Chapter

Richard then came rushing out of the break room.

“Emma, are you out of your damn mind?!”

“Doctors aren’t miracle workers! Your mom died and now you’re gonna blame me for it?!”

I replied calmly:

“I’m not blaming you. I just don’t want to be married to you anymore.”

Richard’s jaw clenched as he forced down his anger.

“Lily and I did everything we could for your mother’s surgery. Look, I get that you’re upset right now, but don’t joke around about divorce, okay?”

Lily suddenly gasped like she’d just figured something out, pointing at herself with wide eyes.

“Emma, you’re not mad at Dr. Richard… are you mad at me?”

Her eyes instantly filled with tears as she crouched down, covering her face.

“It’s all my fault. I couldn’t save her. This is on me.”

“Emma, if you want to yell at someone or hit someone, take it out on me! Don’t divorce Dr. Richard he didn’t do anything wrong!”

Richard quickly pulled her up, furious.

“After something this traumatic, Lily’s already dealing with enough guilt. Why are you trying to make her feel worse?”

“You want to divorce me? Emma, get a reality check! Your mom’s dead, your dad’s getting old – you think you’re still daddy’s little princess with mommy and daddy to back you up?!”

“You better figure out real quick that I’m the only person you can count on now! Not your half–dead parents!”

just stared at him quietly.

His ugly true nature reflected in my eyes.

“Richard, there it is. Your real feelings finally coming out.”

“You’ve been after my parents‘ money this whole time, mooching off them for years, and now your pathetic little ego is showing.”

“Looking at you right now… I’m honestly disgusted.”

Richard’s face turned bright red at one moment.

Lily looked completely confusedher eyes darting back and forth between us.

“Fine! Let’s get divorced then!”

Richard wiped his face roughly, his eyes bloodshot.

“Emma, you’ve got money, you’re so fucking special!”

“You better pray your dad never gets sick, because when you come crawling back begging me to save his ass, I won’t even answer the door!”

Chapter 3

Before leaving, he glanced at his mother’s mangled remains.

He called the crematorium with complete disdain.

“Just a pile of useless meat. Come pick it up – stop wasting valuable hospital space!”

I had wanted to give Richard one last chance to see his mother.

Clearly that was unnecessary.

A few hours later, the crematorium called me.

I picked up the ashes, set up a memorial service for his mother, and notified Richard and the family.

We’d been in–laws once – this was the least I could do.

After working all day to arrange everything, I walked back into the memorial hall and couldn’t believe my eyes.

His mother’s portrait was splattered with what looked like pig’s blood, with a huge X slashed across her face.

Black marks ran from her forehead down to her chin, cutting right across her eyes.

And the table that should have held offerings was covered with beer cans and potato chip bags. The solemn prayer music had been replaced with creepy, discordant sounds.

“See? Now this has some personality!”

Lily laughed as she kicked the urn aside, scattering ashes all over the floor.

She was scribbling all over the memorial tablet with a paint marker.

I stood there in shock, feeling like something was stuck in

my

throat.

Just then, the memorial hall doors swung open.

Richard strode in, his eyes sweeping over the chaos without a trace of anger.

There was even a hint of cold amusement in his expression.

Lily winked at him and bounced over like she was looking for praise.

“Dr. Richard, you said funerals shouldn’t be so depressing! Didn’t I do a super creative job with the decorations?”

Richard walked up to the portrait, staring at the face that had been slashed beyond recognition.

He didn’t recognize his own mother’s picture at all.

He casually straightened the frame and nodded approvingly.

His voice was steady and clear:

“Nice job. What’s the point of having everyone standing around crying?”

“You gotta liven things up, make it a celebration. At least then the dead person didn’t die for nothing.”
