Chapter 17

1/2

Serena drew in a sharp breath. “You want to get rid of Avery’s baby? Damien, have you lost your mind-”

“Watch your mouth!” Damien cut in icily. “If a single word of this gets out, I won’t spare you!”

He flicked a glance at the clock. “It’s late. You can go. And this is my home with Avery. From now on, unless one of us says otherwise, don’t show up here again.”

The color drained from Serena’s face, and anger made her shake. “Damien, don’t forget, if it hadn’t been for me, you would have-”

He let out a mocking laugh. “I don’t deny that you saved me. I remember it. For five years, I have treated you well and gone out of my way to help your father.

“I can cover any financial need you have. But if you plan to hang that debt over my head for life or hold it hostage, give it up. No one threatens me.”

“I… I didn’t mean it like that,” Serena said, her voice trembling.

Damien’s patience was gone. “Leave. Stop hovering in front of me for no reason.”

He turned and headed for the bedroom.

Serena refused to let it go. Outside the door, she pleaded, “Dami, you misunderstood me. Open the door

and let me explain, please.”

“If you don’t want the Langfords to go bankrupt, walk out now,” he said with a cold laugh.

Serena flinched. She couldn’t understand why he had suddenly turned on her so harshly.

Before she could make sense of it, a bodyguard appeared with a stony expression. “Ms. Langford, Mr.

Whitlow asked me to see you out.”

“No need,” she snapped through her teeth. “I can walk myself!”

She stormed out of the villa, slid into her car, and pounded the steering wheel,

What did that bitch Avery have that she didn’t? Why would Damien fall for her?

The more Serena stewed, the hotter her temper burned. She unlocked her phone and fired off a string of

messages.

“Bitch, since you walked out, don’t you dare come back! If you do, I’ll make your life a living hell!

“At the dinner tomorrow, Damien is going to tell everyone the baby you’re carrying is Julian’s! Don’t believe me? Go get a DNA test.”

…

Avery didn’t see those messages until the next morning.

Chapter 17

2/2

Julian had told her yesterday that, before he flew back to Goldville, he had already sent people to investigate quietly.

The findings confirmed that someone had stolen his sperm sample just over a month ago during a routine body check.

Avery had passed every piece of proof to her attorney.

Just then, she received a message from Julian.

“I’m downstairs. Come down when you’re ready.”

Avery checked the time. It was a little after 8:00 am. He had said 9:00 am. Why was he early?

Half an hour later, Avery stepped out of her building and saw Julian climb out of an MPV.

He wore a bespoke suit that fit as if it had been built on him. It was hard to look anywhere else.

Once she got in, he handed her a wrapped breakfast sandwich.

“How did you know I skipped breakfast?” she asked, surprised.

“Pregnant women tend to sleep more,” he said with a quick smile at the corners of his eyes. “I figured you might be rushing. Better to have it and not need it.”

His thoughtfulness won her over again. She couldn’t help thinking Julian might not only make a good father-he might be a good husband, too.
