Chapter 22

Elena rolled her eyes, both exasperated and amused. “What explanation do you expect from me?”

“Look for yourself!” Justin pushed his phone toward her.

Elena frowned slightly as she scanned the screen. She was annoyed at being photographed without her knowledge, not because she felt guilty.

There was nothing between her and Alexander now, and even if she were flirting with another man, Justin

had no right to judge her.

“Alexander deliberately made things difficult for me last night, made me drink so much red wine, and you

… You’re getting so close to him.” Justin clenched his fists, his eyes reddening.

“Lena, since when did you stop caring about my feelings?”

Nadine stood beside him, trying to stir things up. “Ms. Miller, I know Mr. Golden is handsome and he’s the

heir of the Golden family in Hupolis, but you can’t just ignore Justin like that.”

Elena’s eyes flicked to Nadine’s wrist. “Looks like your wrist’s fine, Ms. Riggs. You’re still full of energy,

just like always.”

“You…”

Nadine wanted to argue, but she felt guilty. She had only made a small scratch on her wrist as a stunt, which explained why she was so full of energy.

Elena used this to mock her, and Nadine didn’t know how to respond.

“Don’t change the subject,” Justin snapped, standing up abruptly. “Between you and Alexander-”

“Mr. Golden saved me when my life was on the line,” Elena cut him off.

In reality, Nadine hadn’t been very close to them and wasn’t in the truck’s path that morning.

The out-of-control truck had been headed straight for Elena. It couldn’t have hit Nadine at all.

But Justin’s first instinct had been to rush to Nadine’s side and protect her.

Elena didn’t bother explaining. She had already seen Justin’s true nature long ago and had given up on him.

It was ridiculous that he still dared to question her.

A sarcastic smile curved Elena’s lips. “When you were so focused on protecting your beloved sister, it was Mr. Golden who stepped in and risked his life to save me. Should I just cut ties with him because of

that?”

Hearing this, a flicker of guilt passed through Justin’s eyes, but he quickly tried to defend himself. “Nadi

had an injury on her hand, so I focused on her first. I didn’t want anything to happen to you either. You were fine at the time, and I thought you could get out of the way.”

“Exactly,” Nadine chimed in from the side. “If you had just reacted faster, Ms. Miller, you could have avoided it. But you froze right there.”

Elena spun around and glared at Nadine. Her eyes were icy and as sharp as daggers.

Nadine instinctively shrank back under that look, realizing she had overstepped.

“Ms. Riggs, do you know I was in a car accident two years ago?”

Nadine stiffened, suddenly raising her voice. “How would I know that!”

“Really? I didn’t realize you didn’t know,” Elena said calmly, her tone faintly amused. “Two years ago…”

“I don’t want to hear it!” Nadine shouted, covering her ears. “Elena, who cares about your past?”

2/3

“Why are you bringing up something from two years ago out of the blue?” Justin’s expression darkened.

Elena just smiled lightly. “I was just sharing some past events. I didn’t expect Ms. Riggs to react so strongly.”

Both Justin and Nadine froze.

“Mr. Riggs, it’s still work hours. I think you should sign this document first,” Elena said, pointing to the

document on his desk.

Justin felt a strange ache in his chest, as if her fingertip had pressed against it, a prickling pain spreading through him. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard, wanting to say something, but in the end,

he only picked up the pen and quickly signed.

Elena took the signed document and was about to leave when Justin called after her, “Lena… I was wrong just now. I was too harsh with you.

“But seeing you with another man… It upset me. You’re my wife and I…”

“Mr. Riggs,” Elena interrupted, her expression neutral. She had no desire to hear him continue.

“We’re still in the office-you shouldn’t be saying things like that here.”

With that, she stepped out.

As soon as the office door closed, Nadine burst into tears. “Jus! You said she’s your wife? Then what am

1?”

“Nadi, stop it.” Justin rubbed his temples in frustration.

“I told you, getting that marriage certificate was only to help you out. Lena will always be my wife.”

“She was so close to another man!” Nadine snapped.

Justin thought for a moment and said, “Like Lena said, Alexander just saved her. She can’t exactly cut

ties with him now. Lena loves me, that’s undeniable. She’s probably just sulking a bit right now.”

After all, he had chosen to save Nadine that morning. It was no small matter, and Elena being upset was understandable. He knew he would have to make it up to her later.

Nadine ground her teeth in frustration. After a while, unease crept back into her expression.

She asked, “What did Elena mean by bringing up that car accident two years ago? Does she… know?”

“That’s impossible,” Justin said immediately.

“It’s already been two years. If she were going to notice anything, she would have noticed it long ago.

“How could she only find out now? Besides, that man has been dead in prison for years. Don’t worry about

it, Nadi.”

“That’s a relief,” Nadine said with a sigh. But seeing Elena’s calm demeanor and noticing how concerned Justin seemed about her, Nadine’s jealousy flared again.

She cursed inwardly. “Elena, just wait. I’ll show you what it feels like to have your weaknesses exposed…”
