t belong.
To them, even a mistress had more value than her.
But Sharon didn’t care. She found a seat with Matty and began tuning the violin.
That’s when an irritatingly familiar voice rang out-before the face even appeared.
“Well, if it isn’t Sharon! You actually showed up for the showcase? I figured you’d fake a fainting spell at the last minute to get
out of it.”
1/2
She looked up to see Nate standing there with a violin in hand, Kelly at his side,
She glanced at him once, then looked away as if he were nothing more than a breeze passing by.
Nate looked toward the entrance, checking to see if Carter or Theo had arrived. When he saw they hadn’t, a smug smile spread
across his face.
He winked at Kelly. “Kelly, hasn’t she been giving you a hard time lately? Don’t worry-watch me take care of it.”
Kelly put on a practiced look of concern. “Nate, don’t go too far, okay?”
“Relax. I’ve got this,” he said, strolling toward Sharon without a care in the world.
2/2
Chapter 172
“Hey, Housewife, is it true what you said earlier? That you’ve never lost a violin match?” Nate’s voice cut through the room, loud enough to turn heads.
Sharon glanced over at Kelly, who stood nearby, clearly enjoying the spectacle. It only took a second for Sharon to realize what was going on.
“What, you trying to place a bet with me too?” she asked calmly.
Nate hesitated, caught off guard by how quickly she caught on. She was sharper than he expected.
“If you’re that confident, then yeah-why not make a bet?” he said, trying to sound bold.
Sharon’s expression stayed steady. “What kind of bet?”
Nate looked around theatrically, then raised his voice so that nearly everyone nearby could hear.
“If you lose, you get on your knees and bark like a dog. And if I lose, I’ll call you Mommy-or whatever you want. Your call.”
Sharon raised an eyebrow, unfazed. “You want to be my son? Does Theo know about this? I mean, I wouldn’t mind having another kid, but I doubt he’d be thrilled to have a brother your age.”
Matty let out a soft giggle.
Even a few of the onlookers-those who looked down on Sharon-couldn’t help but chuckle at her comeback.
Nate’s face twitched as he struggled to keep his cool. He clenched his jaw but reminded himself why he was doing this.
He leaned in a little. “What’s the matter? Scared you’ll lose to Kelly? That why you won’t bet?”
Sharon saw right through him.
“I’m fine with a bet,” she said smoothly. “But let’s change the terms. If you lose, you get on your knees and bark like a dog. I’m not interested in adopting a disobedient son.”
Nate’s jaw tightened, his temper visibly bubbling
“Fine. Loser gets on their knees and barks like a dog. And just to be clear any “accidents’ like fainting, broken strings, or some last-minute excuse to not go onstage… that all counts as a loss. Deal?”
Her voice stayed even. “Deal.”
Nate barely contained the excitement rising in his chest. “Then it’s settled ”
He had already hit record on his phone. If she backed out later, he’d post it everywhere. She’d never live it down.
A few minutes later, Carter and Theo walked in.
Theo spotted Sharon across the room. His little face twisted with a mix of anger and disappointment. He turned away, refusing
to look at her.
Mom had gone too far. Just to mess things up, she dumped juice all over Kelly. She never used to act like this. It had to be that annoying Matty saying bad things about Kelly again!
One by one, the contestants and their parents were being called backstage.
Soon, it was Kelly and Theo’s turn to head back and get ready.
A screen in the waiting area showed a live feed from the stage.
1/2
She looked up. Her face instantly darkened.
“Carter. What do you think you’re doing?”
He hesitated, then said, “Don’t go onstage.”
Her lips curled into a sharp, cold smile, but her eyes were razor-sharp. “And if I do, what then? Planning to lock me up somewhere?”
There was a flicker of caution in her eyes. She looked around, sizing up the room.
If he really tried to stop her-how fast could she run? Could she make it back to the stage in time?
A shadow passed over Carter’s face-part disbelief, part fury. “Sharon… is that really what you think of me?”
She gave a low, bitter laugh. “Depends. What have you done to make me think otherwise?”
He opened his mouth, about to speak-but no words came out. Whatever it was he’d meant to say, it never made it out.
2/2
Chapter 173
Carter suddenly came to a realization-he had never actually done anything for Sharon.
Seeing the irony in her eyes, his own gaze wavered for a moment.
His voice was low, heavy with emotion. “You’ve got it wrong. I just want to help you.”
Sharon’s reply was cool and sharp. “Don’t try to pass off helping Kelly as some noble gesture. If you really wanted to help me, you wouldn’t have stood by while they dragged my name through the mud. And you definitely wouldn’t be here, asking me to back out of the performance.”
Carter looked at her intently. “Sharon, don’t be impulsive. Kelly’s really talented. You’re not going to win this bet. The only way to avoid losing is not to perform. Do you really want Theo to see you fall flat on your face?”
He paused, then added, “As for the necklace-if you’re willing to lend Kelly your violin, she’ll return it. Once her concert is over, Shaluna will be back in your hands. If you agree, I’ll take care of everything. Don’t worry-Kelly won’t make things hard on you.
Sharon gave a slow, deliberate clap. “Wow, Carter. The first time you’ve ever come close to caring about my feelings. I’m touched. Really.”
But there was not a trace of gratitude in her expression-only biting sarcasm.
Carter’s brows furrowed.
Then Sharon seemed to remember something. “Oh, and about that violin-if I don’t agree to lend it, you’re not planning to return my mother’s necklace, are you? And all that help you just promised? That’s gone too, I assume?”
Carter’s eyes darkened, unreadable. “I think you know what the smart choice is.”
“I’m done here,” Sharon said flatly, her tone laced with irritation. “Move. I’ve got a performance to get to.”
With that, she took Matty’s hand and stepped around him.
Carter hadn’t expected her to be so unyielding. “Sharon, do you have to be this stubborn?”
She paused briefly, then turned and met his eyes head-on.
“If you really want to help me, then have Kelly drop out. Her quitting the performance would have the same effect as me stepping down.” 1
She drew a breath.
“Why is it always me who has to back off? As long as everyone else is happy, it doesn’t matter if I’m the one who takes the hit, lowers my head, or swallows the pain? Is that what you think?”
Carter was stunned. 1
By the time he found his voice again, Sharon was already gone.
Backstage, the curtain loomed just ahead. Kelly was stepping onto the stage to perform.
Matty looked up at Sharon. Her face was tight, unreadable.
“Sharon… are we going to lose?”
He had been watching everything-the tension between her, Kelly, and Nate. Even when others doubted her, he never said a word. Because deep down, he believed in her.
1/2
Chapter 173
He believed Sharon would win. That she’d prove them all wrong.
But now, as the moment closed in, he couldn’t shake a creeping sense of unease.
Sharon looked down at him. Her eyes were filled with an unshakable certainty.
“Don’t worry, Matty. We’re going to win.”
The tension in Matty’s body eased.
As they spoke, the stage lights suddenly dimmed.
Kelly and Theo’s performance was about to begin.
Minutes passed, then the lights brightened once more.
Kelly stood alone under the spotlight. She looked stunning-delicate features, elegant presence. The white dress she wore added to her cold, dignified aura, making her seem untouched by the messiness of the real world.
Beneath the spotlight, her flawlessly made-up face looked distant, almost unearthly.
Then the music began.
It flowed gently, soft and comforting, like a stream washing over the soul. It was clear, lyrical, and deeply moving.

Chapter 174
Seated in the audience, Wendy’s expression shifted slightly as Kelly’s performance filled the hall.
“So she’s not all pout and dramatics after all,” she muttered. “Turns out Kelly actually has some real skill… Just judging from this piece, she’s had at least ten years of training.”
Next to her, Xavier added, “She’s huge online right now. Tons of hardcore fans. Sure, some of that’s thanks to Carter’s PR team, but she’s definitely talented.”
Wendy had always known Kelly as an “internet celebrity.”
Constantly in the media, tangled in rumors with Carter, trending every other week. Her name popped up almost every time Wendy scrolled through the news. She’d even seen thumbnails of Kelly playing the violin more than once.
But she’d never clicked on a single one.
To her, Kelly had always seemed like the type who thrived on playing the victim-just another professional damsel in distress. The labels-“violin prodigy,” “the most beautiful woman in classical music”-only made Wendy roll her eyes.
People who lacked real skill were the ones who needed to rely on hype and internet buzz.
Still, even she had to admit-Kelly definitely had what it took to get into Bell University.
If today’s bet had been made by anyone else, they probably wouldn’t stand a chance.
Noticing Wendy’s silence, Xavier glanced over. “You don’t really think Sharon’s going to lose, do you?”
Wendy blinked out of her thoughts. “Of course not. I’ll give Kelly her due-she’s talented. But her level? Compared to Sharon,
it’s not even close.”
Xavier raised a brow. “Sharon’s really that good?”
“You think I’d lie to you?”
Still looking skeptical, Xavier said, “You’re the one who told me not to step in. If she loses, don’t blame me for staying out of it.”
Wendy pressed her lips into a thin line, clearly irritated. “Why does everyone keep acting like Sharon doesn’t have what it takes?
“It’s not that I don’t think she’s good,” Xavier replied. “It’s just… even if she’s great, hasn’t she gone almost five years without seriously playing the violin?”
Wendy let out a small, awkward cough. “She’s been practicing lately… And even if she hadn’t picked up the violin in five years, she could still beat Kelly. No question.” 1
Her confidence returned.
“If Sharon were at her peak, she’d blow her off the stage.”
On stage, as Kelly finished her solo, the lights brightened beside her.
Theo appeared in the spotlight.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his hair neatly slicked back, he looked every inch the refined young gentleman. Standing beside Kelly-her in white, him in black-they made a striking duo. The coordinated outfits highlighted both of them beautifully.
Clearly, the makeup mishap earlier hadn’t shaken Kelly in the slightest.
1/2
Elsewhere in the audience, Denise watched the performance with wide eyes.
“I don’t know much about violin,” she said, “but this is amazing. No wonder she went viral-she’s the real deal.”
Even Madeline, who was notoriously hard to impress, showed a rare look of approval.
She even offered a few candid words. “Back when our family was still climbing, we needed a strong marriage alliance. That’s the only reason I turned her down. If it were today, I might’ve supported the match.”
Denise turned to look at her. “But in the end, Carter ended up with Sharon, who’s not even in the same league as Kelly. She’s nowhere near as impressive.”
At the mention of Sharon, a flash of distaste crossed Madeline’s eyes.

