Chapter 34

Janet’s Point of View

“Hopefully, Ms. Janet,” Dr. Jessica assured me.

“That’s wonderful news. I’m coming right away to see her.”

As the call ended, I hugged the phone to my chest, unable to contain my smile. My mom is waking up.

I Jumped out of bed, threw on clothes, and rushed out the door without bothering about breakfast.

The drive felt quicker than usual-maybe because the road was clearer, or maybe because my heart was racing ahead of me. I practically flew out of the cab and hurried straight to the receptionist, asking for Dr. Jessica. The nurse directed me toward her office, but before I could reach it, I met her in the hallway.

“Ms. Janet, you’re here already,” she said, surprised, but smiling warmly.

“I came as soon as I could,” I answered, unable to hide the joy swelling in my chest. “Can I see her now?”

“Of course-right this way.”

“Mrs Redmond is still sleeping,” Dr. Jessica explained as we walked to her room, “but she’s showing significant signs of awakening.”

When I saw her, my heart lifted. “Her hands are moving, and her legs too,” I observed. “Even while she’s lying there, she looks more alive than before.”

“Exactly,” the doctor smiled. “Her brain activity has increased dramatically since the new treatment began.”

I felt relief wash over me. Finally, my mother was becoming okay, and she would be fine. I couldn’t help but feel relieved and happy.

“Don’t worry,” Dr. Jessica said. “This shows she’s responding excellently to the treatment. I believe she’ll awaken within the next few days.”

After visiting my mother, I asked a nurse for directions to the OBGYN department. I had another important reason for being at the hospital —one I had been both anxious and nervous about. After the test confirmed I was pregnant, I had never had time to do a real checkup on my baby.

The nurse showed me to the department. Everything was clean and welcoming, though it was my first time in this department.

“You’ll be seeing Dr. Helen,” the nurse said. “She’s wonderful with expectant mothers.”

I registered for my checkup, and Dr. Helen’s assistant asked me to wait in the examination room.

When Dr. Helen came in, she was a warm woman in her fifties with kind eyes. “Hello, you must be Janet. ” She asked as I nodded “I understand this is your first prenatal visit?”

“Yes,” I said nervously. “I just found out I’m pregnant a few weeks ago.”

“That’s perfectly fine. Let’s take good care of you and your baby.” She helped me onto the examination table. “When was your last menstrual period?”

I told her the date, and she calculated. “That puts you at about eight weeks along. Let’s do an ultrasound to see how your little one is doing.”

The checkup was really amazing. Dr. Helen was so kind and gentle. “This is your baby,” she said, pointing to the screen. “See that little flutter? That’s the heartbeat.”

I started crying with joy. “Really? That’s my baby?” I said as I saw my baby in the screen moving.

“Yes, and everything looks perfect,” Dr. Helen said warmly. “Your baby is developing exactly as it should.”

The rest of the check was really amazing, nothing to what I thought it would be. Dr Helen too was helpful, She was very accommodating and friendly, explaining everything clearly. “The more joy and less stress you have, the better for your baby. Children bring such happiness to our lives.” She added.

She turned to the side and reached into a container, pulling out a small bottle.

“This is prenatal folic acid. Make sure you take one every morning,” she explained, placing the bottle in my hand. “It supports your baby’s early brain and spinal cord development, and it also helps the placenta grow properly.”

“You can always come back for more when this runs out. Just don’t forget to take it daily,” she added with a reassuring smile.

“Is there anything else I need to know?” I asked quietly. It was my first pregnancy, and I had never been to a checkup before. I needed to be certain my baby would be alright.

“Well, nothing too overwhelming,” Dr. Helen replied kindly. “Eat a healthy, balanced diet, and keep taking your prenatal vitamins. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and too much caffeine-those can all harm the baby. And make sure you get plenty of rest. Rest is essential for both you and your little one; it helps the baby grow well. Finally, don’t miss your checkups-come every four weeks so we can monitor your progress.”

Her words settled over me like a gentle blanket. I couldn’t help but smile as I rubbed my hand over my stomach. Hang tight, little one. Mom will take good care of you.

“Thank you so much for everything,” I said, shaking her hand as I stepped down from the examination table.

“It’s my pleasure, dear. You’re going to be a wonderful mother.”

I walked to the door feeling like I was floating on air. As soon as I stepped out of the department, the person standing right in front of me was the last person I ever wanted to meet-Mrs. Caroline Thayer. Rowan’s mother.
