Chapter 90 

At that moment, Zachary found even breathing incredibly difficult. It took him a great deal of effort before he finally found his voice again. 

“It… It’s not your fault. It’s mine. I shouldn’t have let you get the wrong idea and failed to explain things. I even deliberately misled you instead,” said Zachary. He felt as if his heart were enveloped by thorny vines, piercing him and making him bleed. 

“But Ms. Miller, I wasn’t lying when I said all those things to you today,” he said miserably. 

“Thank you, but that’s not important anymore,” Elena said gently. Then, she ended the call right away. 

Zachary’s eyes were filled with pain as he watched his phone screen gradually turn dark. 

Just a moment ago, he had been looking forward to their date tomorrow and to her attending his 

exhibition a little later on. 

But he had forgotten that he had stolen all of those moments. And what was stolen was never meant to 

last forever. 

As Elena ended the call, her slightly pale cheeks were reflected on her screen. The warm lights in the living room were shining on the fine wool of the couch, but it couldn’t warm her chilly fingers. 

Her true fiance was Alexander. 

His name kept echoing in her head. The image of his back as he had rushed off last night, as well as the urgent matter that Jane said had to be kept under wraps, replayed itself over and over again in her mind. 

Seeing that Elena was frozen in place, Jane tugged on her hand gently and said, “Lena, don’t worry about Alexander too much. He’s the heir of the Golden family. They won’t let anything happen to him.” 

Elena nodded, but she felt something weighing on her chest. It was unusual for her to feel this uneasy 

when Alexander had just gone abroad for some urgent matter. 

She comforted herself, convincing herself that maybe he was just there to take care of some business matters. After all, the Golden family had businesses all over the world. 

After she returned to her bedroom, she took out her phone. The urge to call Alexander was strong, but 

she was afraid she would be bothering him. Having no choice, she let it go. 

The night sky outside the window gradually darkened, and the moonlight shone on her phone. 

Right at that moment, her phone rang again. This time, it was a foreign number she didn’t recognize. 

Elena hesitated, but she still answered the call. 

“Hello?” she said. 

There were a few seconds of silence on the other end of the call. Then, the familiar yet clearly exhausted voice of a man sounded, accompanied by static electricity sounds and faint conversations in a foreign 

tongue in the background. 

“Ms. Miller?” 

It was Alexander. 

Elena’s heart skipped a beat, and her fingers tightened around her phone. “M-Mr. Golden?” 

“It’s me.” His voice was even deeper and huskier, yet it was still undoubtedly calm. 

“Where are you right now? Are you alright? I heard that you… have gone abroad to deal with something,” 

said Elena. 

She probably sounded too anxious and worried, so much so that Alexander was slightly taken aback. Then, he chuckled and said, “I’m doing great. Don’t worry.” 

Elena said nothing. 

His tone carried a faint, barely noticeable trace of comfort as he said, “It’s no big deal. I’ll be back after I 

take care of it.” 

Before he finished his sentence, a miserable scream sounded on his end. Elena was so shocked that she 

immediately asked, “What happened?” 

“It’s nothing,” he replied, sounding as calm as ever. “It was a pig squealing.” 

Elena couldn’t wrap her head around that. His reply was simply too absurd. 

“Alright. I have something urgent to take care of, so I’ll have to hang up now. Ms. Miller, I’m very happy I 

was able to talk to you for a while.” 

The moonlight outside the window seemed a little brighter, illuminating the emotions in Elena’s eyes as they gradually became clearer.