Chapter 175
Chapter 175
“If I’d known Carter would end up marrying someone like Sharon-a clueless girl who didn’t even finish high school-I would’ve just let him be with Kelly from the beginning,” Madeline said bitterly.
From the side, Nate chimed in, “I seriously can’t wait to watch Sharon get humiliated.”
Since Kelly needed to shower and redo her makeup, they had originally planned for her to perform last. It would buy her more
time.
But then Nate came up with a better plan.
If Kelly performed last, Sharon would have to go on before her.
Sure, Sharon didn’t stand a chance-Kelly’s talent was on a whole different level-but Nate wanted Sharon to see that for herself. To witness firsthand just how far apart they really were.
Let her fall apart on stage. Let that be the last time she dared to compete with Kelly.
And if Kelly went first-dazzling the judges, stunning the audience-then by the time Sharon stepped onstage, everyone would still be wrapped up in the glow of Kelly’s performance. No one would care what came next.
Sharon would be nothing more than a footnote.
It was the perfect setup.
Nate proposed the switch to Kelly, and she agreed without hesitation.
By now, the judges sitting in the audience were clearly exhausted. The long showcase had taken its toll.
Some were rubbing their temples. Others stifled yawns. A few even wore open expressions of fatigue.
The children in the audience, especially the younger ones, had started to nod off.
Several people had already slipped out for air.
But then, as the first soft notes spilled from Kelly’s fingertips, the room fell silent.
Something changed.
The music was light, soothing-like water flowing over smooth stone. Clear and fluid, each note seemed to move on its own,
like tiny, living things.
Kelly’s fingers moved like they had a will of their own.
The spotlight overhead cast her in a soft, almost dreamlike glow. The violin at her shoulder gleamed like cut crystal, mysterious
and endless.
It was a stunning blue-like the ocean in the dead of winter.
From it came music so delicate and pure, it felt like a mountain spring washing straight through the heart.
“Damn,” Wendy muttered under her breath. “That violin… it’s way better than Shaluna. And she still wants to take Shaluna from Sharon?”
Even Xavier looked visibly shaken by the sound, his attention completely captured.
He turned to Wendy. “Shaluna’s one of the ten most legendary violins in the world. Are you saying the one Kelly’s playing is even better?”

Wendy shook her head slowly “That’s not the point theme gre We need plays Teas, ‘sary excellent, but what gives it real value is the soul behind it the many, the story”

By the end, hardly anyone remembered he’d even been onstage.
As the final note lingered in the air, the audience erupted-loud, sharp, and thunderous applane,

Chapter 176
The murmurs in the audience swelled like a rising tide.
“Wow. I didn’t expect Kelly to be that good on the violin.”
“She’s better than the private tutor I hired for my kid.”
“My friend’s a top-tier professional violinist, and even she’s not at Kelly’s level.”
“No wonder Carter treats her like a queen. One song from her, and all my stress just melted away.”
Over at the judges’ table, a rare consensus appeared: 99.9.
Not quite a perfect 100-because of Theo. (1
Kelly’s solo performance had deserved full marks, no question. But this was a duet. And next to her brilliance, Theo’s playing came off a bit plain. The 0.1-point deduction wasn’t a knock on him-just a quiet nod acknowledging his role.
Even so, that score launched Kelly and Theo straight into first place.
Kelly was satisfied. Her technique, her delivery-everything had gone exactly as she envisioned.
With Theo by her side, she gave a slow, elegant bow and stepped off the stage. Her lips curved into a calm, confident smile as she returned to her seat.
Nate flashed her a thumbs-up. “Flawless. Everyone’s totally hypnotized. When Sharon goes up, no one’s even going to be paying attention.” 1
Then, as if struck by sudden inspiration, he whipped out his phone and started a livestream.
“Sharon, you smug little thing… Just wait. I’ll make sure the whole world sees you crash and burn.” 2
Just like Nate predicted, even after the stage lights dimmed, the audience didn’t stop buzzing.
By the time the lights came up again and Sharon and Matty were standing under the spotlight, hardly anyone noticed.
They were still caught up in the magic of Kelly’s performance.
Wendy scanned the room, her expression dark. The audience was whispering and chatting, completely ignoring Sharon.
Even the judges seemed distracted, still murmuring among themselves..
That’s when it hit her.
Kelly had planned this-going right before Sharon, grabbing all the attention so nothing afterward could compare.
“Shameless,” Wendy muttered.
But Xavier remained silent, eyes fixed on the stage.
Then the violin music began.
At first, the sound barely registered. The background chatter continued, indifferent.
But slowly, something began to change.
The noise faded-gently, almost without notice-until the entire hall fell quiet. 1
1/2
All eyes turned-gradually, without realizing-to the stage.
People had seen Sharon before. Her feud with Kelly had been loud, dramatic, messy-great gossip. She had no background, no formal education. Most people thought she was just a pretty face.
In elite circles, real respect came from heritage, brains, and skill. Good looks meant little. And that’s all she had, right? Just her looks?
That’s what everyone thought-shallow, quiet, unimpressive.
But now, under the stage lights, something felt different.
The way she stood. The way she moved. Even the focus in her eyes-it had all changed. She was completely locked in, like the world had narrowed to just her and the violin.
Music flowed from her fingers-fluid, weightless-like time itself slipping through cracks.
Each note shimmered, crisp and clear, winding like a silver stream.
The golden stage lights washed over her pale, graceful face, softening her features until she looked almost ethereal.
Her slender fingers drew out a sound so beautiful it felt like magic-music and musician melting into one, soul and sound fused together.
In that moment, the world held its breath.
2/2
Chapter 177
The music filled the hall, wrapping around every ear like a spell There was nothing else-just the voice of the violin, echoing again and again in everyone’s mind, too beautiful, too surreal to be real.
The entire hall was silent. Not a single cough, not a rustle. Everyone sat frozen, their eyes fixed on Sharon-wide-eyed, stunned, caught somewhere between disbelief and awe,
Even Nate, who still held his phone ready to broadcast her humiliation to the world, couldn’t look away.
He’d gone all in to ruin her. Poured hundreds of thousands into pushing his livestream to the front page, front and center-top of the homepage, impossible to miss.
The second he hit “Go Live,” tens of thousands of viewers flooded in.
Before Sharon started playing, the feed was filled with noise-chatter from the crowd, the messy buzz of people anticipating drama. Viewers assumed there’d been some mistake or accident. Maybe even a scandal. Something juicy,
This was the internet at its best-nobody looked away from drama. They watched it blow up.
So they stayed. Waiting for the trainwreck.
Then Sharon played.
And for the next few minutes, something weird happened: the comment section went completely dead.
Not a single word. No “LOL,” no “what’s going on,” not even an emoji. Just a strange, suspended silence, like the entire internet was holding its breath.
Then the last note faded out.
And the screen exploded.
Comments flooded the chat like a dam had broken so fast that even Nate’s high-end phone started lagging from the overload.
[Oh my god! I don’t even like music, but that was… I couldn’t look away.]
[I do know music. Studied it. This girl’s better than John Westin. Yes, that John Westin!]
[Crap, I forgot to screen-record I was too into it! Please, someone send a clip! I’ll owe you forever!]
[Okay but… is it just me or is she insanely gorgeous?? Who is this??]
[She’s unreal. I’m literally about to cry. I want to lick my screen.]
[I followed you, streamer! Now move the damn camera! I can’t see her face!]
[Quick! Let’s send her some gifts! Maybe she’ll play another piece!]
Nate finally snapped out of his trance-just in time to see the chaos explode on his feed.
His jaw dropped when he checked the viewer count.
In under five minutes, it had skyrocketed into the millions.
His follower count? Surging by the hundreds of thousands, climbing faster by the second like a rocket.
Before he could even react, his stream hit #1 on the real-time trending charts.
Meanwhile, top streamers across the platform were scratching their heads, watching their numbers tank.
1/2
“Guys, is my Wi-Fi glitching? My views are tanking.”
Some fans who’d just logged off noticed something was up and jumped back in.
[Apparently, some rich dude paid a fortune to push a stream to the front page. Worth checking out.]
Word spread fast. Other influencers got curious and clicked in.
And after hearing Sharon play, they didn’t hold back. Digital gifts poured in-coins, tips, animations, fireworks.
[She’s gonna blow up. I’m dropping gifts now so she remembers my name.]
This girl’s gonna blow up. I’m dropping gifts now so she remembers my name.
[Hey gorgeous, I followed you! Let’s collab sometime, yeah?]
[New fans, let’s gooo! Spam those likes!]
The screen lit up with effects, gifts, and animations-endless and unstoppable.
Watching it all unfold, Nate’s right eyelid twitched violently. A surge of rage shot through him so fast, he could barely breathe.
He hadn’t spent hundreds of thousands to promote Sharon. He’d spent it to destroy her.
2/2
Chapter 178
Nate clenched his jaw, ready to shut the livestream down.
But whether it was rage or sheer disbelief at Sharon’s talent, his hand wouldn’t stop shaking. His finger hovered over the button, trembling-yet it wouldn’t press.
He sucked in a few deep breaths, trying to steady himself. Finally, his nerves settled just enough to jab at the “End Stream”
button.
And right then, his phone froze again.
The tidal wave of comments, the nonstop gift animations, the swarm of viewers pouring in to catch a glimpse of the girl onstage
it overwhelmed everything. Not just Nate’s phone. Even the platform’s servers started to lag.
Nate lost it. “Damn it! Damn it! Shut it off! Shut it off!”
He slammed his finger against the button over and over until finally, the app crashed-and the stream went black.
When Kelly finished her piece, the audience had been present enough to remember to clap.
But when Sharon finished, no one moved. Nearly a full minute passed in complete silence.
Then, from somewhere in the crowd, a single clap broke through.
It broke the spell-and a thunderous wave of applause followed, far louder than before.
If not for the formality of the venue, people would’ve been on their feet, cheering, whistling, screaming their praise.
What they’d just witnessed wasn’t merely a performance. It was an experience-intoxicating to every sense.
Even without the music, the visual alone-her poise, her stillness, the way she commanded the stage-was breathtaking.
They could laugh at Sharon’s background, mock her lack of pedigree. But they couldn’t deny her beauty. Even if, in their world, beauty wasn’t worth much.
In that moment, though, she radiated. She glowed. She was stunning in a way that made it hard to breathe.
The judges, jolted back to the moment, sat shaking with emotion. Their faces flushed, their hands unsteady as they lifted their scorecards-unanimously.
All tens. No debate. No hesitation. No need for words.
“My God. I’ve never heard anything like that in my life.”
“Kelly didn’t even come close. Not a tenth of this.”
“No exaggeration-this was the most moving performance I’ve ever seen. Hands down.”
“Now I finally get what ‘lingering notes that stay for days’ actually means.”
One sharp-eyed judge added, “Did anyone else catch Matty’s solo in there? I almost missed it—it flowed so seamlessly.”
“There wasn’t a single flaw. Not one.”
“Even Theo’s duet earlier didn’t feature a Theo solo!”
In truth, more than two-thirds of that group’s piece had been Kelly soloing. Only a third was duet.

