One Mistake 7

Evelyn stood in the farthest corner of the chapel, her nails digging so deep into her palms that crescent–shaped marks were left behind. 

Tomorrow. 

Tomorrow marked the end of the mandatory cooling–off period. After that, she could finally walk away- 

for good. 

But today, she still had to watch Brandon marry someone else. 

The aisle was lined with guests. His mother sat in a wheelchair, beaming with joy. 

The music began to play. Brandon, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, walked slowly down the aisle with 

Vanessa on his arm. 

Evelyn’s mind drifted back to her own wedding. 

The same chapel. The same aisle. 

Back then, Brandon had been so nervous his palms were slick with sweat. But he’d held her hand tight and whispered, “Evelyn, I finally get to marry you.‘

Now he was walking that same path… just with someone else. 

A single tear slid down her cheek before she could stop it. She quickly looked away to wipe it, but the whispers around her had already started. 

“Isn’t that Brandon’s ex–wife? How does she have the nerve to show up?” 

“Rumor is she’s unstable. Nearly drove his mother into a breakdown.” 

“Pathetic, really.” 

Evelyn didn’t flinch. She just stared at the man on stage. 

As if sensing her gaze, Brandon looked out into the crowd. His eyes found her tear–streaked face. 

He paused. For a moment, his expression shifted, conflicted. 

But in the end, he said nothing yet. 

He just turned back and carried on with the ceremony. 

You’ll understand one day, Evelyn… right? 

The guests eventually dispersed. The celebration was over.

Evelyn had just reached the master bedroom when she froze. 

Soft, breathy sounds filtered through the door–moans, low gasps, the creak of bedsprings. 

“Brandon… slow down,” Vanessa murmured between breathy giggles. 

Her voice sliced through Evelyn like a sharp, cold, deliberate blade. 

She stood paralyzed, her fingertips trembling. And then she heard Brandon’s voice, low, strained, and unmistakably intimate: 

“Keep your voice down.” 

“What’s the point?” Vanessa giggled. “She’s going to find out anyway.” 

“Shut up.” 

“Do you ever regret marrying her?” Vanessa whispered suddenly. 

Evelyn stopped breathing. 

There was silence for a few beats–then came Brandon’s reply, laced with frustration: “…Yeah. I regret it.” 

Those words hit harder than any slap. 

She remembered him standing before the pastor, promising, “I will never regret this, not in this lifetime.” 

But now, he regretted everything. 

Evelyn backed away, stumbling blindly to the guest room. She shut the door and collapsed against it. 

The noises from the other side didn’t stop. Vanessa’s moans. Brandon’s growls. The bed creaking beneath 

them. 

And finally, his mother’s cheerful voice outside the room: “Hurry up and give me a grandchild already! I’m 

ready to be a grandma!” 

Evelyn sat curled against the cold wall, laughing soundlessly as tears poured down her face like a flood. 

By the next morning, she’d packed all her things. 

She glanced down at her phone. 

Today was the day. 

Laughter floated up from downstairs. 

Evelyn descended the staircase to find Brandon adjusting a silk scarf around his mother’s neck. Vanessa stood beside them, carrying a designer purse. 

Chapter 7

The three of them looked like a picture–perfect family. 

“Well, look who’s up early,” Mrs. Caldwell said coolly, her smile dropping like a curtain the second she saw Evelyn. “We’re heading out. Make sure to change the sheets in the master bedroom.” 

Vanessa added sweetly, “Auntie, let the housekeeper do it. Evelyn’s hand is still healing, remember?” 

Only then did Brandon seem to notice her. He frowned. “Where are you going?” 

She looked him straight in the eyes, her voice calm and steady. “Today’s the last day of the cooling–off 

period. I’m going to file the divorce settlement. 

He blinked, caught off guard. “But I promised to take Mom and Vanessa to the hot springs resort today.” 

The air went still. 

“Just cancel it,” he said suddenly. “Just let me take them away for a few days. Then we’ll talk. Everything 

can go back to normal.” 

“Alright.” She nodded gently. “Sure.” 

Brandon sighed in relief and turned to help his mother into the car. “Mom, let’s get going.” 

Evelyn stayed frozen in place, watching the black Maybach slowly pull away from the estate. 

Only when the car disappeared from view did she wipe her tears, grab her suitcase, and walk straight to the 

front gate without looking back.

The official seal came down with a soft, final thunk. 

“Here’s your divorce certificate,” the clerk said, handing her a deep red folder. “The asset division agreement has been processed. Your ex–husband has already signed.” 

Evelyn didn’t even glance at it. She slipped the document into a courier envelope, filled in Brandon’s family estate as the recipient. 

“Please mail it to this address. Cash on delivery.” 

Outside the civil office, a car was already waiting at the curb. The driver waved when he saw her. “Over 

here!” 

Evelyn opened the car door, then paused. 

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her wedding ring. 

Brandon had slipped it onto her finger years ago by the ocean, down on one knee. Inside the band, a single

She stared at it for a moment… then tossed it out the window. 

It hit the pavement with a soft ding–and was crushed under the wheels of a passing car. 

“Let’s go,” she said as she shut the door behind her. “I’m never coming back.”
