Chapter 52

1/2

Nicole refused Hayden’s request and went looking for Taylor instead. But neither Taylor nor the other staff members seemed to be around.

In the end, she had no choice but to retrieve the documents and head to Hayden’s office herself.

She happened to meet Caleb when she arrived as he’d just come out of the CEO’s office.

Caleb looked dejected when he emerged. His head was hung low, and he nearly bumped into Nicole on

the way out.

He instinctively stepped aside to make way for the incoming person. But when he looked up to see that it was Nicole, his gaze grew mocking.

Caleb casually tucked his hands into his pockets. What are you doing here?”

Nicole walked past him with the documents still in hand. That’s none of your business.”

Caleb extended an arm, blocking her way. His tone was mocking as he said, I heard that Matthew is staying with his greataunt instead of you these days. What a failure of a mother you are to lose even your own son. You’re clearly a terrible person to be around!”

Nicole remained calm and collected, quite unlike how distraught Caleb had expected her to be.

Oh, I think I’m still pretty decent. At least I’m not as despicable as you,she said.

Caleb’s smile stiffened.

Nicole was usually very respectful when speaking to people like him. But she clearly no longer felt the

same way.

Caleb ground his teeth, thinking about what to say to get on Nicole’s nerves. With a sneer, he finally said, You really have Gloria to thank for still being able to live comfortably in that house without being kicked out. She’s at the hospital every day.

Say, don’t you think she’ll want to head to the city hall with Hayden once she’s free?”

Caleb was purposely baiting Nicole with his words. He was certain that Nicole would want to know why Gloria and Hayden were going to the city hall together.

Don’t you want to know what those two are up to? Why don’t you go home and carefully look through your marriage certificate to see whose names are actually on it?he added.

Nicole was beyond amused. Caleb hadn’t even been trying to keep his act together lately. Did he really

think his words could hurt her?

Nicole smiled. Rather than spewing garbage here, why don’t you spend your time on better things instead? Like working on protecting that land you manipulated your way into stealing from me, for instance.”

Chapter 52

2/2

Caleb’s smile froze on his face. Understanding dawned on him.

It was no wonder Hayden had called Caleb over earlier and said he’d let the mattergo this time on account of their friendship. Hayden had said that Caleb shouldn’t repeat his actions, lest the latter was ready to face the consequences.

Meanwhile, Caleb had been clueless as to what Hayden was talking about.

So it had been about that piece of land all along.

Not only did Nicole tell Hayden about it, but she’d even found a way to take it back from Caleb!

It was no wonder Caleb’s cousin had called him to say that someone else had secured the land. Caleb had initially thought it was good news. If someone else had bought that land, Nicole wouldn’t be able to

acquire it anymore.

Caleb gritted his teeth together. He should’ve told his cousin to be more careful with his investigations!

Now, Caleb had both upset Hayden and lost the piece of land!

You’re so damn capable, aren’t you, Nicole? Tell me, who did you ask for help in getting the land back?”

Nicole narrowed her eyes. If you want to know, then beg me to tell you.”

Get off your damned high horse! I’ll never beg you for anything!Caleb glared angrily at Nicole, hands

balled into fists.

Even if Gloria hadn’t asked, Caleb definitely had to figure out a way to permanently remove Nicole from

Hayden’s side.

A cold sneer slowly surfaced on his lips.

Caleb was certain that Hayden wouldn’t accept a woman who had slept with other men, even if it was

Nicole, whom Hayden doted on.

We’ll see who has the last laugh,Caleb spat before leaving.

Nicole ignored him. She instead went inside and delivered the documents to Hayden.

Before she left, Hayden implied that Matthew had mostly recovered from his illness and that Nicole should pay him a visit.

Nicole pretended not to hear Hayden. When she got a text from Eugene after leaving the hospital, she

went to meet him at a cafe.

Eugene was already there waiting for her. He smiled when she arrived and turned his laptop screen over

to her.

Nicole walked over and saw that Shawn was onscreen in a video call.

Shawn’s smile stiffened when he saw Nicole, having expected to see her bright and happy. Worry and concern then filled his expression.