Wendy glanced around at the room full of flushed, excited faces and enthusiastic preise. Her om express did’thug surprise. No awe, just calm certainty.
“This was Sharon’s signature piece-White Moonlight. It’s already one of the top ten classics at Pell University Conatyrory of Music. Beating Kelly? That’s no challenge for her,”

Chapter 179
“This time, Sharon rearranged the piece,” Wendy said. “She tailored it to fit Matty’s strengths-recomposed it with him in mind. From now on, White Moonlight can be performed as a duet.”
Xavier spoke up. “I believe you now.”
The audience seats were still shrouded in darkness. No one could see Xavier’s face-just his voice, low, husky, and resonant.
“She’s… truly extraordinary.”
Wendy shifted her gaze toward the Biggs family’s section.
“They said Sharon was just copying Kelly. Said she was nothing but an imitator…” A small, cold smile curved her lips. “Well, now they’ve seen what she’s capable of.”
Across the aisle, Madeline and Denise sat frozen, staring at the stage.
When Sharon had first started playing, they’d still been sneering, tossing out their usual insults in low murmurs.
But somewhere along the way, the mockery had stopped. Neither of them could say exactly when.
Denise’s jaw hung slack. “Mom… wasn’t Sharon supposed to be useless? Just some pretty little airhead? How the hell does she know how to play the violin?”
And not just play-what Sharon had done went far beyond that. This wasn’t just skill. It was something else entirely. Something transcendent.
Madeline looked just as shocked. Her eyes betrayed a disbelief she couldn’t conceal.
To the average person, the music might have sounded pure, clear, and beautiful-like spring water flowing over smooth stone.
But to anyone who actually understood violin?
It was breathtaking. Flawless. Genius.
Wasn’t Sharon supposed to be talentless?
Hadn’t they all agreed that, at best, she’d scrape by with a few squeaky notes-and at worst, sound like nails on a chalkboard?
So why… why had it been the exact opposite?
Meanwhile, Kelly sat rooted in her seat, eyes fixed on Sharon. Her lips were pressed into a bloodless line, and her wide eyes gleamed with disbelief. Her body trembled, like it was rejecting what it had just witnessed.
She shook her head again and again, whispering under her breath, “No… no way… This can’t be happening…”
Kelly had always believed in her talent.
Sure, she wasn’t world-class yet-but she was damn close. At her conservatory, she ranked consistently in the top ten. That was proof enough of her ability.
She’d gotten into Bell University. Her skill, her hard work-they were real. Undeniable.
She knew she couldn’t compete with Sharon when it came to looks.
But the violin? That was her domain. Her battleground. Her pride.
She’d always had absolute confidence she could beat Sharon at something that really mattered.
In her mind, Sharon had always been nothing more than a pretty face. A shallow girl who flirted and schemed her way upward.
1/2
Someone decorative. Built to produce heirs and smile for the cameras-nothing more.
Beautiful, sure-but empty. Undeserving of Carter. Unfit to be Mrs. Biggs.
She’d always believed that if Madeline hadn’t pushed her out back then, she would be the one standing beside Carter now. She should’ve been Mrs. Biggs.
And now that she was back, she was going to dismantle Sharon piece by piece. Tear down that perfect mask. Make her feel small.
Powerless. Insignificant.
And today-today was supposed to be her big moment.
She was going to win the right way-by doing what she did best.
But even that her greatest strength-had been blown away.
Sharon hadn’t just won. She’d crushed her. Completely.
Kelly’s pride was in shambles-shattered without mercy.
She couldn’t accept it.
She refused to accept it.
After the judges finished scoring, Sharon and Matty bowed in sync, then began walking slowly offstage.
But just as Sharon reached the curtain, she saw someone waiting in the wings.
Carter.
He stood quietly, just a few steps away. His gaze locked onto hers-dark as a frozen lake, still as a midnight sky. His eyes shimmered with something soft. Something unfamiliar.
She had never seen him look at her like that before.
So intense. So focused.

Chapter 180
When Matty saw Carter, he thoughtfully turned to Sharon and said, “Sharon, I’m going to rest now. Come find me when you’re done talking.”
Sharon nodded. “Alright, go ahead.”
She wasn’t leaving without her mother’s necklace. Whether Carter and Kelly would actually honor the bet-that was another matter entirely.
But it didn’t really matter. People like them-shameless and slippery-she’d already anticipated their tricks. The internet might have a short memory, but if it came to it… she had no problem making them go viral again.
“You play the violin?” Carter’s voice was calm and even, but there was something in it she couldn’t quite place.
“I do,” Sharon answered plainly.
He stared at her, his gaze steady. “Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
She gave a faint, slightly bitter smile. “Did you ever ask? After I gave birth, I said I wanted to go back to work. But you told me it wasn’t safe to leave our son with strangers, that I should just stay home and raise him. You didn’t even ask what kind of work I used to do.”
Carter went quiet.
She was right. He had never asked because he hadn’t cared to.
And now, the realization hit him-just how little he actually knew about her.
Sharon didn’t waste time. “The rankings and scores are out. Per our agreement, Kelly needs to return my mother’s necklace. Don’t tell me you’re planning to go back on your word?”
Technically, she should be confronting Kelly directly-it had been their bet.
But the man standing in front of her was Kelly’s biggest protector. Without him, Kelly wouldn’t have dared to cause this much
chaos.
The cruelest part? He was her husband.
Carter’s expression darkened. “You really do think the worst of me.”
Sharon met his eyes. “You’re the one who always assumed the worst of me. Every time Kelly so much as frowned, you accused me of bullying her.”
He had no answer for that. Silence stretched between them.
Finally, he said, “I’ll take you to her.”
Sharon didn’t object. Quietly, she sent Wendy a message.
Kelly had Nate, Theo, Madeline-and Carter himself, who might already be planning something.
She couldn’t go in alone. She needed backup.
Wendy saw the message and stood immediately.
“Xavier,” she said briskly, “Sharon’s ready to collect on that bet with Kelly and Nate. Let’s go enjoy the show.”
A sly smile tugged at her lips. “We need to record this moment. Oh, and…” She glanced around, then leaned in toward Xavier and lowered her voice. “Sharon told me there were plenty of people watching when that bet was made. I bet a lot of them are

going to want to see how it ends.”
Xavier caught on right away. A smirk played at the corner of his mouth. “Then let’s invite the whole crowd.”
One thing was clear-Sharon wasn’t backing down.
The Biggs family and Kelly were about to be thoroughly humiliated. And publicly, no less.
Xavier was all for it. He liked people like Sharon-people who never forgot a score, and never left a grudge unsettled.
Elsewhere, in another lounge, the atmosphere was suffocating.
No one spoke. Everyone sat in silence-except for Denise, who was muttering to herself like she was starting to come undone.
The rest all wore the same stiff, cold expressions. Humiliated.
The more they had looked down on Sharon before, the harder this slap landed.
Trying to cut through the tension, Nate finally broke the silence.
“Kelly… don’t let it get to you. Sharon just got lucky. She had that famous violin, Shaluna-that’s the only reason she won. Total fluke. And besides, you only lost by 0.1 points.”
2/2
Chapter 181
Nate turned to Theo, clearly trying to shift the blame.
“Theo, the reason we lost this time is because you’re still too inexperienced. Did you see how well Matty performed? That o.1- point difference Kelly lost because of you.” T
But Theo’s mind was still stuck on the image of Sharon performing onstage.
He’d never seen his mom like that before. She looked like someone else-radiant, almost unreachable. And yet, he couldn’t look away
Was that really his mom? When had she become so incredible? She was even better than Kelly.
He was just a kid. He didn’t know much about music. But even he could tell-his mom’s violin sounded better. Way better.
And that Matty…
He didn’t want to admit it, but Matty’s playing was leagues ahead of his.
Their duet had been nearly flawless.
He couldn’t argue with that.
Looking down, Theo muttered, “I’m sorry. I held Kelly back.”
Nate nodded. “Exactly. If it weren’t for you, Kelly would’ve gotten a perfect score. So really, this isn’t even her loss.”
Madeline whipped her head toward him, livid. “What kind of nonsense is that? You might be able to feed that line to a five-year- old, but do you think the rest of us are deat and brainless?”
Nate visibly recoiled under her glare.
Only then did it hit him-criticizing Theo in front of Madeline had been a very bad idea.
He cleared his throat and said, “Madeline, that’s not what I meant. I just don’t want Sharon getting too full of herself. We all know how talented Theo is. But… you also know Kelly made that bet with Sharon…”
Madeline cut him off coldly. “Kelly lost the bet. What does that have to do with Theo?”
Nate pressed on, “We were the ones who asked Kelly to perform with Theo. They didn’t win-Sharon did. Don’t you think she’s gloating right now? If we admit Kelly lost, that means Theo lost too. Do you really want to see Sharon walk in here acting all superior? And besides, Theo’s her biological son. What’s there to brag about-beating your own kid? Even she wouldn’t be shameless enough to act like that’s some kind of win.”
Madeline’s brow twitched slightly. She hated the idea of Sharon acting like she was on top.
Just then, there was a soft knock at the door.
Carter stepped in, Sharon right behind him.
The moment she entered, the room went still.
All eyes turned to her-stares sharp, defensive. Like she didn’t belong.
Anyone with a weaker heart might’ve shrunk under the weight of it. But Sharon didn’t flinch. She ignored the looks and locked eyes with Kelly.
“Kelly,” she said evenly, “can I have my mother’s necklace back now?”
Almost instinctively, Kelly reached for the necklace at her throat. Her long hair veiled the storm brewing in her eyes.
1/2
The moment she realized she’d lost, she’d wanted to rip it off and fling it away. If she couldn’t have it, she didn’t want Sharon to
have it either.
But the impulse passed quickly.
That would’ve made it too obvious. If she actually did that, Carter might think she’d done it on purpose.
Before Kelly could say a word, Nate jumped in.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Sharon. Kelly didn’t lose to you. The one who lost was Theo.”
2/2
Chapter 182
Sharon’s eyes narrowed slightly. “The one who lost… was Theo?”
“That’s right,” Nate said confidently. “You only beat them by 0.1 points. That difference? It came down to Theo versus Matty. So technically, Kelly didn’t really lose.”
In that moment, everything clicked for Sharon.
“So, you’re planning to back out of the bet?”
Her voice was calm, steady-like she’d seen this kind of thing too many times to be surprised anymore.
Watching her, Carter felt a strange pang in his chest. And for the first time, he truly saw it-just how shameless Nate could be. 1
Nate scoffed, trying to justify himself. “Back out? What are you even saying? Kelly didn’t really lose. Didn’t the judges say it themselves? That 0.1-point difference was because of Theo.”
Trying to bury his own guilt, he raised his voice. “Seriously, what’s there to brag about in beating a five-year-old? And not just any five-year-old-your own son! If you’re really proud of that, sure, go ahead-tell the world you beat your kid. No one’s stopping you.”
Sharon scanned the room. “Is that how all of you feel?”
Denise looked away, clearly uncomfortable.
Madeline turned her face to the side, cold and silent.
Theo looked down, guilt written all over his face. “It was me. I lost,” he mumbled. 1
Kelly kept her head lowered and said nothing. She didn’t challenge a single word Nate had said.
As for Carter… Sharon didn’t even glance at him. He didn’t count as a person.
Nate’s face was smug. “See? Everyone agrees.”
Sharon let out a soft chuckle. “Nate, it seems to me this isn’t about standing up for Kelly. You just don’t want to keep your end of
the deal.”
Nate’s expression shifted.
Everyone except Kelly turned to look at him, shocked. Clearly, no one else had known about the bet.
Panicked, Nate snapped, “What are you talking about?!”
Just as he was about to deny it, Sharon casually took out her phone and played a recording.
Nate’s face twisted in frustration as he tried to wriggle out of it.
“You didn’t even beat Kelly. The bet doesn’t count!”
Just then, the lounge door swung open again. Wendy stepped inside, leading a group of people in with her.
“How utterly disgraceful,” she said, glaring at Nate with open contempt. “Everyone saw you make that bet. And now you’re pretending it didn’t happen?”
Xavier chimed in, his voice cool and razor-sharp. “A man’s word is supposed to mean something. Once it’s said, it shouldn’t be taken back. And now you’re blaming a child? Doesn’t that embarrass you?”
He glanced at Theo, whose face was full of regret-but who had never once tried to make excuses for himself.

