Chapter 103 Setting Up a Date
Evelyn’s eyes stayed fixed, sharp and steady. ‘
That dark navy dot–she knew it well. It was the charm she had sewn for Philip.
Her heart felt warm knowing he carried it, but she couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
Who sticks a charm on their waistband like that? So careless.

“Dr. Schmidt, what are you staring at?” Myrtle finally got over her earlier scare and leaned over curiously.
Evelyn pulled her gaze back. “Nothing. Just looking around.”
But Myrtle had sharp eyes. She spotted the group of soldiers running drills. “Hey! Dr. Schmidt, is your boyfriend in there? Look!”
“It’s too far. They all look the same from here. I can’t tell who’s who,” Evelyn said, waving it off with a playful little smile. “Besides, why stare now? I’ll see him in person later.”
Myrtle, not satisfied, leaned on the window herself. “I wonder if Perry’s in there.”
Perry Burton was the soldier she had been gushing about earlier.
It was obvious Myrtle had a tiny crush.
“Why don’t you say hi to everyone? Then later, you’ll be the one to do Perry’s exam,” Evelyn teased, her eyes glinting.
Myrtle’s face turned pink. “W–who’s doing his exam? Not me. I’m busy enough already. Don’t throw him at me.”
“Okay, I’ll take Perry,” Evelyn said, pretending to mean it.
That made Myrtle panic. “No! Dr. Schmidt, you’re busy too, and you still have to see your boyfriend… Wait, you already have a boyfriend! How can you-”
Before she could finish, Evelyn cut her off. “What does checking vitals have to do with boyfriends?”
That was when Myrtle realized–she had been tricked.
Her face burned red, and she had no words left.
“It’ll be our little secret. I’ll just say you helped Perry last time and are following up. No one will

suspect a thing.”
And sure enough, nobody did. Everyone simply agreed to send Perry to Myrtle for his checkup.

Rowan even praised her. “Myrtle, well done. Caring about your patient like that is excellent.”
Getting praised, even for selfish reasons, made Myrtle blush harder. She lowered her head, too embarrassed to answer.
By then, the bus had already passed the three checkpoints and entered the unit.
The commander, Rob Thorson, came out to greet them himself.
Rob was quick and no–nonsense.
He cleared a room, set up tables and chairs for blood tests and blood pressure, then ordered someone to call in the recruits to line up by platoon.
He turned to Rowan. “Dr. Cook, I’ll leave this to you and your team. These rookies just finished basic training. We need to check for any health problems before we assign them.”
It wasn’t Rowan’s first rodeo. He knew the procedure well.
He nodded calmly. “Don’t worry. We’re ready. Send them in.”
The recruits lined up one by one for their exams.
Evelyn didn’t expect the first one to be Quade.
The moment he saw her, he nearly jumped off the stool. “Evelyn! What are you doing here? Oh, right–you’re here for the physicals.”
“Stand still,” Evelyn said with a tired smile. “You’re so excited, your blood pressure will shoot up. Calm down.”
“Ah, you’re right,” Quade said sheepishly, stepping aside to let her check the next soldier.
But he couldn’t stop himself from bragging. “Hey, Jim, do you know who this is? This is our Boss’s girlfriend, Evelyn.”
Jim Haynes jumped right in. “Hi, Evelyn.”
Evelyn wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead. Quade… seriously?
“By the way, Evelyn, does the Boss know you’re here?” Quade asked.

Before she could reply, Jim spoke. “Probably not. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be heading out with the supply team right now.”
Supply team? He left?
Evelyn froze. “But I just saw him in morning drills.”
Jim nodded. “He planned to head out right after drills. When we arrived, he looked ready to leave with the kitchen crew.”
Before she could react, Quade bolted like lightning toward the door.
He yelled back, “Evelyn, wait! Even if I have to chase the truck, I’ll bring the Boss back for you!”
In a blink, he was gone.
Evelyn sighed helplessly, though her heart felt touched.
Quade really was helping her with Philip.
“Alright, let’s keep going. After blood pressure, we’ll do the blood tests,” Evelyn said, focusing again and grabbing the equipment.
But Jim waved his hand quickly. “I’ll wait a bit. Blood makes me dizzy. Check the next person first.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
A soldier scared of blood? On a battlefield, bleeding is normal–how could someone like that survive training?
He shouldn’t even be here.
While she was still thinking it over, Jim stepped aside, and the next recruit rolled up his sleeves, showing a strong, muscular arm. “Check me.”
The deep, familiar voice made Evelyn’s heart jolt.
She looked up straight into Philip’s dark, steady eyes.
“W–weren’t you supposed to be moving supplies?”
It had been less than two minutes since Quade ran off–way too fast for Philip to be back.
Philip smirked. “That was the plan. But Quade was getting annoying, so I sent him on a wild chase. This way, he won’t bother you.”

With a wave of his hand, he ordered the other recruits behind him to go to different doctors and nurses.
This left him alone with Evelyn.
In a room that was crowded a moment ago, there was suddenly just the two of them when all the other doctors and nurses‘ stations had long lines.
It was clear–Philip’s friends were sacrificing themselves to help him get some private time with her.
Meanwhile, the busy nurses and doctors couldn’t help sneaking glances.
They were jealous. Why don’t we have a soldier boyfriend?
They’re having their own little date under the cover of a physical exam!
As if nothing was strange, Philip said calmly, “You can start with the blood test.”
