Rosalie nodded sincerely. “Ms. Ortega, you’re right.”
But in the next moment, Dawn’s eyes twinkled mischievously, and a sly smile returned to her face. “Now
that you’ve let him go, you’d better grab the next one!
“I’m telling you-my grandson is exceptional! He’s six foot two, broad-shouldered, has long legs, and is a little grumpy but completely reliable! Shall I introduce him to you?”
Caught off guard by the sudden turn in conversation, Rosalie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry and
could only admit, “Ms. Ortega, I’m already married.”
Dawn’s smile froze instantly. “What? Married?”
“Yes, we married in a rush. We haven’t had the ceremony yet, but when that day comes, you’ll be the first
to receive a wedding favor.”
Dawn clicked her tongue with a playful expression of regret. “What a shame! My perfect grandson now
has got no chance,” she said with a sigh.
Then, her gaze shifted back to Rosalie. “Rosalie, I can tell something is weighing on your mind, and it’s
not just about love, is it?”
Rosalie was startled. She smiled bitterly and shared her confusion about wanting to become Manfred’s
apprentice yet being unable to answer his question.
She explained, “He asked me the real purpose of wanting to be his apprentice. I said it was to solve the problems in my project, but he wasn’t satisfied.”
Dawn listened, then pondered briefly before pointing toward the flowerbeds she carefully tended outside the window. “Look at these flowers. I prune the extra branches not to make them grow the way I want, but to help them shed their burdens so they can grow taller and reach the sky they themselves desire.”
Her voice flowed gently, like a soft breeze drifting through time.
The words struck Rosalie like a bolt of lightning, clearing the fog from her mind. She had always thought that apprenticing under a mentor was to solve the problems with Firmament System, but she had been
mistaken.
Apprenticeship was never about fixing the challenges already known-it was about standing on the shoulders of giants to explore the unknown horizons she had never dared to imagine.
Rosalie felt her eyes sting. “Ms. Ortega, I understand now,” she whispered.
Dawn waved her hand dismissively, her cheerful demeanor returning. “I’m just an old woman. What do I know? Nonsense, all of it.”
Rosalie stayed until the sun dipped toward the west before leaving the nursing home with Ursula.

Their car didn’t return to the apartment but drove straight to Manfred’s private residence.
The moment she entered his study, Manfred let out a sharp hum. “Back again? Figured it out?”
Rosalie stood straight, her eyes clear and steady as she met his gaze. “Professor Fisher, I want to be your apprentice to stand on the shoulders of giants and explore the unknown horizons.”
Manfred’s fingers paused over the keyboard. He looked up, his scrutinizing gaze lingering on Rosalie’s face for a full 30 seconds before a sudden smile curved his lips.
“Not bad. You’ve got some potential,” he said, reaching into a drawer and pulling out a small, ornate box. He opened it to reveal a chip that glimmered with a deep, bluish light.
Rosalie recognized it immediately as a quantum chip-each of her senior peers had one, all engraved with their names, a symbol of their status as Manfred’s apprentices.
Manfred held the bluish chip between his fingers, turning it slowly. “Do you know where this came from?”
he asked.
Rosalie’s eyes were drawn to the blue glow, and she almost blurted out, “It’s from the first generation of quantum computing prototypes, discarded due to algorithmic redundancy.
“Each one carries a unique serial number, a reminder that while computing power is limited, human imagination knows no bounds.”
Manfred raised an eyebrow, a flicker of approval in his eyes. Then, he flipped the chip over. On the bluish back, engraved with laser precision, were two words-Rosalie Ashford.
Rosalie’s eyes widened sharply. Her name… had already been etched onto it.