Xavier shook his head. “You’re an adult, yet you carry yourself with less integrity than a five-year-old. That’s pathetic.”
The crowd now gathering at the door watched with clear disdain.
Sharon came from humble beginnings. That was something people could criticize.
But going back on your word? That was a different matter entirely.
Who would trust someone-or a company-that couldn’t keep a promise?
One moment you’re agreeing, the next you’re backing out. That kind of person was dangerous to deal with.
Sharon shifted her gaze to the judges standing behind Wendy, then looked at Kelly.
“Kelly, if you feel the result wasn’t fair, or that Theo held you back, we can do it again.”
She paused, her expression softening into a slight smile.
“I’ve got nothing planned today. If you want to compete again-and again-I’ll be right here.” 1
Kelly immediately picked up on the meaning behind her tone.
What Sharon was really saying was simple: No matter how many times you try, you still won’t beat me.
2/2
Chapter 183
Kelly clenched her fists without realizing it. Her nails splintered, digging into her palms, but she didn’t feel a thing.
The more skilled you were, the better you understood your opponent’s strength. And Kelly knew-no matter how many times they competed-she could never beat Sharon.
Her jaw tightened, her teeth grinding hard enough to crack. The look she gave Sharon could no longer hide her emotions. For the first time, raw hatred and bitter frustration burned in her eyes.
How could she lose to Sharon?
Why? Why her?
“Kelly,” Carter’s voice cut through the silence. “You made a bet. Now honor it.”
No one had expected Sharon to actually win. Not even Carter.
Even if he didn’t understand music-and even if he was hopelessly biased toward Kelly-he couldn’t lie to himself anymore.
Anyone with a decent sense of aesthetics could hear it. Sharon’s performance was more beautiful. More moving.
Kelly trembled, seething with helpless rage.
Since she’d returned to the country, she’d trampled Sharon like she was beneath her. Sure, she’d had her fair share of humiliating moments, but Carter had always stepped in to clean up her messes.
But today… even Carter wasn’t on her side.
Sharon, watching her remain frozen in place, spoke calmly, almost casually. “Is it too difficult to take the necklace off yourself, Kelly? Should I help you with it?”
Kelly’s eyes were rimmed with red as she swallowed her pride and unhooked the necklace with trembling fingers.
“This time… I’ll admit your skills were better.”
With all these people watching, backing out now would cost her not just dignity, but reputation. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to regain composure.
“Here.”
She’d never intended to return the necklace. Wearing it out every day had just been her way of mocking Sharon.
So what if she gave it back?
But Shaluna…
A glint of cold determination flickered in her eyes.
That she would take. No matter what.
Sharon looked down at the necklace in her palm. A shimmer of emotion passed through her eyes.
From across the room, Carter’s pupils contracted slightly as he watched her.
Did this necklace really mean that much to her? 1
His lips parted, as if to say something, but Wendy’s voice cut in first.
“Just proves the old saying, doesn’t it? You can’t count on anyone but yourself. Good thing Sharon’s strong enough to fight for
what’s hers. Otherwise, everything she owned would’ve ended up gifted away like some grand gesture.”
1/2
Sharon took a slow, sieauying vi
Nate.
“So… what about you, Nate?”
His expression twisted like he’d just swallowed a handful of dirt.
“Sharon, I… I was just messing around. You’re not seriously going to make me get down on all fours and bark like a dog, are you?”
She looked straight at him, her eyes unwavering.
This Nate, always clowning around in front of her like an oversized brat-she’d tolerated him long enough.
She’d just never had the chance to teach him a lesson. Now, he’d handed her the perfect opportunity.
Sharon’s lips curved slightly, her smile soft but unmistakably dangerous.
“Nate, a man should keep his word. Look at Kelly-she honored the bet, and she’s a woman. Don’t tell me… you’re less honorable than she is?”
Bringing Kelly into it shut Nate up immediately.
Sharon swept her gaze across the crowd and raised her voice just enough to make sure everyone
heard.
“Nate, a lot of the people here do business with your family. You really want to embarrass your entire company over something like this?”
Nate’s eyes darkened with anger. He clenched his jaw. “Sharon… are you threatening me?”
2/2
Chapter 184
Sharon didn’t so much as flinch under Nate’s glare.
“So, Nate,” she said calmly, “have you made up your mind?”
In the crowd, quite a few people had business ties with Nate’s family-and just as many came from rival families.
Nate had never been known for watching his mouth. He’d offended more people than he could remember. If he backed out of his bet now, the whole thing would get blown out of proportion. It could even damage his family’s company.
Still, resentment simmered beneath his skin. He turned toward Carter, silently begging for backup. If anyone could stop Sharon, it was him. She always listened to Carter.
But Carter didn’t look his way. His expression was unreadable, his eyes locked on Sharon.
Nate’s jaw twitched, humiliation tightening every muscle in his body. Then, under the weight of silence and watching eyes, he dropped to his knees.
“Woof… woof, woof!”
The crowd broke into laughter. They couldn’t help themselves.
Nate burned with shame. No one had slapped him, yet his face throbbed like it had been struck. He didn’t have to look up to feel all the smug, mocking stares pointed at him.
Wendy, ever prepared, recorded the entire thing.
Let him try bullying Sharon again after this.
Kelly turned away in disgust. The whole thing was humiliating.
Carter remained expressionless, as if none of it concerned him. But Madeline wasn’t nearly as restrained. She scoffed, her voice laced with disdain.
“So pathetic,” she muttered. “One lucky win and she’s suddenly so arrogant. She didn’t even finish high school. Barely made it past middle school. So what if she can play the violin? All real musicians graduate from proper universities. A middle schooler- honestly. She probably can’t even speak another language right.”
Despite Sharon’s win, not a single member of the Biggs family was smiling. They looked more like they were attending a funeral.
And for all her harshness, Madeline wasn’t entirely wrong. No matter how talented Sharon was, her lack of formal education would always be a stain. If she ever made it big, that flaw would be dragged back out and used against her again and again.
But Sharon didn’t waver. She turned to Madeline and said, “Whatever my education may be, winning is still winning. If you have that much time to put others down, Madeline, maybe spend it teaching your son how to lead by example.”
Her gaze shifted slightly and landed on Theo, who was lingering nearby, visibly uncomfortable.
“If your idea of parenting is raising someone who can’t handle other people’s success and reacts with jealousy… then all I can say is, the Biggs family might not have much of a future.”
She’d accomplished what she came here to do. There was no reason to stay. 1
Turning to Wendy, Sharon said, “We’re done here. Let’s go.”
But just as she turned to leave, Lucy-one of the judges from earlier who had asked Kelly for an autograph-hurried over to her, quickly introducing herself.
1/2
“Sharon, my name is Lucy Cornwell, I-”
Sharon smiled and gently cut her off. “I know who you are.”
Lucy figured she must’ve been spotted earlier when she was fangirling over Kelly. But if she felt embarrassed, it didn’t show. In fact, her expression now was more enthusiastic than ever, eyes shining with admiration, her tone practically reverent.
“Sharon,” she said eagerly, “would you consider joining the Amstern Music Association?”
Then, as if remembering something, Lucy quickly added, “And don’t worry about your education. With your talent, getting a diploma’s just a formality. A high-level certificate? That’s easy.”
Chapter 185
“Even the top music schools abroad–if you’re interested-you could spend a year or so there and walk out with a diploma. It wouldn’t be difficult at all,” Lucy said.
“Our music association is very flexible. We won’t interfere with any of your commercial projects, endorsements, or personal matters. All we ask is that, when you have time, you drop by occasionally to teach a class or two. That would be more than enough.”
Her words landed like a clean, ringing slap across Madeline’s face. She had just ridiculed Sharon’s education-and now Lucy was practically fawning over her.
Madeline’s face turned red, then pale. She couldn’t hold back and snapped, “Is this what music associations have come to? No standards at all? You’ll grovel for anyone now-even a middle school graduate like her?”
Lucy had already heard the rumors swirling around. Right now, she was focused on talent-and couldn’t care less about Madeline’s bitterness.
“Reputation? What’s that worth next to someone like Sharon?” Lucy responded with a cool smile. “If getting her to join meant dropping to my knees, I’d do it in a heartbeat. As for you…”
She turned to Madeline, her voice still pleasant, but now with a sharp edge.
“If I’m not mistaken, aren’t you Sharon’s mother-in-law? She’s making you proud-so why do you look like someone just stepped on your foot? Oh, I see.”
Lucy’s expression shifted as if she’d just had an epiphany, but her words sliced clean and deep.
“Sharon didn’t compete under your family’s name. You’re just upset because you backed the wrong person.”
On her way here, Lucy had already pieced most of it together.
Lifting someone up while stepping on another-just human nature. But being unable to stomach someone else’s success? That was something else entirely.
Talent was talent. Skill was skill. Was it really so hard to admit that someone else might be better?
Madeline was so furious, she couldn’t get a single word out.
Sharon gave her a brief look before turning back to Lucy. “Thank you for the invitation, Lucy. I’ll think about it.”
Lucy’s face lit up. “You’re welcome anytime, Sharon. Just call ahead before you come by.”
She quickly handed her a business card.
Sharon accepted it, then turned to Wendy. “It’s getting late. Let’s head out.”
Wendy grinned. “Xavier, Matty and Sharon just took first place. You owe us a big dinner to celebrate!”
Xavier’s eyes softened with warmth. “Of course. Order anything you want.”
The group walked off, chatting and laughing together.
Nate stood frozen in place, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at Sharon’s retreating figure.
He would remember this moment forever. And one day, he swore to make her pay for it all, with interest.
What neither Nate nor Sharon realized was that Nate’s livestream had already set off a wildfire online.
1/2
Cutting the stream partway through hadn’t cooled things down-if anything, Sharon’s quiet, mysterious presence only poured fuel on the flames.
Within hours, the video of Sharon playing the violin had gone viral.
People everywhere were asking the same question: Who is this stunning, insanely talented young woman?
The internet buzzed for days-but Sharon herself never appeared again.
And the more she stayed out of sight, the louder the noise grew. Her name was everywhere-forums, social media, news feeds.
Even Kelly took notice.
That same day, she got a call from one of the most respected violin masters in the field.
“Kelly, there’s a new violinist online-she’s even more incredible than you. Gorgeous, talented-and the speed at which she’s gaining fans? I’ve never seen anything like it. She’s even gone viral overseas.”
2/2
Chapter 186
“I’ve got tons of friends in the industry blowing up my phone,” the violin master said. “Everyone wants to know who this gorgeous violinist is… I’ve been getting calls nonstop the past few days. Kelly, do you have any inside info? Anything, you can share with me?”
More incredible than her?
Kelly’s eyelids twitched. For some reason, Sharon’s face flashed through her mind.
After all, within the entire music scene in Zachemaine, the number of people more skilled than her were far and few between.
Without thinking, she asked, “What’s her name?”
“No idea. That’s why I’m asking you, Kelly.”
Kelly went quiet for a few seconds before replying, “Send me the video. I’ll take a look.”
Moments later, a new message arrived on her phone.
She opened the video.
Sure enough, it was Sharon. It was a footage from the talent showcase, of Sharon playing the violin.
The scene of her own defeat had been looping in her mind for days now, clinging to her like static.
And the way Carter had looked at Sharon’s back-that strange, focused gaze.
A sense of unease crept up inside her. A kind of threat she’d never felt before.
Sharon, whom she had always dismissed as useless was not only talented, but possibly… more talented than her.
That level of skill, even in Bell University, would make her one of the top students.
But Kelly was sure-she had never seen Sharon at Bell University.
As for the Hall of Fame….
Kelly remained convinced: no matter how capable Sharon was, there was no way she could’ve made it into that circle.
To her, the Bell University Hall of Fame was an untouchable pedestal-something to be looked up to, never reached. She had never once connected Sharon with those hall of famers.
Besides, there were only so many people listed there. She’d never once heard Sharon’s name.
What she had forgotten was that everyone in Bell University went by their stage names-including herself. So how could she have recognized Sharon, even if she had heard of her?
Suddenly, something clicked in her memory.
Nate. That plan he’d mentioned about livestreaming Sharon’s humiliation.
Her expression stiffened. She picked up her phone and dialed him right away.
When Nate heard the news, he rushed to check the trending topics.
One glance-and he nearly exploded.
“What the hell! I only streamed for like five or six minutes! I shut the livestream down as soon as the praises came pouring in. How is she still trending?!”
1/2
Sharon’s rise was almost terrifying in speed.
Back when they were promoting Kelly, even with all the resources he and Carter had poured in, it had taken time before she broke the million-follower mark.
But Sharon? She was blowing up in just a few days.
Nate, who couldn’t stand seeing Sharon gain even an inch, was on the verge of losing it.
“I’ll take care of it. I’ll erase every keyword related to her,” he said quickly. “Don’t worry-as long as I’m around, I’ll make sure
she never outshines you.”
Kelly frowned. “But didn’t she make headlines not long ago? I’m worried…”
Nate tried to reassure her. “The internet has no memory. Everything about her from back then was already wiped clean. Carter and I made sure of it. There’s not a trace left. Once this wave of popularity dies down, people won’t even remember her. And if anyone does recognize her, we’ll just say she’s not the same person. Just someone who looks alike. There are over a billion people in this country. Isn’t it normal for some to look similar?” 1
Nate’s family held half the entertainment industry in its grip.
Back when Kelly and Carter were rising, a good chunk of their headlines had been orchestrated by Nate himself-crafted and polished to make their relationship look like a fairytale, deliberately leading the public on.
As for the smear campaigns against Sharon? Those were his doing, too.
Until Sharon-somehow-slipped through Nate’s family’s media net and released that video of Kelly intentionally hitting her
in a “car accident”.
That one, he never saw coming.
2/2
Chapter 187
It was because of that slip-up that Kelly got dragged through the mud so badly.
After hearing Nate’s reassurance, she finally let herself relax.
What neither of them expected, though, was that even after the trending topics and search entries about Sharon were taken down, the conversations online didn’t stop.
If anything, they only grew louder.
These days, the more mysterious something seemed, the more people wanted to know. The harder you tried to hide it, the more determined they became to dig it up.
And modern netizens? They were all little Sherlock Holmes.
The moment Nate suppressed the trending topics, users immediately sensed something was off. Their curiosity toward Sharon only deepened.
A few sharp-eyed netizens, working with the scraps and rumors provided by the online crowd, began to investigate.
By the time Nate and Kelly realized what was happening, it was already far too late.
At the kindergarten, Matty was having the time of his life lately.
No matter where he went, he was greeted with wide eyes and admiring gazes from the other children. He had, without question, become the celebrity of the school.
“Matty, Matty, was that your mom performing with you? She’s so pretty, like a real-life fairy!”
Matty glanced at Theo, who was standing not far away, jealousy practically steaming off his little face.
With a smug smile, Matty answered, “She’s not my mom yet.”
A clever kid caught the phrasing and tilted his head. “Not yet… so that means she will be soon?”
Matty nodded hard. “Sharon is getting divorced. Once she’s divorced, she’ll come be my mom.”
Many of the kids at the kindergarten came from divorced families. They already understood what that meant.
The moment Matty said it, a few of the kids’ eyes lit up.
“Really? I want a mom like that too!”
“Matty, Matty, my dad’s single now. Can you introduce Sharon to him?”
“Yeah right-your dad’s ugly. She wouldn’t like him! Matty, my dad’s handsome. She’ll definitely fall for him. And maybe she can give me a pretty baby sister too!”
“Matty, didn’t you say you liked that car model I got last time? I’ll give it to you. Just let me borrow Sharon for a few days, okay?”
They swarmed around him, all trying to win over Matty so he’d help their dads get a new wife.
Some of the kids whose parents hadn’t divorced yet-but fought all the time-looked on with pure envy.
“If Dad and Mom get divorced… does that mean we can get a new mom too?”
The group of them exchanged glances, then one whispered, “Should we tell our parents to get divorced tonight?”

