Sonya’s expression shifted slightly.
Why?
It was because she valued her own life. She wasn’t willing to risk everything for strangers who had nothing to do with her.
But when faced with Curtis‘ question, she replied, “Because now, there’s someone I care about more.”
“What?” Curtis was momentarily taken aback.
Ignoring the rescue crew still aboard the helicopter, Sonya said firmly, “Curtis, it’s you. I care about you, and I can’t bear the thought of anything happening to you. If you weren’t on this helicopter, I would’ve flown forward without hesitation, no matter the danger.
“But because you’re here, I’ve chosen differently. Since Chloe’s already heading out to rescue them, we’ll
wait. If she really can’t save them, then I’ll drop you off first before I go.”
Curtis‘ heart trembled at her words. “I’m sorry, Sonya. I never should’ve doubted you. I…”
“It’s okay, as long as you don’t doubt my feelings for you,” Sonya said softly.
Meanwhile, the rescue crew member who’d been in the cabin the entire time couldn’t help rolling his eyes.
Sonya had insisted on flying out, and she was the one who’d demanded bringing along an injured man with his wrist in a cast. And now, she was the very person refusing to save others for his sake!
It was utterly absurd.
And Curtis, like a fool, was actually moved by her words.
To the rescue crew member, it was obvious that Sonya was scared and didn’t dare fly any closer. Her piloting skills probably weren’t that great to begin with. Honestly, that was for the best. He didn’t want to
entrust her with his life anyway.
The rescue crew member looked at the couple with open contempt. He lifted his walkie–talkie and got through to the team on Chloe’s helicopter. “What’s your status?”
“We’ve arrived at the site and are preparing to descend for the rescue.”
“Copy that. Best of luck.”
Once the call ended, Sonya and Curtis exchanged glances.
“Since you care so much about this gentleman’s life, Ms. Miller, why don’t we just head back? If
something goes wrong over there and you have to drop him off before rushing to the site, chances are that no one will make it,” the rescue crew member said sarcastically.

Sonya was left speechless.
When Chloe’s helicopter touched down on the helipad atop Quall Group’s building, medical personnel were already waiting.
The moment they saw the injured passenger, they quickly performed a brief assessment before rushing them to the hospital.
Only then did Chloe let out a long sigh and step off the helicopter. Finally, she’d safely rescued the person.
But the next moment, someone embraced her. The familiar scent instantly put Chloe at ease.
It was Brian.
He held her tightly, his hands gripping her waist and back, his face pressed deep into her shoulder.
“You’re finally back safe,” he whispered, his low, hoarse voice trembling with relief.
Chloe couldn’t help but raise her hand, gently brushing through Brian’s dark hair.

They’d been apart for just over an hour, but he was acting made it feel as though an eternity had
passed.
“Yes, I’m back safely,” she said, letting out a light laugh.
He pulled her into an even tighter hug, as if only that could soothe his unease.
Watching them, Willow bit down hard on her lip, her eyes flashing with resentment.
Meanwhile, Curtis watched Chloe as Brian held her in his arms. A flashback of her piloting the helicopter, battling turbulent winds just to rescue strangers, surged through his mind.
It was just like on the island, when she’d dived into the sea to save a child she had no connection to.
What if… what if she really was the one who’d jumped into the river and saved him all those years ago?
He immediately scolded himself. What’s wrong with him? Peter had already confirmed that Sonya was the one who’d saved him, and there were even witnesses.
Even if Chloe were the type to act selflessly, she wasn’t the one who’d ‘saved him.
Still, his gaze lingered on Chloe’s hand as she stroked Brian’s hair.
That same hand had once gently caressed his own hair, but now her tenderness was reserved for another.
“Curtis!” Sonya’s voice carried a twinge of jealousy. “Let’s go.”
Not only had Chloe stolen the spotlight, but Sonya also felt humiliated. She was seething, and Curtis‘ lingering gaze on Chloe only made her anxiety worse.
Finally, Curtis looked away and nodded.

As they stepped into the elevator, Sonya asked abruptly, “Curtis, if a good opportunity comes up, would you really make our relationship public?”
He hesitated for a moment before answering, “Of course.”
“That’s great,” Sonya said, looking down. If he couldn’t find the right moment, she would make one for him.
Chloe was startled to find Brian in her room that night, just as she was about to go to bed.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“I can’t sleep,” he admitted. Every time he closed his eyes, the scene of her flying the helicopter away from him earlier replayed in his mind.
Even though he knew she was an exceptional pilot, his chest still tightened with panic.
He’d wanted to board the helicopter with her, but her reasons for refusing were so logical that he hadn’t
been able to argue.
He knew she was driven by conviction and a strong sense of justice.
She shone so brightly and beside her, he couldn’t help but feel small.
A part of him hated that she would risk her own safety for the sake of others but at the same time, that was exactly the quality that drew him to her.
The contradiction left him torn.
Chloe studied Brian as he stood in front of her. “You can’t sleep, so you want me to tell you a story?”
“I’m not a child,” he replied.
“So?”
“I want to sleep with you.”
Chloe froze. Sleep? What kind of sleep was he talking about?
“You want to sleep with me?” she asked.
“Yes,” he nodded, stepping toward her. “I can’t sleep alone tonight. I’m afraid…”
“Afraid?” She arched her brow. Hadn’t he already silenced everyone in the Steele family who opposed him? Besides, she’d personally upgraded the villa’s security system just a few days ago.
“I’m afraid of losing you. I’m afraid something might happen to you,” he murmured.
Chloe recalled the look on his face when she’d flown the helicopter to save those people. “But I came back safe and sound, didn’t I?”
“Even so, that sense of dread won’t leave me,” he said softly. “Chloe, please let me sleep beside you. I

His eyes brimmed with both anxiety and longing. Even if Chloe wanted to refuse, the words caught in her
throat.
After a long pause, she finally said, “Fine. Let’s just go to sleep.”
After all, she was the cause of his anxiety.
He smiled faintly and lay down beside her.
With Brian there, even the spacious bed felt a little cramped. As Chloe reached over him to pull up the blanket, his hand suddenly caught her wrist.
“Chloe,” he whispered, “I promised I’d never do anything to you without your permission. But what about you? Don’t you want to do something to me?”
