tall man leaned against the car, smoking a cigarette; the bluish–white smoke obscured his face.
His deep eyes glanced at Reynald’s coat I was wearing, keeping his thoughts to himself.
Reynald glanced at me unconsciously and then turned his gaze to Jaxson.“Mr. Hamilton, were you waiting for someone?”
Waiting for someone…
Caroline was no longer at the hospital; who was he waiting for? Did he wait for me?
When the idea popped into my mind, I thought it was absurd!
Jaxson looked up and exhaled a puff of smoke, threw the cigarette butt under his foot and crushed it, and cast a sinister glance at Reynald.“Since when did Mr. Steward develop such a habit of meddling in others‘ affairs?”
Meddling in others‘ affairs…
Four words hit my heart hard; my lips slightly paled.
So… had he really authorized Caroline’s scheme against me tonight?
Thinking of this, my blood ran cold, and my hands and feet turned icy.
Reynald noticed my strangeness, squinted his eyes, turned to Jaxson, and said, “Since when is playing the hero considered meddling?”
Jaxson furrowed his brow.
Reynald was about to say something when I suddenly grabbed his arm, sounding tired and breathless.“Reynald, could you please take me back home?” Was I trembling?
Reynald looked at Jaxson, didn’t say anything, and complied with my request.
Just as he was about to leave, Jaxson spoke in a cold voice.“Charlotte.”
I froze for a moment. In front of others, he never called me by name; he avoided letting people know about our relationship. What does he mean now?
I didn’t look back; I was about to take a step forward.
The voice behind me sank.“Didn’t you hear me calling you?”
My palm, twisted by me, seeped a trace of blood from the gauze.
I suppressed the pain in my heart and numbly turned to look at him.“Mr. Hamilton, is there something wrong?”
“Come over.”