“Yeah. Once they’re divorced, I don’t want either of them. I want Sharon. She’s amazing. She can cook, she’s beautiful, and she plays the violin…”
Matty often posted pictures on the school forun-snacks and meals that Sharon made.
Everyone knew that Matty had a beautiful, talented caregiver.
Now that she could also play the violin? Even the kids with two parents at home but no warmth… were beside themselves with jealousy.
A little girl hugged her doll to her chest, eyes shining as she whispered, “I wish I were her child… If I had a mom like that, I’d smile even in my dreams.”
Theo stood frozen.
It was as if lightning had struck him. The mother he had always looked down on… was someone every other kid wished they had.

Chapter 188
Matty noticed Theo’s hollowed, dazed expression-and the smile tugging at the corners of his lips only deepened.
With the pride of someone presenting a prized collection, he began telling the other kids all about Sharon.
“Sharon doesn’t just cook delicious food. She even knows how to make medicinal meals. Do you guys know what that is? My stomach’s always been weak, and my hands and feet are cold all the time. I’m super afraid of the cold. So Sharon makes me medicinal food every day to help me get better.
“She’s amazing, like she can do anything. She knows exactly what kinds of food are bad for the body and which ones help you get stronger.”
As he spoke, Matty lifted the insulated thermos in his hand. His delicate little face lit up with a happy glow.
“This is the one she made for me today. She said I’m still recovering, so I shouldn’t eat too much outside food. The food at kindergarten is tasty, sure, but a lot of the ingredients aren’t good for me right now. So she made me lunch herself and packed it just for me.”
The other kids listened in stunned silence, their eyes following the thermos like it was a treasure chest.
“Whoa! Sharon is amazing. She can even do that? Is she, like, a superhero or something?”
“I don’t like the food here either. I asked my mom to make me lunch, but she said I was being annoying…”
A kid wrinkled his nose. “I’ve had medicinal food before. It’s disgusting. I almost throw up every time.”
Matty’s smugness only grew. “That’s the old-fashioned kind. Sharon improved her recipes-it actually tastes really good.”
Then, without hesitation, he popped the lid off the thermos.
A gentle herbal aroma drifted into the air, subtle yet warm.
“Mmm, it smells so good!”
Several kids sniffed instinctively, and a few who hadn’t eaten much for breakfast had their stomachs rumble on cue.
One by one, all eyes turned to Matty’s thermos.
The colors, the fragrance-it was enough to make anyone’s mouth water. It looked good, smelled better, and probably tasted even better than that.
Without a hint of stinginess, Matty picked up the little spoon and cup beside him and offered a taste.
“Try it, if you don’t believe me.”
The kids didn’t need to be told twice.
“Oh my gosh, this is so good!”
“Delicious and healthy? I wanna eat this every day too!”
“Matty, please give me one more cup, please, please!”
“Hey! Why’d you steal my cup? That one’s mine! Give it back!”
“Nope! Not giving it back!”
Two of them nearly got into a full-on fight over a second helping.
Theo stood still, staring blankly at the scene, his tiny fists slowly clenching at his sides.
1/2
Once upon a time, his mom had treated him that way. But he found her annoying. In his eyes, all she did was cook-nothing special, nothing worth being proud of.
He’d even been ashamed of her, too embarrassed to tell anyone that Sharon was his mother.
So why… why were all these kids jealous of Matty?
While Theo stood frozen in thought, Matty had casually wandered over to his side.
“I got first place this time,” he said quietly. “That lady you and your dad like, Kelly? She’s not that impressive after all.”
Theo snapped out of it and shot him a glare, full of disgust.
But Matty went on, unfazed. “Sharon is prettier than her, smarter than her. She protects me from everything she even fights off the bad guys.”
“Not like Kelly. All she ever does is whimper and cry, always needing your dad or you to help her out. Can’t even handle things better than a five-year-old. Honestly, it’s embarrassing. And you guys still like someone like that? You must be blind.”
Every time Matty opened his mouth, Theo felt his blood boil.
He jabbed a finger at him and shouted, “Kelly’s not as bad as you say! I won’t let you talk about her like that!”

Chapter 189
Matty tilted his head. “Then tell me, what exactly is so great about Kelly?”
Theo’s face twisted with frustration. “She buys me lots of tasty snacks!”
Matty nodded lightly. “Mm, and gave you an allergic reaction.”
Theo fired back, “She cooks for me herself!”
“Oh, right,” Matty replied calmly. “That seafood porridge? Almost gave you another allergy attack.”
“She plays the violin,” Theo said, louder now, as if that would help.
Matty didn’t miss a beat. “Still lost to Sharon.”
Theo opened his mouth, struggling. “Kelly also… also…”
“She also cries,” Matty said flatly. “Frames people. Takes what doesn’t belong to her… Kelly is so amazing, huh? But really, I should thank you. If your taste wasn’t so terrible, how else would my dad and I have the chance to take Sharon away?
“Oh, and guess what-I forgot to tell you. This weekend, I’m going to the amusement park with Sharon and Dad. Want to come?
Too bad. You’re not invited.”
Matty watched Theo, eyes gleaming as he delivered the final blow. “Snatching someone else’s mom… feels great.”
Theo’s eyes turned bloodshot. The next second, he lunged forward, fists clenched, ready to swing.
But Matty didn’t even flinch. He only smiled, pleased with himself. “Go ahead and hit me. I’ll tell Sharon and make you apologize all over again.”
Theo, for all his anger, wasn’t stupid. Even pushed this far, he kept a sliver of control.
He gave a cold laugh. “A punch in exchange for one sorry? Worth it.”
“Then come on.” Matty met his stare without blinking. “But if you hit me, Sharon will feel sorry for me. And she’ll be even more disappointed in you. You have no idea how sweet she is to me afterward. Like I’m her real son or something.”
Theo froze. The hand he’d raised mid-air just… stopped there.
That was how Matty won people over-by playing the pitiful card, by acting vulnerable. Now the kindergarten teachers and kids
were all on his side.
Some little girls who liked Matty had even warned Theo not to bully him again.
But before Matty showed up, Theo had been the favorite-teachers adored him, the other kids followed him around. Everyone
used to like him.
Matty turned to leave, satisfied, but Theo’s icy voice stopped him.
“You’re such a fake. You say you like the food my mom makes, but you didn’t even finish it. You just gave it away to the other kids.”
Matty paused mid-step and glanced back.
“You mean that?” he said, pointing at the nearby thermos. “That one’s not the real deal.”
He smiled. “The real medicinal food-that’s the one Sharon made just for me.”
“I asked her to make a second batch for the other kids to try. But…” Matty’s grin widened, “you don’t get any. Mad?”

And with that, he turned and ran toward the other kids still huddled around the thermos, fighting over the last drops.
The weekend came quickly.
Theo stood outside the amusement park, hiding near the entrance, scanning the crowd.
He didn’t want to believe it. That his mom would actually take that awful kid Matty to the amusement park.
She’d never taken him.
He thought back.
He used to want to go with both Mom and Dad, but Dad was always busy-always made plans, then left at the last second with
some excuse.
Mom had wanted to take him alone, but without Dad, it just didn’t feel the same. He ended up deciding not to go.
And then came Kelly.
On Mom’s birthday, Kelly invited him and Dad to the amusement park.
They went. They left Mom behind at home and went off to have fun.
Now, standing there alone, a strange feeling rose in his chest-heavy and hollow. Like maybe this was what it felt like to be left
behind.
And then, from a distance, he saw them-three figures walking slowly toward the park gates.

