Chapter 39

When Alexander reached the elevator, he saw a nurse blocking two women, refusing to let them into Elena’s ward.

Nadine was fuming. She had never wanted to apologize to Elena in the first place. Josephine had forced her to come, yet Elena had the audacity to stop them from entering.

She did not care to waste words on the nurse, but he was skilled enough to block both of them completely.

Soon enough, her temper boiled over, and she shouted, “Do you even know who we are? If you offend the

Riggs family, I’ll make sure you suffer in Slushire.”

The nurse ignored her.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Alexander approaching. She turned at once and greeted respectfully, “Hello, Mr. Golden.”

His cold gaze fell on her. As her eyes met his, a chill ran down her spine. In that moment, she realized his look carried not only coldness but also disgust. It was as if she were nothing more than filth to him.

“Damn it…” she thought.

She had a fine figure and a pretty look. Plenty of men went to great lengths to court her, but why would Alexander look at her like that?

It had to be Elena. She must have filled his ears with slander about her!

“Mr. Golden, does this person work for you?” Josphine asked with a forced smile.

Alexander kept quiet, so she added, “I’ve been worried about Elena ever since she was admitted. So, I

made her favorite soup and came to see her, but your man here refused to let us through… Elena’s my daughter-in-law. Isn’t this a little too much?”

In truth, the nurse had not been acting under his orders, but he didn’t bother correcting her.

With an indifferent tone, he repeated the words, “Daughter-in-law?”

“Yes, Elena’s my son’s wife. So, she’s naturally my…”

“If I remember it correctly,” Alexander interrupted, “Ms. Miller made it clear that she and Justin have

broken up. They’ve nothing to do with each other anymore.”

Josephine forced a smile and said, “Well, young couples fight all the time. How can anyone take that seriously? Besides, Elena and Justin are legally married. Breaking up doesn’t mean anything… Right, Nadine?”

She felt intimidated by Alexander, so she was desperate to find someone to back her up. The only person she could turn to now was Nadine.

“Ah… Yes, of course,” replied Nadine, with gullt flickering in her eyes.

Josephine knew about the improper relationship between Nadine and Justin, but she had no idea they had secretly registered their marriage. She also didn’t know that the marriage certificate between Justin and Elena had been fake from the very beginning.

Alexander caught every trace of Nadine’s guilty expression. A mocking curve tugged at his lips as he asked, “How dare a culprit appear before their victim?”

“I’m not the…” Nadine blurted, wanting to argue. But when her eyes met his icy glare, she shuddered and

fell silent.

He had no intention of letting them disrupt Elena’s peace. He shot the nurse a look, and the nurse

immediately said, “Please leave at once. Otherwise, I’ll have the guards drag you two out. You’ll look really bad when that happens.”

Josephine’s chest burned with anger, but there was nothing she could do with Alexander there. She

cursed Elena for blocking her number. She couldn’t even reach Elena now, no matter how she tried.

She then made a mental note to talk to Justin about this. The next time Elena came crawling back to him

to admit her mistakes, they would make sure she suffered for it.

“Let’s go,” she finally said to Nadine.

Nadine had never wanted to apologize to Elena anyway, so she instantly felt relieved.

What she hadn’t expected was to be taken into custody that very night.
