Chapter 91 Spending So Much Money on Me 

Sonya completely trusted Evelyn’s medical expertise.

On a big level, there was Jeremy–paralyzed for years–who could now stand, walk, even run again thanks to Evelyn’s care. Neighbors called it a miracle. 

On a smaller level, there was Charles, who used to wake up over and over at night with sweats and couldn’t sleep. Now he slept soundly till morning. 

These things gave Sonya comfort and hope. 

“Dr. Schmidt, I believe in you!” Sonya said seriously, nodding. 

Then she asked, “So what should I do now?” 

“Don’t rush,” Evelyn replied. “Here’s the plan–pick a day to come to Brookhaven Hospital. I’ll give you a full checkup, then we’ll talk about treatment.” 

Sonya realized she had been too eager. 

She gave a shy smile. “I just really want a baby. Sorry for acting so worked up.” 

But Evelyn had always taken patients seriously. 

After all, every patient deserved respect. 

They decided Sonya would come on Thursday, her day off, for the exam. 

By then, the dishes were all washed. 

When they walked out, Rowan was already back without them noticing. 

Evelyn introduced him. “Mrs. Cannon, this is my mentor, Dr. Rowan Cook.” 

“Hello, Dr. Cook,” Sonya greeted right away. 

Rowan, distracted, only gave a few half–hearted replies before turning to Evelyn. “It’s late. We should go.” 

Jeremy looked a little disappointed. “Already? We haven’t even finished talking.” 

Evelyn explained quickly, “He/worries about the patients. We’ll come again on another day off.” 

That sounded reasonable, so Jeremy didn’t insist. 

He walked them to the gate, clearly reluctant to let them go. 

Once they reached the street, Evelyn flagged down a cab.

She had brought Rowan along to keep his mind busy, but instead, they ended up running into Harriet and learned Tom was also in the city. 

Judging by Rowan’s expression, he wasn’t in the best mood. 

Whether he had seen Tom or not was clear. 

Evelyn had planned to go to the Schmidt Residence afterward, but leaving Rowan alone while she went felt wrong. 

So they took a cab back to the hospital. Right outside the dorm building, they ran into Yvonne, who had come to see Evelyn. 

Evelyn raised a brow. Looks like fate really likes playing tricks on me. 

Even without my going home, my mother showed up. 

“Evelyn!” Yvonne called. She spotted her, waved happily, and ran over with a bunch of packages in her arms. 

Rowan, feeling gloomy, didn’t want strangers to see his mood. 

“I’ll head back to the office. Spend some time with your mom,” he said, then walked away. 

Yvonne reached Evelyn and lifted the packages to eye level. “You’ve been gone for two weeks. Your dad and I missed you so much. I brought things for you and wanted to check how you’re doing.” 

“I’m fine. I planned to go home today, but things came up,” Evelyn said honestly. 

“Fine? You’ve lost weight!” Yvonne scolded gently. “Come on. Let’s go up to your dorm. I brought food–it’ll spoil if it’s not put away.” 

Evelyn carried two of the heavy bags herself. Her hands hurt from the weight. 

Clearly, Yvonne had packed a lot. 

As they climbed the stairs, Yvonne asked, “I came earlier, but your door was locked. Isn’t this dorm supposed to be safe? Why lock it?” 

“Someone could sneak things in Not long ago, someone tried to frame me for stealing a watch, Evelyn explained quietly. 

“What?” Yvonne froze, eyes wide. “And then? What happened?” 

“I explained it clearly. But after that, better to keep the door locked, right?” 

Yvonne’s face flickered with disappointment at the answer.

It passed quickly, and she nodded calmly. “Yes, you’re right. But the person who framed you is horrible, doing something so awful.” 

“Yeah, people who do bad things are really horrible,” Evelyn said simply. 

Yvonne felt there might be more to those words, but since she couldn’t read Evelyn’s face, she told herself she was overthinking and kept walking. 

Once inside, Yvonne unpacked everything onto the table, showing Evelyn each thing. 

“I made all this this morning. Eat it soon–the weather’s hot, it could spoil. If you can’t finish, share with your colleagues, keep your relationships warm.” 

She looked so thoughtful, just like a kind mother. 

Evelyn accepted everything politely. 

The room went quiet, the air a little tense. 

At last, Yvonne asked, “Those emerald bracelets–why don’t you wear them?” 

“I can’t wear jewelry at work–it gets in the way,” Evelyn answered. 

“Well, you can wear them when you’re off.” 

Yvonne realized she had sounded a bit pushy, almost scheming. She quickly softened her 

tone. 

“I just mean… It looks nice on you. Doesn’t harm to dress up a little, even when you’re at work. Makes you look more presentable.” 

Evelyn smiled, touched. “Thanks for thinking of me. I’ll wear them when I have time.” 

“Yeah, just be careful not to scratch them. They’re precious, passed down from your grandfather,” Yvonne added gently, trying to soften her earlier tone. 

After Evelyn ate the food on the table, Yvonne pulled out more items: a bag of laundry powder and a sturdy short–sleeved shirt. 

“These are from colleagues in a coastal city. They’re imported and high–quality. The laundry powder cleans better than laundry soap bars–perfect for your white coats.” 

She presented everything like a treasure. 

Evelyn looked at her and asked softly, “Don’t you feel sorry for your bank account, spending so much money on me?”