Chapter 190
It was that awful Matty again-him and his dad.
And… his mom.
Sharon was holding Matty’s hand, leaning close, talking to him with a soft, warm smile on her face.
It was so different from the cold, distant look she always gave him.
Theo felt something stir, faint and blurry, like an old photograph half-lost in memory. She used to smile at him like that too, didn’t she?
When had that stopped? When had her eyes turned so cold?
He followed the three of them from a distance, watching as they rode the Ferris wheel, the carousel, the pirate ship.
They even played the balloon shooting game.
Matty won a stuffed animal, then grinned like an idiot as he handed it to Sharon.
She took it with a laugh, gave him a thumbs up, clearly impressed.
Theo scoffed.
He was way better at shooting than Matty.
And yet, seeing that smile on his mother’s face-it felt like something sharp lodged in his chest.
He muttered under his breath, “Grandma was right. Mom really hasn’t seen much of the world. It’s just a stupid toy. I could win one in seconds… What’s there to be so happy about? Matty can only win some cheap stuffed animal. I could’ve won that crystal music box instead. If I gave that to Mom, she’d be over the moon…”
His voice faltered.
He suddenly remembered-he’d already given that music box to Kelly.
She’d just smiled and said thanks, polite and indifferent. Not like his mom. Not like this.
So Mom was that easy to please?
But he hadn’t just given away the music box. He’d given his mom’s birthday gift to Kelly too.
A strange feeling crept up from deep inside-a quiet, shapeless regret.
He wished-really wished-he could make his mom smile like that at him again.
Theo kept following them.
He noticed, keenly, that every time they needed water, food, or help carrying things, it was Matty’s dad who stepped up.
His mom and that stupid kid just sat on the bench, chatting and laughing, waiting.
But whenever his mom went out with him, Dad, and Kelly, his mom was the one doing everything-carrying, buying, running around.
Every time they went out, his mom ended up sweating through her shirt, and never once did she smile.
And during the happiest moments, his mom would always remind him-don’t eat this, don’t touch that. One thing after another, all forbidden. It ruined everything.

Chapter 190
But with Matty… when Mom reminded him, he didn’t get annoyed. Instead, he smiled and said, “Got it, Sharon. I’ll be more careful next time.”
When she told him not to eat junk food, Matty looked a little disappointed but still nodded. “Alright. I’ll wait until I’m healthy again… Sharon, can I have your pineapple cakes tonight?”
She laughed, gently ruffling his hair. “Sure. I’ll make them as soon as we get home.”
“Yay! Sharon, you’re the best!”
In that moment, Matty’s face glowed with the simple joy only children had-pure, open, nothing like the sneaky, two-faced version Theo knew.
What was so great about her pastries? He’d had them so often he was sick of them.
So why did he suddenly want one now?
Why did his chest feel so tight?
Not long after, Xavier came walking toward them, holding three crispy ice cream cones.
Chapter 191
“Matty, Sharon, here–you two take these.”
Sharon smiled and thanked him. “Lately I’ve been eating so many desserts, I’m starting to wonder if I’ll gain weight.”
Biting into his cone, Xavier replied, “A woman with a few curves look better anyway. All bones just looks… wrong.”
Matty looked up curiously. “Sharon, did you not used to eat sweets?”
“Mm,” she nodded. “After I had Theo, I almost stopped completely.”
Matty paused for a second, then seemed to understand.
“Is it because Theo is lactose intolerant, so you stopped eating sweets too?”
Sharon gave a small nod.
Xavier, seemingly reminded of something, added, “All these years, you’ve just been holding back like this? You were married to Carter for five years, and I don’t think he ever even knew what you liked to eat.”
Sharon had always liked bold flavors-especially spicy food. Practically addicted to it. But for years, everything she made was mild and clean, because of Carter’s and Theo’s dietary needs.
She said, “If I don’t allow Theo to eat something, I have to set the example myself. Otherwise, how do I have the right to tell him no?”
That was when Matty, sharp for his age, piped up, “Sharon, you can eat whatever you want around me. Don’t worry. If you don’t want me eating something, I swear I won’t even take a bite!”
From the side, Theo’s voice cut through, “Fake.”
He looked over at the three of them, sitting there happily eating their ice cream.
His eyes flicked to a nearby vendor selling the same cones. He gulped, almost unconsciously.
He really wanted one.
But he was lactose intolerant. Stuff like that wasn’t good for his body.
Forget it. Better not.
He forced himself to look away.
But then Kelly had once said that most ice creams these days were just made with additives. There might not even be anything in there that would trigger his intolerance.
A lowes probably wouldn’t hurt, right?

Mom had just told Matty nut to eat certain things, and Matty had actually listened
He had to be more disciplined than Matly

So even with his mouth watering at the sight of the ice cream, Theo held back

“Sir! Bad news! Theo is missing!”
Chaos suddenly broke out in the Biggs household.
All Marie had done was go prepare some fruit, but when she returned, Theo was gone.
She and the other servants searched the house top to bottom, inside and out, but there was no sign of him.
Panicking, Marie picked up the phone and called Carter.
He was in the middle of a meeting when he answered. His face tightened instantly.
“What happened? How could Theo just disappear?”
Marie’s voice trembled, on the verge of tears. “I don’t know… He said he wanted some fruit, so I went to make it. When I came back, he was gone.”
Hearing that, Carter didn’t hesitate. He stood up.
“Meeting’s over,” he said sharply, then turned to Simon. “Find out where Theo went. Now.”
He grabbed his phone again and dialed another number.
“Mom, is Theo at your place?”
It wasn’t unusual for Theo to spend weekends with Madeline.
“No,” she replied. “Yesterday he told me he was going to a friend’s birthday party today, so he didn’t come over.”
Something in her tone shifted. “Why? What’s wrong with Theo?”
Carter’s voice dropped, cold and tight. “He’s disappeared.”

Chapter 192
“How could Theo just disappear?!” Madeline’s voice rose, sharp with tension. “Are you sure he didn’t go to that birthday party he mentioned?”
Carter replied calmly, but with a grim edge. “He left both his phone and tracking watch at home. Clearly, he didn’t want to be found.”
Madeline gasped. “But he loves Kelly the most, doesn’t he? Have you asked her?”
“Not yet,” he said. “I’ll call her now.”
Theo was her precious grandson. Madeline hurriedly added, “Let me know if you hear anything… No, forget it. I’ll go search with Denise too.”
After hanging up, Carter dialed Kelly.
She sounded surprised when she answered. “Theo’s not with me… Is he missing?”
Panic crept into her voice. A real accident would ruin everything. Without Theo, she had no excuse to stay close to Carter. It was so much easier to manipulate a child than an adult.
After a pause, her voice softened. “Carter, do you think… do you think Sharon might’ve taken him?”
Carter’s brow furrowed. “But Marie is sure he left on his own. No one picked him up.”
Kelly’s tone was gentle, coaxing. “But he left his phone and watch behind. That’s not something he’d do if he was coming to see us. He didn’t want anyone to know where he was going. If he was coming to you-or me-why sneak around like that?”
She hesitated, then continued, “Didn’t you say Sharon has been pushing for a divorce lately? And you agreed?”
“Maybe she doesn’t know how to back out now, so she took Theo-so you’d see how much your son still needs his mother. That way, you’d think twice about the divorce, for Theo’s sake.
“And remember, Theo usually stays at Madeline’s on weekends. But yesterday, he lied. That means this was planned. Maybe it was Sharon who reached out to him and made him run away from home.”
Carter went quiet for a few seconds before answering. “I don’t think so.”
He remembered how resolute Sharon had been when she brought up divorce. It hadn’t seemed like a bluff.
He couldn’t explain it exactly, but he had a feeling-Sharon really meant it this time.
Kelly’s heart sank.
Carter, who had never once trusted Sharon, was suddenly defending her?
His attitude… had changed.
It had to be because of her little performance that day. Somehow, Sharon had left an impression.
Kelly knew one thing for certain-Carter had always admired women with talent. If a woman was just a pretty face with no substance, no matter how stunning she looked, she couldn’t hold his interest. Just like Sharon used to be.
That was exactly how Kelly had attracted him in the first place.
No. She couldn’t let him fall for Sharon again.
Meanwhile, at the amusement park, Sharon had no idea Theo had gone missing.
1/2
She was about to take Matty to the next ride when her phone rang.
It was Carter.
She hesitated for a second before answering.
“Carter. Calling about the divorce?”
He’d proposed a clean break, that she was to leave with nothing. She’d told him the next day: absolutely not.
She’d given birth to his heir. She’d spent five years caring for Theo and him like a live-in maid. No pay, no thanks-and now he wanted her to walk away empty-handed? He had to be dreaming.
She wasn’t planning to remarry anytime soon, but Xavier had already helped her find a good lawyer. The appeal was filed, and now they just had to wait for the legal process to unfold.
The lawyer had warned her: if Carter refused to consent to the divorce, it would be hard to win in the first trial.
2/2
Chapter 193
The first time a person filed for divorce, they would have to wait six months before they could file again. Then there was mediation, more paperwork-layers of procedure. To actually finalize it? One would have to look at two years, minimum.
Getting married was easy. Just sign a paper.
But divorce? It was hard. Even if both parties agreed, there was still a mandatory cooling-off period.
On the other end of the line, silence lingered for a few seconds.
“Sharon,” Carter said. “Is Theo with you?”
Sharon frowned. “No, he’s not.”
“You’re sure?” he pressed. “Theo really isn’t with you?”
Her tone began to cool. “Carter, what exactly are you trying to say?”
“Theo’s missing.”
Her voice turned cold. “Then go look for him. Why are you calling me? You think I can just conjure him out of thin air?”
“You don’t sound surprised. Not even a little worried,” he said.
Kelly’s words still echoed in his mind, planting seeds of doubt.
And Sharon… she didn’t sound shocked at all.
But Sharon wasn’t slow. She caught his implication instantly and let out a low, bitter laugh.
“When I was worried sick about him, you and your mother were the ones always saying I was overreacting. That I was anxious, dramatic. Remember?”
There was a pause.
“Sharon,” Carter said quietly, “now isn’t the time to dig up the past.”
“Oh? Then what is it?”
“You’re his mother. If you wanted to take Theo out, all you had to do was tell me. There was no need to sneak around.”
Sharon didn’t bother softening her voice. “Exactly. I’m his mother. If I wanted to take him somewhere, why would I need to sneak around? Maybe ask Kelly-Theo likes her so much, maybe he snuck out to find her.”
“I already did,” Carter said. “She said he’s not with her.”
“Well,” Sharon replied flatly, “now you’ve heard it from me too. He’s not with me.”
She hung up without waiting for a response.
Matty looked up at her and asked in a quiet voice, “Sharon, did something happen to Theo?”
Sharon answered, “His dad called. Said Theo went missing.”
Matty’s eyes widened. “How could he go missing? Should we go help look for him?”
“No need,” Sharon said, her expression calm. “He probably snuck off to see Kelly.”
She added, almost to herself, “Besides, with Carter’s resources, finding a kid is easy. He doesn’t need us.”
1/2
She wasn’t about to humiliate herself again.
Elsewhere, Simon rushed in with an update.
“Sir, we found Sean. He went to the amusement park. Alone.” 1
“The amusement park?”
Carter’s brow tensed. Suddenly, he remembered the faint background music he’d heard during his call with Sharon.
His eyes snapped to Simon, sharp as blades. “Where is Sharon right now?”
Simon was thorough. The moment Carter told him to investigate Theo’s whereabouts, he’d looked into everyone connected to the boy-Sharon, Kelly, Madeline-everyone.
He lowered his eyes. “She’s… also at the amusement park.”
Carter’s lips pressed into a hard, cold line.
He’d chosen to trust Sharon. And she’d lied to him.
His eyes darkened. “Get the car. We’re going to the park. And have someone hold Sharon there-don’t let her take a single step
outside.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll take care of it.”
Simon pulled the car out and headed straight for the amusement park.
They weren’t even halfway there when Carter’s phone rang again.
“Sir! Sean fell into the lake!” (1)

