Chapter 18 Lucian, You Owe Me!
Rosalie raised an eyebrow. She hadn’t expected William to call Abigail right away.
“Mom, give it to him. I don’t need it anymore.”
William’s little trick was laughably obvious. If she couldn’t see through that after two lives, she might as well have learned nothing.
If he found out she had already registered a marriage with a firefighter, he would try every angle to go after Julian.
Better to let the board meeting settle everything first. By then, it would be too late for him to meddle.
Rosalie swung by the technical department to grab a few things that mattered to her.
As her elevator doors slid open, the doors across the hall did too. A tall, stern-faced man stepped out, carrying an insulated food container.
She pretended not to see him and started walking..
“Rosalie.” Lucian’s voice was as distant as ever.
In a few long strides, he moved in front of her and blocked her path.
She stopped and frowned. “What do you want?”
“You destroyed the chip in that figure remotely yesterday?” Lucian studied her, then let out a helpless little laugh. “You don’t have to throw a tantrum with me.”
Rosalie let out a cold, mocking smile. “It was mine. I can handle it however I want.”
He frowned. “Melia liked it. I didn’t think you’d be that petty.”
“Oh? How thoughtful of you. You passed along the gift I gave you. What? Can’t you even pick out something yourself for your beloved?”
The air tightened.
Lucian looked at Rosalie for a long moment, something complicated in his eyes, then said quietly, “Melia barely survived. We both owe her. Since this is where we are, can’t you at least try to get along with her?”
The absurdity of it almost made Rosalie laugh.
She did laugh, and the bite in it cut clean. “We? There’s no ‘we.’ I don’t owe anyone a thing! If we’re tallying debts, Lucian, you owe me!”
Seven years of swallowing bitter pills, chasing old wives’ remedies, and lying on operating tables while he looked the other way.
If he had told her once that his heart was elsewhere, she wouldn’t have gambled her life to give him a

child.
The thought soured her throat. Heat stung her eyes. She turned to go, wanting distance more than anything.
Just then, his hand clamped around her arm. “I’m sorry, but I won’t fail her again.”
Rosalie yanked free and let out a cold laugh.
2/2
“How deep your love must be. Let me congratulate you in advance. May your love be ironclad, may you have babies, and may you grow old together!
“From here on out, chase your grand romance. I won’t be in your way. Do me one favor in return. Stay out of my life! I don’t need the eyesore!”
Lucian’s face darkened, and his gaze locked on hers. “Do you mean that?”
Rosalie didn’t waste another look. She turned and strode off.
What did truth matter between them now?
“Ms. Ashford! Ms. Ashford!” A young engineer rushed up, breathless.
“The Firmament System data is still glitching! Every minute we’re down is costing the group hundreds of thousands! Mr. Miller needs you in the war room now!”
Rosalie nodded. “I’m coming.”
Lucian fell in step a few paces behind.
