Chapter 8

Joseph kicked her hard, sending her sprawling.

He grabbed a fistful of her hair and yanked her head back. “Even now, you’re still trying to lie to me? Look closely!”

He played another video-this one showing the full, unedited footage of Katherine giving the order her- self.

Katherine’s heart plummeted.

Her eyes darted quickly, desperate for an excuse, until they landed on her swollen belly.

Her eyes grew red as she put on a pitiful, delicate expression.

“Joe, for the baby’s sake, forgive me this time. I swear, I’ll never do it again… I’ll even give you another daughter, okay?”

She rubbed her curving body against his leg, trying to awaken his desire. But he only lifted his foot and kicked her away, harder this time.

There was no trace of tenderness left in Joseph’s eyes.

“Your doctor told me the child you’re carrying is already two months along. Back then, I hadn’t even touched you. You think you’re worthy of giving me a child?”

Katherine’s body trembled uncontrollably. Whatever shred of hope she’d been clinging to vanished completely.

She crawled toward him, her voice choked with sobs. “Just give me one more chance. I’ll make it right!”

Joseph gripped her chin hard, a dangerous gleam flashing in his eyes. “Really?”

Thinking she still had a way out, she nodded frantically.

His lips curved into a deceptively gentle smile as he said to the men behind him, “Take her away. Drive 500 nails into her body! Every single one must go in!”

The words stunned her. She opened her mouth to plead, but a bodyguard clamped a hand over it.

Tears streaked her face as she was dragged away like a rag doll.

Halfway down the hall, a pale yellow liquid trickled down her legs.

“Mmm! Mmm!”

Her muffled, hysterical cries faded into silence, and the hallway fell deathly still again.

When Joseph came to find me, I had just stepped out of the asylum.

Since being thrown in there, I had been no different from the truly insane. I either crouched in the yard, replaying every memory of Joyce or plotting exactly how I would make Joseph and Katherine pay once I got out.

That day, Joseph’s greatest rival in the business world, Christopher Figueroa, came to me.

He asked if I would join him in destroying Joseph.

I didn’t hesitate for a second before agreeing.

So when Joseph showed up, I didn’t scream or curse like before.

I simply told him calmly, “It’s time to bury Joyce…”

The moment the words left my mouth, his eyes reddened, tears breaking free and sliding down his

cheeks.

He clutched my hand, apologizing over and over, even using my own hand to slap his face.

“Samantha, it’s my fault. I killed Joyce!”

His lips twisted wide, his voice cracking with grief.

If I hadn’t lived through Joyce’s brutal death, I might have been moved by his display.

But I knew better. They were crocodile tears and nothing more.

We said nothing as we brought the lower half of Joyce’s body to the crematorium.

I watched the worker press the button, the black smoke curling upward from the furnace door.

I didn’t shed a single tear.

I only whispered silently in my heart, “Joyce… in your next life, may you be born into a good family and live well…”

On the day her ashes were laid to rest, Joseph knelt before the headstone, nearly collapsing from grief.