Carter went pale. “Say that again?”
The voice on the line sharpened. “Sean fell in the lake-they’ve rushed him to the hospital!”
Back at the amusement park, Sharon’s good mood had been completely ruined by Carter’s call.
Matty looked up at her and spoke gently, “Sharon, since Theo is missing, maybe we should help look for him. Even if we stayed here, we probably wouldn’t enjoy ourselves.”
Sharon’s eyes flickered faintly, like a candle flame in a draft.
Matty added, “Theo and I go to the same kindergarten. We’re good friends. If something really happened to him… I’d be really
sad too.”
Sharon glanced at him, her expression hard to read.
From what she’d heard, Theo had been bullying Matty at school. She’d already been called in by the teachers twice to mediate between them.
But even so, Matty still called Theo a friend-still wanted to help.
That kind of understanding… was quietly heartbreaking.
Then Xavier spoke up too. “We should go help look for him. No matter what, Theo is still your son. Even if another kid from the kindergarten went missing, and we knew about it, we’d help search.”
He looked like someone who didn’t take much seriously, but there was a softness in his tone that said otherwise.
Maybe it took someone like Xavier to raise a child like Matty-well-mannered, kind, perceptive.
Sharon paused for a moment, then nodded.
They had just started heading toward the park’s exit when Matty suddenly stopped, his eyes fixed in a daze on something in the distance.
Sharon noticed and lowered her head slightly. “What is it, Matty?”
Matty blinked and came back to himself. “N-nothing… Dad, Sharon, I just need to use the restroom.”
Sharon asked, “Want me to go with you?”
“No, it’s okay!” Matty quickly said. “I can go by myself.”
He was always independent like that. Things like this didn’t usually require parental supervision.
Sharon nodded. “Alright. If anything happens, call me.”
Not long after Matty walked off, Sharon’s phone rang again.
She glanced at the screen.
Carter.
Her brows furrowed, and she declined the call without hesitation.
There was a time when just seeing his name on her phone would’ve made her heart race.
1/2
Now, all she felt was irritated.
Barely a second later, the phone lit up again. Same caller. Carter was relentless.
Xavier took one look at the screen and seemed to understand.
“You should answer,” he said. “Theo’s missing-he’s probably panicking.”
Sharon gave a small nod.
But it wasn’t that she cared about Carter’s panic. She just knew that if she didn’t answer, he’d keep calling
After telling Xavier she’d be right back, she stepped aside and found a quiet spot before finally picking up
“If Theo’s missing, go find him. Can you please stop bothering me?”
Carter’s voice was low and sharp. “You’re at the amusement park. Theo is also at the amusement park. And you still insist he’s not with you?”
Sharon let out a bitter laugh. “So what? I’m here, he’s here, and that automatically means we’re together? There are hundreds of people here. Why not say he’s with someone else?”
Carter shot back, “Then tell me why are you there? And why is he there too?”

Chapter 195
“Carter, the person you should be questioning is Theo, not me.” Sharon’s voice was laced with thinly veiled contempt and clear impatience. “If you called just to interrogate me about this, then don’t bother calling again. I won’t pick up anymore.”
Carter’s voice came through, cold enough to cut. “Stay where you are. If you try to take Theo and leave, I’ll have no choice but to have someone detain you.”
Sharon had been planning to look around the amusement park after hearing Theo might be there.
But hearing that haughty, commanding tone in his voice changed her mind entirely.
“Carter,” she said, her voice calm but sharp, “you once told me that if you need something from someone, you’d better learn how to ask nicely.”
Carter sounded almost incredulous. “Ask? You think I’m asking you for something?”
She didn’t wait for a response. “You’re not asking-you’re ordering. And who do you think you are, exactly? Why should I take orders from you? I hope you get one thing straight. I am not your servant. You don’t get to bark orders at me.”
With that, she hung up.
When she returned to the bench by the lake, Xavier was gone.
Matty had gone to use the restroom, which was tucked away behind the trees past the central lake.
Sharon was just about to walk in that direction when a loud splash broke the still air.
Then came shouting.
“Someone fell in!”
“Oh my God, two kids! They look about five or six!”
“Where are their parents?”
“Does anyone know how to swim? Somebody help!”
The voices blurred together, but Sharon’s heart dropped. She ran fast toward the lake.
Pushing through the crowd, she spotted a small figure flailing in the water.
Matty.
Panic surged through her.
Matty couldn’t swim.
Without a second thought, she shoved past the last of the bystanders and jumped in.
She pulled Matty from the water. He was limp and coughing.
“Matty, are you okay?” Sharon was already pressing water from Matty’s chest, her hands shaking.
“Cough-cough!” Matty coughed violently, spitting up a mouthful of water, eyes barely open.
Then he saw her familiar face. That quiet beauty. Her eyes were filled with nothing but worry, laid bare and unfiltered.
Matty’s eyes welled up. He threw his arms around her, sobbing. “Sharon… I thought… I thought I’d never see you again…”

Chapter 105
Sharon held him tightly, whispering words of comfort, smoothing his drenched hair until his breathing steadied.
Only then did she gently ask, “Matty how did you fall in the water?”
Before he could answer, the second child who had fallen in was pulled out.
He was in better shape-conscious, barely coughing, hadn’t swallowed as much water.
But when Sharon got a good look at his face, she froze. “Theo…? What are you doing here?”
Theo was soaked head to toe, water dripping from his hair and face. It was impossible to tell if what ran down his cheeks were raindrops… or tears.
In that moment, Theo looked so small. So pitiful. Like a child lost at sea.
And for a fleeting second, Sharon’s heart softened.
His eyes, red rimmed and glistening, lifted toward her.
“You… you saved him first. You just left me in the lake to die.”
Her brow twitched, lips parting to explain-
But then she saw the look in his eyes.
That burning, wounded glare. Like betrayal.
And she stopped.
Her voice came low and quiet. “Theo… if I remember right… you know how to swim. Don’t you?”
2/2
Chapter 196
Theo had been raised under a strict, elite education from the very beginning.
Swimming-one of the most basic survival skills-was something he had mastered when he was just a few years old. In his kindergarten, swimming was a required course. In certain situations, it could mean the difference between life and death for a child. They even held swimming competitions during final exams.
Matty, on the other hand, hadn’t yet learned how to swim. Last year, he’d accidentally fallen into the ocean, and the trauma had left him with a deep fear of water. Still, he knew it was something he had to overcome. He’d made up his mind to learn before the end of the semester-to face that fear, head-on.
Sharon had encouraged him when she heard.
Theo froze, his breath suddenly uneven.
Right. He had forgotten. He could swim.
Just moments ago, he had followed them-shadowed their steps-only to be caught by Matty.
“Theo,” Matty had said. “You really followed us all the way here? After trailing behind us this whole time… what’s it feel like?”
Theo had already been seething, watching the way Matty and Sharon interacted, so naturally close. It drove him mad.
He didn’t hold back. “I’m her son. No matter how nice she is to you, you’ll never take my place. I can call her Mom. You can only call her Sharon. That’s the difference between us. She’s ignoring me right now because she’s mad. That’s all. You? You’re just a substitute. You want to bet that if I apologize, act cute a little, she’ll come right back to me? And she won’t even look at you again.
Matty’s eyes narrowed.
He always tried to provoke Theo, and sometimes succeeded in getting Sharon to side with him. But deep down, he knew-Theo still held a bigger piece of her heart.
Still, he wasn’t worried.
If he had enough time-if he was good enough to her-eventually, he would become the one she cared about most.
But he was still a kid. He couldn’t hide his emotions like adults could. Knowing something in your head was one thing. Hearing it out loud-those harsh, cruel words-was another.
If Theo really did go running back to Sharon and threw a few sweet words her way…she might just come back to him. And Matty
couldn’t let that happen.
No way. He wouldn’t let her be taken back.
He turned his head and saw the lake nearby. Suddenly, an idea sparked. He remembered how Kelly had once deliberately fallen
down the stairs to frame Sharon.
If he hadn’t recorded that video, Sharon would’ve been blamed. By both Theo and his dad.
An idea clicked into place.
Deliberately, Matty said, “If I’m really so much less than you, then why would Sharon tell me a secret… about you?”
Theo blinked, caught off guard. “A secret? What secret?”
“Not telling.” Matty stepped toward the lake. “I’m going to find Sharon now. Bye.”

Theo’s curiosity snapped into high gear. He had no idea what his mom might’ve told this annoying kid. He followed quickly.
“Matty! Tell me! What did Mom say to you?!”
“Nope. Not telling. Not telling!”
In the middle of their back-and-forth, as they tugged at each other, Matty suddenly let himself fall into the lake.
Just before he hit the water, he gave Theo a sly, victorious smile.
“If I tell Sharon that you pushed me in… she’ll stay by my side to take care of me.”
Theo hadn’t seen it coming. He stood there, stunned.
By the time he snapped out of it, Matty was already thrashing in the water, crying out for help.

Chapter 197
Matty had always been afraid of water, but his dad had taken him to see many therapists. The fear had eased, bit by bit, until now it was almost gone.
He’d even been thinking, maybe in a little while, he could ask Sharon to teach him how to swim.
Theo stood by the shore, staring at him in a daze. The image flashed in his mind-Matty deliberately falling, deliberately hurting himself-and the way his mother had looked at him then, full of worry and pain.
With a scoff, Theo said, “Hmph. Faking weakness? Anyone can do that. You jump, I’ll jump too.”
Let’s see who Mom ends up taking care of.
Then, without another word, he leapt in after Matty.
He forgot, though. He could swim.
Now he just stood there awkwardly in the water, not sure what to do. The fury that had built up inside him fizzled out like a match drowned in a lake.
At that moment, Matty’s weak voice drew Sharon’s attention back.
“Sharon, I feel awful…”
She spoke gently, soothing him, “Hang in there, Matty. The ambulance is almost here.”
Matty clutched tightly at her sleeve, his grip desperate. “Don’t go, okay? I’m scared…”
Sharon wrapped her arms around him. “I won’t. I’ll stay right here with you.”
Matty’s face finally relaxed. And then-he fainted.
Sharon’s expression shifted instantly, panic flaring in her eyes.
Theo glared at Matty, unconscious in Sharon’s arms.
That guy was such a faker. Always playing the victim, always trying to win people’s sympathy.
It drove Theo mad. But the worst part? He couldn’t do a thing about it.
He watched Matty pretending and decided he wouldn’t lose.
Fine. If faking it was the game, he’d play too.
If Matty could pass out, so could he.
He collapsed.
Sharon was startled again. Theo might know how to swim, but he was still a child. What if he’d hit something when he went under?
With Matty in her arms and Theo suddenly limp in the water, she was pulled in two directions, flustered and overwhelmed.
Luckily, Xavier returned just then and took Matty from her arms.
Only then could Sharon rush over to check on Theo. She found he was mostly fine-just fainted, it seemed-and finally let herself breathe again.
Not long after, the ambulance arrived.

