Chapter 20

1/2

In the car, Nicole was completely oblivious that Matthew had seen her leave with Jeremiah. She turned to

Jeremiah and asked, Dr. Petersen, why have you come personally?”

Despite his young age, Jeremiah was already a department head, which showed just how talented he

was. Hence, Nicole had always trusted him. Nonetheless, she never would’ve thought he would seek her

out due to his worry that she would insist on attending the family day event.

Ignoring her, Jeremiah stopped the car by the side of a road. His expression was stern as he headed to

the trunk to pull out a medical kit, blood pressure monitor, and other tools.

Don’t move. I’m running some tests on you.”

Well aware that he was only so angry due to his concern for her, Nicole obediently cooperated.

Once Jeremiah had finished his tests, his tense expression finally relaxed. Thankfully, you only have a

slightly higher blood pressure.”

That’s because you scared me, Dr. Petersen. Why have you come to the kindergarten yourself? To catch

me in the act?Nicole tried to ease the atmosphere by saying that in a joking tone.

Jeremiah stared at her solemnly as he tidied up his medical kit. This isn’t a joke. Let me repeat myself

one more time. The most important thing you have to do the next few days is to keep your body’s vital

signs stable and not get too agitated. Do you want to successfully leave in one week or not?”

I do,Nicole answered without hesitation.

Then don’t do something like this again. Stop making me worry.”

Nicole froze when she heard that. In Jeremiah’s eyes, she could distinctly see the genuine concern and

worry he held for her. In an instant, her eyes reddened, and she almost burst into tears.

Ever since she was diagnosed with her brain tumor, she hadn’t let anyone know about it, especially Shawn, as she was afraid he would worry.

In truth, she was terrified of dying. She was scared that her condition would worsen before she could

finish handling her matters. There was still so much she had to do, so she was also worried that by the

time she was done, she wouldn’t have many days left to spend with her brother.

However, there wasn’t a single person by her side to care for her.

Hayden had lied to her all these years, while Matthew hated her. Meanwhile, Caleb couldn’t wait for her to

step aside and leave.

The abrupt display of concern from Jeremiah caused her emotions to surge, shattering the barrier she had built around herself.

SSorry, Dr. Petersen. II’ve made you worry. I won’t do it again. I’m so sorry”

Chapter 20

2/2

She sobbed, her words barely coherent.

Shocked, Jeremiah scrambled to grab her some tissues. Don’t cry! I won’t speak so harshly with you anymore, alright? I was just scared that your body would give out on you. As a doctor, of course I would be worried about my patient. Please understand and stop crying, okay? I can’t take it when women cry!”

Nicole continued to cry for a good while longer before finally stopping. It was only then she felt embarrassed at her loss in composure.

Bowing her head, she said, Sorry. I temporarily lost control of myself. That was a shameful display.”

Sweating from the nervousness her breakdown had caused, Jeremiah also dabbed his forehead with a

tissue.

I know you’re under a lot of pressure, so I won’t lecture you anymore. To be honest, I sought you out because I have something for you.”

With that said, he handed her a box of medicine.

Nicole accepted it from him and opened it, realizing it was a drug she hadn’t taken before. The language

on the box wasn’t one she was familiar with. Curious, she asked, What’s this?”

A newlyresearched drug from an international pharmaceutical company. It should inhibit the development of brain tumors. There weren’t any problems during clinical testing, but it hasn’t been

released to the public yet.”

Starting the engine, Jeremiah added, My friend gave it to me. You should try it.”

A wave of gratitude washed over Nicole, and she said earnestly, Thank you, Dr. Petersen.”

Jeremiah’s lips quirked into a small smile. It’s nothing. But I can’t guarantee that the drug will work for

you.”

Nicole nodded with a smile. After that bout of crying, she was feeling much better. Whether the drug

worked or not was something she didn’t care about anymore. She was simply grateful that Jeremiah

would still put so much effort and care into her. After all, she was merely someone on death’s door.

She had never held any hope of recovering from her cancer anyway. All she wanted was to treasure the

time she had left.
