Chapter 15 She’s Busy

The next few days fell over a weekend, and Rosalie’s inheritance paperwork still didn’t go through.

Word spread, though, that Lucian and Camelia hadn’t held a wedding after all. That multimillion-dollar spectacle they had planned went straight down the drain.

For a moment, the news surprised Rosalie. Then, it clicked.

Lucian loved Camelia deeply. He was probably saving himself for a bigger, grander ceremony just for the two of them. He would never give her a wedding that was meant for someone else.

Early Monday morning, a text buzzed in from Julian.

“There’s a family social at the fire station this weekend. Want to come?”

Rosalie called him instead of typing back.

Julian picked up at once. There was a lot of noise in the background, like a room full of people.

“Mr. Yarwood, I saw your message,” she said.

“Okay.” His voice was as steady as ever.

“I’m slammed this week. If it isn’t mandatory, I’ll pass for now.”

Silence held for a few seconds.

“Got it,” Julian said, unreadable as always. “Take care of your stuff.”

“Will do.”

She hung up, and the corner of her mouth lifted.

Dealing with a smart man made life easy.

At the same time, the breakfast room at Harborview Fire Department was buzzing.

A bunch of firefighters fresh off morning drills crowded around their usually stone-faced captain.

“Captain Yarwood, your wife’s coming to the family event this weekend, right?”

“Come on, introduce us. We’re dying of curiosity over here!”

“Was that her on the phone just now? What did she say? Is she in?”

They nearly spat out their coffee at roll call when they saw Julian’s status change from “single” to ”

married.”

Julian married last week! The news hit harder than a three-alarm fire.

Chapter 15 Dhey thiny

The station hosted a family social once a month, and this month’s fell on Saturday, so everyone was itching to meet Rosalie.

Julian looked up from his tray, and the room went instantly quiet. Even the woman serving scrambled

eggs behind the counter tilted an ear.

“Well?” Crispin asked, unable to help himself. “Is she coming?”

713

Julian picked up a piece of bread, took his time with a bite, and finally said, “She’s busy this week. She’s

not coming.”

A collective sigh ran through the room.

“See?” one of the younger men muttered, scratching his head. “I told you. She’s probably a big deal.”

“Totally! Don’t read into it, Captain Yarwood. A woman with a career is awesome!”

They relaxed when they saw Julian wasn’t bothered, though several of them still felt bad for him.

He was newly married, but his wife was already too busy for him. It felt like nothing had changed.

Not that any of them were foolish enough to say that to Julian’s face.

Rosalie really was swamped. No sooner had she ended the call than Nathan was on the line.

“Ms. Ashford, Stellar Group is holding up the probate on your management rights.”

Rosalie’s brow furrowed. “On what grounds?”

“Stellar’s legal team claims you haven’t produced measurable economic results for the company in the past six months. HR lists you as having effectively resigned, so they argue you don’t meet the conditions for full inheritance.”

Rosalie almost laughed. The last half year, she had stepped back from her director role to plan a wedding and finish her thesis, taking a nominal deputy title.

Yet, the division’s most profitable projects were the very ones she had led and delivered right before that.

Now, because she hadn’t filed fresh wins during those months, they wanted to wipe out everything she had built?

She swallowed the anger rising in her chest, grabbed her keys, and drove straight to Stellar Group’s headquarters.

When the elevator doors slid open, she stepped out and froze.