At the hospital, by the time Sharon stepped off the ambulance, Carter was already there, waiting.
He hadn’t come alone. Madeline and Denise stood beside him.
The moment Madeline saw her, her eyes reddened, her voice sharp with anger. “Sharon, how dare you try to steal my grandson away?! Do you want me to call the police on you?!”
Sharon barely lifted her eyelids. “Go ahead.”
“You think I won’t?!” Madeline’s hands trembled as she pulled out her phone, ready to dial. “Let’s see if a few days in jail make you come to your senses!”
Denise rushed to hold her mother back. “Mom, what are you doing? Maybe… maybe Sharon just missed Theo too much, that’s why she took him with her?”
Madeline’s face twisted with rage. “If I don’t teach her a lesson, who knows what she’ll do to my grandson next time?”
Sharon didn’t even look at her. She stepped down from the ambulance and followed the doctors, helping to get Theo and Matty checked in.
After running through all the procedures, confirming both boys were okay and stable, she finally allowed herself to exhale.
That’s when the police appeared before her.
“Sharon McKinzie,” one officer said, “we’ve received a report that you’re suspected of abducting a child. We’ll need you to come with us and assist in the investigation.”
Chapter 198
Sharon hadn’t expected Madeline to actually call the police.
She turned her head and saw Madeline standing off to the side, eyes gleaming with self-satisfaction.
Sharon looked to Denise. “You didn’t even try to stop her?”
Denise hesitated, her voice small. “I… I couldn’t stop her even if I tried.”
Ever since she’d watched Sharon take down Kelly, Denise had begun to feel… conflicted. It turned out her sister-in-law wasn’t
so useless after all.
She was, in fact, kind of impressive.
Back then, Denise had believed that Kelly and her brother were a better match-Kelly might have been a little manipulative, sure, but she had real skills. Genuine talent. Otherwise, how could she have been her brother’s first love, the one he could never forget?
Like her brother, Denise had always admired women with an artistic aura. She’d tried learning music, calligraphy, painting- but she simply didn’t have the gift.
Madeline let out a cold laugh.
“What now? Scared?” she sneered. “It’s too late. Spend some time in jail and reflect on your actions! I don’t care how well you play the violin. What good is that if no one wants a woman with a criminal record?”
Sharon was quiet for a moment. Then she looked at Carter.
“She’s old-maybe her brain’s going. But what’s wrong with your heads? You really let her pull a stunt like this?”
Carter had been with Theo during all the hospital checks. He’d thought Madeline was just venting. He hadn’t realized she’d
actually gone through with the report.
His brows knit. “Mom… how could you call the police?”
Before he could finish, Madeline cut him off sharply. “Carter, stay out of this. If she doesn’t learn there are consequences for her actions, who knows what kind of damage she’ll do to my grandson next time?”
Sharon let out a cold breath. “Truly dumb, and doesn’t even know it.” 1
Then she turned to the officers.
“Sorry,” she said calmly. “This child ran away from home. I didn’t abduct him. And-”
She paused, then spoke each word with measured clarity. “He’s my son. Since when does a mother abduct her own child?”
The officer blinked. “Wait-what? You’re the boy’s mother?”
Sharon nodded once.
“His biological mother?” the officer asked.
“Yes.”
The officer frowned, looking skeptical. “Please show me your ID.”
“Of course,” Sharon handed it over without hesitation.
The officer scanned it, and her full background appeared-along with her familial ties. Theo’s profile came up as well.

His expression shifted as he glanced at Madeline.
How could this old lady accuse her daughter-in-law of kidnapping her grandson? What kind of family was this?
He turned to Madeline. “Ma’am, I think there’s been some misunderstanding. This woman is the child’s blog a mother, and they are still legally married. There’s nothing illegal about a mother taking her son somewhere. This isn’t a kidnapping”
Madeline froze, the breath catching in her throat.
She snapped back quickly, voice rising. “They’re in the middle of a divorce! She left with the child without saying word. obviously she had bad intentions!”
“And look!” she added, her voice pitching even higher. “She kidnapped the boy and he ended up in the hospital! He fell into the water. Clearly this vicious woman pushed him in!”
The officer stared at her, clearly exasperated. “Ma’am, everything you’re saying is speculation. And speculation isn’t evidence f you have any proof that this woman has harmed her child, you’re welcome to present it to us. If it’s real, we’ll take appropriate action immediately.”

Chapter 199
Madeline opened her mouth to say something more, but Carter stopped her.
“Mom, Theo’s alone in the hospital room. You and Denise should go check on him.”
Madeline was still fuming, but with Carter stepping in-and her own fault undeniable-she could only shoot Sharon a furious glare before turning to leave.
But Sharon’s voice cut through the air.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned to her.
Sharon spoke slowly, her tone calm but unmistakably sharp. “Despite being fully aware that I’m the child’s biological mother, Madeline has made a false police report and spread defamatory claims. Her actions have not only damaged my reputation, but also violated public security laws.”
She turned to the police officer. “Officer, we can’t let this slide. If there’s no consequence today, what happens next time-if she calls the cops again during one of my important performances, just to sabotage me?”
The officer asked, “Sharon, do you want to press charges?”
Cases like this-filing a false police report-could be big or small. If the victim didn’t pursue it, it would usually be let go. But if she chose to take action, it would have to be dealt with formally.
“Yes,” Sharon said coolly. “I want her to make a public apology for slandering me.”
She didn’t even finish the sentence before Madeline snapped, “In your dreams!”
Sharon didn’t even glance at her.
“If she refuses to cooperate,” she said plainly, “I’ll reserve the right to pursue this fully, and I’ll be filing a lawsuit.”
The officer stepped in, trying to mediate. “Ma’am, I suggest you apologize. If Sharon is a public figure, your actions are considered serious. This could result in detention. And even if it goes to court, unless Sharon agrees to a settlement, you’re
bound to lose.”
Madeline looked like she’d been’slapped. Apologize to Sharon? That was like being forced to eat glass.
“I’m her mother-in-law! I’m her elder!” she fumed, nearly choking on her rage. “You expect me to apologize to her? Never! Absolutely not!” (1
Sharon’s voice was calm, almost indifferent. “Madeline, just now, you yourself said I’m in the middle of divorcing Carter. Since we’re divorcing, we’re strangers.”
Carter looked like he was reaching his limit. “Sharon, as long as we’re not divorced, she’s still your mother-in-law. Do you really have to push her this far?”
Sharon replied, not missing a beat, “She’s your mother, not mine. When your mother wanted me arrested, you didn’t say a single word. But now that she’s facing the consequences, you suddenly want to protect her?”
Her lips curved in a faint, biting smile. “You’re not even as self-aware as your mom. At least she knows when you do something wrong, you pay the price. I’m simply doing what she said. How is that wrong?”
“Of course,” she added lightly, “if you’d rather she not apologize, then you can do it on her behalf. Just say: ‘My mother falsely accused Sharon. I apologize to Sharon on my mother’s behalf and hope she can forgive us.””
Silence fell over the entire hallway.

Making Carter say that would be hitting two birds with one stone-humiliating himself and his mother all at once. At that point, even Madeline apologizing herself would be the lesser evil.
Madeline nearly fainted from fury, trembling as she pointed a shaking finger at Sharon.
But before she could speak, Sharon calmly said, “Madeline, the police are still here. If you say anything else vulgar or insulting to me, this won’t end with just an apology. If we go to court, I’ll request a public trial. And when the headlines say ‘Biological Mother Kidnaps Child’… who knows, maybe you’ll go viral online.”

Chapter 200
Carter’s face darkened. “Sharon, don’t take this too far.”
But Sharon remained still, her expression composed, her voice unwavering.
“Your mother accused me of kidnapping my own son. And I’m the one being excessive? If you were so worried about things going too far, maybe you should’ve stopped her from doing something so stupid. Instead, you stood off to the side like some spineless mama’s boy and said nothing.”
She wasn’t going to let this go. She wanted Madeline to apologize. She would no longer allow herself to be insulted over and over without fighting back.
If Madeline looked down on her so much, then she could choke on her own pride and apologize to the very person she disdained. No matter how unbearable it was, Madeline would have to swallow it.
Dragging this matter out would do no one any good-not the Biggs family, not Biggs Group.
And for all her arrogance, Madeline knew how to calculate her losses. This time, there was no way out. She’d have to eat crow.
The muscles in her face twitched, as if even her body rejected the idea.
But for the first time, it was painfully clear-Sharon wasn’t the same woman who once kept her head down and endured every humiliation in silence. Those days were over.
From this day forward, Madeline would have to watch every word she said to Sharon.
And the thought burned. She hated it. Hated Sharon.
Seeing her mother’s tightly clenched jaw and stiff posture, Denise stepped forward, worried she might lash out again.
“Mom, don’t make Carter apologize for you. If word gets out, you’ll both be embarrassed. And besides…”
She cast a glance at Sharon. “Sharon is Theo’s mother. No matter how this sounds to others, you’re in the wrong.”
Madeline knew that. Of course, she knew. But she still wanted Sharon to suffer somehow. She couldn’t stand her defiant expression and her refusal to submit.
She had planned to deny Sharon’s identity when the police arrived-make Sharon panic, force her to beg, to grovel for forgiveness.
If Sharon groveled sincerely enough, maybe she would’ve spoken up for her, played the role of the gracious elder.
But in the end, Sharon had flipped the whole situation on its head. And Madeline had ended up the fool.
How much did Sharon not want to apologize? Once upon a time, Sharon came and went at her beck and call.
But now? Now Sharon was a fire she couldn’t smother.
If she pushed any further, Sharon really would make a scene. And if it blew up, the Biggs family and Biggs Group would be the
ones to suffer.
Gritting her teeth, Madeline finally lowered her head.
“Sharon,” she forced out, “I’m sorry. I… misunderstood you.”
Sharon didn’t press it. Her reply was simple and detached. “This ends here. I hope, for the Biggs family’s sake, you’ll think twice next time-before you disgrace yourself and everyone else.”
Even though Madeline had apologized, Sharon had no intention of forgiving her. She wasn’t in the mood for sainthood.

Both Matty and Theo were awake by then
Theo had only been pretending to be unconscious. Somewhere during the act, he’d actually fallen asleep. He woke up tet long after being brought to the hospital. The doctor ran a full check-up-everything looked fine,
Matty woke a little later. His face was still pale, but he was out of danger.
In the hospital room, Sharon looked at the boy now sitting up in bed and asked gently, “Matty, what happened? How did you fall into the water?
A flicker of panic crossed Matty’s eyes. He quickly lowered his head, trying to hide it with a rushed explanation
“I… I slipped and fell. It was my fault. It had nothing to do with Theo.”
Sharon’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Matty, all the surveillance footage from that area has been pulled It clearly shows the two of you arguing by the lake… and then, in the middle of that struggle, you tell in.”
Her tone softened. “You don’t have to be afraid just tell me what really happened, okay?”
Matty kept his head bowed, looking like a child caught in the act of doing something wrong
“I… I came out of the bathroom and saw Theo,” he said, his voice low “I ran up to ask him what he was doing there. I told him you and his dad were both looking for hirm that you were worried”
