Chapter 100 

Elena said dinner was on her, but when she wanted to pay the bill after they finished their dinner, she was told that Alexander had already paid beforehand. 

“Mr. Golden, didn’t we agree that dinner was supposed to be my treat?” Elena looked at him with a sulky expression. 

“I’m sorry. I forgot,” Alexander replied confidently. 

Elena stared at the faint smile on his lips, and she suddenly realized that he was really good at playing dirty. 

“If you’re really so forgetful, you’ll have to keep a memo,” Elena said with a half-smile. 

“I only take note of important things. For example, you still owe me two meals, Ms. Miller,” Alexander replied. 

“Is that so?” Elena tilted her head and said, “I don’t think so.” 

She locked eyes with Alexander and replied by imitating his tone earlier, “I’m sorry. I forgot.” 

Alexander chuckled softly, looking dotingly at the cunning glint in her eyes. “It’s fine as long as I remember.” 

Just as they were about to leave, they turned around and ran into someone familiar-Zachary. 

He was standing five steps away from them. The shoulders of his black coat were covered in raindrops, but his gaze was locked on Elena’s face. He was holding a black umbrella as well, and the droplets were sliding down the umbrella, forming a dark dot on the ground. 

Elena was a little stunned. She hadn’t thought that she would run into Zachary at a moment like this. 

She could see the complicated emotions swirling in Zachary’s eyes-there was reluctance to admit defeat, an attempt to feel her out, and also stubbornness. 

“What a coincidence, Alex, Ms. Miller,” said Zachary. His voice was deeper than usual, with a barely 

noticeable rasp as it trailed off. 

He looked past Alexander and stared at Elena. “I’m meeting a friend here for dinner. I didn’t think I would bump into you.” 

Alexander silently took half a step forward, blocking Zachary’s line of vision. 

“It is quite a coincidence,” he said. 

Zachary’s gaze grew even more complicated, and he clenched his fists tightly. 

Elena had been very serious when she had mistaken him for her fiance, but Zachary could tell that she had simply been taking responsibility for the marriage alliance. 

Of course, that was more than normal. After all, a marriage alliance between two families was simply a business collaboration. It had nothing to do with feelings. 

Zachary had only pretended to be her fiance to steal a chance to get closer to her and pursue her. 

However, the mood between Elena and Alexander was completely different. Why was it different when it 

was Alexander instead? 

Zachary felt a piercing pain in his heart at the thought of how Elena had returned the painting to him through her maid. 

He suddenly said, “Ms. Miller, I’ve always wanted to explain what happened before-” 

“No need,” Elena said softly but with an unquestionable resolve. 

She touched Alexander’s sleeve lightly and said, “Let’s go.” 

A faint hint of warmth flashed in Alexander’s eyes as he looked down and saw her fingertips subtly brushing against his sleeve. 

“Alright, let’s go,” he answered. 

Elena walked off with Alexander, but she could feel Zachary’s gaze glued to her back. 

After they got into the car, she took the initiative to say, “I mistakenly thought that Zachary was my fiance.

‘It was still a little embarrassing to bring it up, but she didn’t wish to hide it from Alexander. “I was a fool. 

I didn’t ask and clarify,” she said with a sigh. 

Alexander raised his eyebrow and said, “No wonder you kept saying that you wanted to keep a distance 

from me.”
