Chapter 10
“Yes, you can claim you don’t remember–but people never change. Sooner or later, you’ll be exposed whe
out, do you think Nicholas will still accept a wife like you?”
the truth comes
“She’s a born villain, guilty of every kind of evil,” I continued coldly. “You stole my sister’s fiancé and had me thrown out of my own home.“!
My words shattered her composure. Verena shrieked and lunged at me.B
“Shut up! What right do you, a bitch, have to lecture me? You’re nothing but trash! You deserved to be kidnapped! Our family was broke–we couldn’t afford two kids! Without you, I could finally wear new clothes and take piano lessons!“” Her face twisted with hatred.
you hadn’t been
“I wanted you to die out there! That way, they’d only love me! And I was right–look at you now. Even if abandoned, what kind of life would you have? Ordinary, pathetic. Better to gamble everything so I could live the life you never
would.”
Her confession, venomous and unrestrained, streamed live across the internet. W
When she finally stopped, I lifted my phone, showing her the screen.
“Thank you for your testimony.”
“You set me up, bitch!” She shrieked, swinging her hand at me. But I slammed the door shut, leaving her outside to claw at nothing.
Nicholas called soon after. I let it ring.
Through the security feed, I watched Verena collapse in the hallway, sobbing. Instead of triumph, a strange emptiness settled
over me.
As I packed my bags, Gareth messaged: Do you need help?
I replied with a smiley. No. I’m moving on.
Later, I heard the fallout. Verena’s degree revoked. The Harrington engagement was canceled. She locked herself inside, never stepping out. My parents, humiliated, blamed me for everything in front of the neighbors.
Then Nichol
reached me again. His voice was heavy with regret. “I was wrong, Mira. Verena lied–I thought you wandered off yourself. And since you never went to school, I thought you weren’t suited to my family. I’m sorry. Can you give me another chance? Verena might be beautiful, but what I loved–what I still love is you. Your strength, your heart.”
I drew in a deep breath. That love had already died.
“Do you know the biggest difference between us, Nicholas?”
“You grew up in a happy family, so you believe everyone is good. But I never had that luxury. I don’t believe in kindness, because I’ve never been shown any.”
I went on, my voice steady:
Do you know what it’s like to sleep in a cold, damp woodshed? With rats, cockroaches, and insects biting your skin until you scar? That was my childhood.”
He fell silent, his voice breaking when he finally spoke. “Mira…“X
“I’m not telling you this to gain pity. I just want you to understand–we were never from the same world. You chose to leave me, and I respected it. I have no regrets about what we had, but it ends here.“}
I changed my number and disappeared into a small southern city.
On weekends, I volunteered at an orphanage. The children, though parentless, laughed freely, their eyes shining like stars.” One afternoon, a little girl with pigtails tugged at my hand.
“Sister, why are you always smiling?”
I brushed her hair back gently
“Because I know that every day from now on will only get better.”
Blood ties don’t guarantee love. When they rot, they only become shackles.
And once you break free, life finally begins.
