Chapter 8

Samuel did not die.

Once he was rescued from the water, he appeared to have lost his sanity, rejecting food and drink for several days. Mandy remained by his side constantly, exhausting herself with worry–she aged visibly in a short period.

Another critical condition notice was issued, and after another close brush with death, Samuel finally regained some clarity. However, upon waking, the first thing he did was make arrangements to head west, determined to withdraw completely into a monastery.

Everyone tried to persuade him not to go through with it. Mandy burst into tears.

“You told me you waited three years for me. Now that I’m here, why are you leaving?

“Do I even matter to you at all?”

Maria pleaded with him sincerely, “Samuel, when you first mentioned wanting to live a monastic life while still in the world, I thought of it as a fleeting whim. Now that both you and your brother are married, can’t you put an end to this nonsense?”

However, Samuel ignored everyone. He isolated himself in his room, dedicating all his time to praying before a statue of Jesus Christ.

Out of options and in despair, Maria approached me.

“Amanda, sweetheart, please speak with Samuel. You two have been

However, I shook my head. The bond from our childhood friendship had long been cast aside by him. Those humiliations and pains–I couldn’t just forget them.

It wasn’t until Samuel stayed in his room for three days without eating or drinking, and Maria almost begged me, that I finally approached his door.

“Samuel, what are you playing at? Do you have to disrupt everyone’s peace?” I frowned and knocked twice on the door.

There was a time when “What are you playing at?” was Samuel’s frequent question to me. I never imagined I’d be the one asking him that.

The air remained still for what felt like ages until the door creaked open, unveiling a weary face.

Though only a few days had passed since our last encounter, his face seemed to have aged, and his previously cold and aloof expression had disappeared. His eyes were red and puffy, and a powerful aroma

surrounded him–so intense that I instinctively stepped back, grimacing and shielding my nose.

Observing my response, Samuel’s body shook. He looked down in despair and retreated slightly, partially concealing himself behind the door.

“Why are you here? If you’re trying to convince me, don’t bother,” he said in a weary, raspy voice.

“I’m not here to convince you. I just don’t want you to die in there.”

Hearing this, a glimmer of hope appeared in Samuel’s eyes, but it quickly faded away.

“I’m scared of rumors and being unjustly accused of something I didn’t do. That would be unfortunate.” I raised my head, maintaining a balanced demeanor. “If you’re wanted to die, please keep your distance. I don’t want to have anything to do with you.”

My harsh words struck Samuel hard. He was left speechless for quite a while. As my patience wore thin and I was about to walk away, he finally found his voice.

“No, I won’t drag you down.”

He managed a sorrowful smile, pulling out a small marble statue shaped like me, and handed it to me.

“I carved this for you. I hope… you have a happy marriage…”

His words came with much effort, yet I had no intention of accepting his gesture.

“Thank you, but the gift isn’t necessary.”

“I think it’s repulsive.”

I placed a voice recorder down and turned to walk away.

Samuel picked up the voice recorder behind me and pressed play. As soon as the first word echoed out, his face turned ghostly pale. The longer he listened, the more his sense of hopelessness increased.

“The Gibson family and the Harlan family have a childhood engagement. All I’m doing is marrying a daughter from the Harlan family.

“Marrying her is no better than marrying a pig. She’s unbearably clingy. Maybe locking her up after we’re wed will finally silence her.”

Ultimately, he released a bitter chuckle, consumed by regret. Under the watchful eyes of the statue of Jesus Christ, his whispered “I’m sorry” faded into nothingness. Unfortunately, no one would respond.

On a typical evening, Samuel quietly left the house. Unable to bear the loss, Mandy decided to find him on her own. In her haste, however, she lost control of her car and crashed.

In her last moments, she looked at me with eyes full of hatred, holding me responsible for destroying her life. But hadn’t I also blamed her?

At that moment, I expressed my gratitude to her for letting me see the truth.

Suddenly, a comforting, large hand slipped into my tightly closed fist. I traced it back to Theo’s comforting eyes, and we exchanged smiles.

From this day forward, and in all the lives that follow, I knew that someone would always walk with me.
