Evelyn was in the middle of enjoying the praises when she heard a key turning in the lock.
Jeremy’s cars were sharp. He chuckled to Rowan, “That’s my son, for sure. He kept saying that if Dr. Schmidt ever came, he’d have to cook a proper meal. Look at him–he didn’t even stay at work and came home this early.”
“My apprentice is just that popular,” Rowan said proudly, tilting his head back like a king.
Right then, the door opened.
As expected, Charles stood there, arms full of groceries, struggling under the weight.
Evelyn, being closest, stepped forward to help. But then she froze–because someone else was standing behind Charles. For a few seconds, she just stared in shock.
“Evelyn, what are you doing here?” a voice asked sharply.
Evelyn frowned. “Dr. Davis? Weren’t you supposed to be volunteering at the mountain hospital? Why are you back?”
“I’m on leave, can’t I be?” Harriet snapped.
Then she glanced at Charles. “Mr. Charles, so you came home early to buy groceries–not for me, but for Evelyn?”
Charles, sensing the tension, quickly stepped aside. “You’re all guests here, so of course I’ll cook for everyone. Come on in and sit down. Dad, you entertain the guests, I’ll handle the kitchen.”
Jeremy nodded and waved Harriet over. “Sit here. I’ll pour you coffee.”
“No need, Mr. Jeremy. You sit. I’m fine,” Harriet said quickly, waving him off.
This obedient version of Harriet made Evelyn feel like she’d stepped into the wrong drama.
Impossible. Could a short trip to a mountain hospital really change Harriet this much?
But thinking about the sharp tone Harriet had used earlier, Evelyn doubted it.
Either way, Harriet seemed particularly strange today.
The four of them sat in the living room, chatting.
Rowan, not fond of Harriet, barely raised an eyelid. “You’re on leave? Where’s your mentor? How could he just let you run around alone? Isn’t he worried you’ll mess up?”
“Dr. Cook, you’re funny. How could I cause trouble? I just came back with Dr. Hayward to pick

up some medical supplies. Our tire burst, so Dr. Hayward stayed behind to fix it. I went walking, stopped by the newspaper office, and came back with Mr. Charles.”
Harriet explained in way too much detail, spilling everything like water.
The more she said, the less believable it sounded.
Evelyn didn’t react. She just kept her face calm and continued chatting.

At the Cannons, Harriet acted like a completely different person–quiet, polite, and well- behaved.
Jeremy, not knowing her past behavior, even praised her.
But Rowan, who knew better, only chuckled to himself.
Soon, the smell of food wafted out of the kitchen.
Harriet couldn’t sit still. “I see Mr. Charles is busy in there alone. I can cook too–let me help.”
“No, no, I’ll handle it. You’re a guest. You shouldn’t be helping out,” Jeremy said.
But Harriet was already walking into the kitchen.
Jeremy sat back down. “Dr. Davis is really enthusiastic.”
“Hmph, if she’d always been this eager, things would be perfect,” Rowan muttered.
Then he stood up suddenly. “That brat might be lying. Maybe she snuck out. I should check the repair shop–if she causes trouble, Twix will be blamed.”
“But the food’s almost ready,” Jeremy said quickly. “Why not eat first? Dr. Davis is already here.”
“Let him go, Jeremy,” Evelyn said, knowing what Rowan was really thinking. “He’s always restless anyway, I’ll save some fried chicken for him later–it’s the same thing.”
Seeing as he couldn’t win, Jeremy sighed and walked to the door to see Rowan out.
Then he clicked his tongue regretfully. “Such a pity. Fried chicken tastes best hot, I finally found someone I could really chat with, and now he’s gone.”
Evelyn nearly choked. So by ‘chatted really well,‘ he means Dr. Cook?
She definitely didn’t agree.
“Next holiday, I’ll bring Dr. Cook to visit again, alright?” Evelyn promised.
That finally cheered Jeremy up, and the two of them sat watching TV and chatting while the kitchen clattered with noise before the dishes were slowly brought out, one by one.

After looking at the time, Jeremy went into the kitchen to help with the fried chicken, leaving Evelyn alone in the living room.
By noon, all the dishes were laid out on the table.
Everyone got ready to eat.
Harriet was tasked with serving everyone.
But Jeremy brought out five plates.
Harriet frowned. “Dr. Cook already left. Why five? Don’t worry. His portion’s in the kitchen.”
Jeremy shook his head. “It’s not for him. Someone else isn’t here
“Someone else?” Harriet blinked and looked at Charles.
Before he could answer, the door swung open.
yet.”
A woman in a black knit dress walked in. Her short, neat hair made her look sharp and professional, but her eyes were warm and inviting.
She called out right away, “Honey, Jeremy, I’m home! Oh, Dr. Schmidt, you’re here too! My husband was just saying you never come to dinner–did you hear him and decide to show up?”
Evelyn had met Charles‘ wife before while treating Jeremy’s leg. They weren’t close, but they could talk normally.
So seeing her again felt natural.
But Harriet froze. She turned to Charles, stunned. “Honey … Mr. Charles, you’re married?”
“Yes, many years now. This is my wife, Sonya. Sonya, this is Dr. Schmidt’s colleague, now working at the mountain hospital–Harriet Davis,” Charles said, introducing them.
Sonya held out her pale hand politely. “Hello, Dr. Davis. I’m Sonya Cannon, a reporter.”
But Harriet didn’t move. She just stared at Sonya like she was trying to see straight through her.
And suddenly, what had been blurry in Evelyn’s mind a moment ago became perfectly clear.
