paying a courtesy visit.” 

Deloris was so angry she laughed, staring straight at Ellsworth 

and changing her form of address. “Mr. Townsend, was it also 

courtesy when you had my Miss pretend to be Ms. Graham at 

the hotel to clean up your messes?” 

“You haven’t even finished the divorce with my Miss, yet you 

parade around with Ms. Graham. the Graham family goes 

around calling you their son–in–law. Is that courtesy?” 

“Over the years, women have come to my Miss every so often, 

asking her to step aside, and you keep making her deal with 

those things. Is that courtesy?” 

“You didn’t have a wedding, didn’t even buy my Miss a wedding 

ring, but you wear matching rings with other women. Is that 

courtesy?” 

Seeing Ellsworth’s face change, Deloris didn’t back down and

not well–educated, but I know none of these things are in line

After following Ellsworth to Amiyah Graham’s ward, Deloris had 

been holding in her anger until now. 

So, now that she ran into Ellsworth, she said everything she 

wanted to say. 

If she offended him, so be it. If she was aggressive, so be it. 

Harriet and Ralph were dignified people, mindful of the old ties 

between the families, but she couldn’t bear it and had to speak 

up for them.

Inside the hospital room, Harriet sat motionless on the bed, 

head down, flipping through her book as if nothing had 

happened, her eyes calm. 

When Deloris was speaking, she wasn’t far from Harriet’s room. 

The door wasn’t fully closed, so Harriet heard everything. 

She didn’t go out to stop Deloris or prevent her from scolding Ellsworth–not because she wanted Deloris to scold him, but because she didn’t want to play the saint and defend him at this 

point. 

At that moment, the hospital room door was pushed open.

At his words, Harriet gently put down her book and looked up at 

Ellsworth.

“Ellsworth, you’re not my parent. You have no right to say that to 

me.”
