Reborn for Love and Revenge
Chapter 88 Rowan’s Slump

To keep things from dragging on, Tom and Harriet’s transfer was handled very quickly.
That same afternoon, the papers were signed, their stuff packed, and they left right away.
Tom had worked at the hospital for years. He was known for being humble and kind, so everyone came to see him off and gave him small gifts.
Myrtle showed up too.
She handed Harriet honey in a water bottle, filled all the way up.
Even sealed, the sweet smell leaked out.
“This is honey from my own bees. There won’t be much good food in the mountains. If you get tired, make some tea with this–it’ll help.”
Harriet turned it down with a scowl. “Why are you pretending to be nice now? If it wasn’t for you and Evelyn, would I ever be going to such a place?”
“Maybe one day you’ll get it,” Myrtle said calmly, then left.
Harriet only later noticed the honey stuffed under her seat.
She picked it up, ready to toss it out the window, then paused.
Maybe in the mountains, there really wouldn’t be anything this sweet to eat.
She decided to keep it and pretend it was Myrtle’s gift to make up for her troubles.
After that, Myrtle went to see Evelyn.
She explained everything and said sorry. “I know what she did was wrong, but she treated me kindly before. I couldn’t be that heartless.”
Evelyn nodded. “That’s your choice. She might not care, but at least you’ll have peace of mind.”
Nothing in life is perfect. As long as your conscience is clear, you’ve done well.
Myrtle understood a little. “Thank you, Dr. Schmidt. I’ve learned so much following you.”
“There’s more to learn still. Perhaps you can be my apprentice,” Evelyn teased.
She was joking, but Myrtle took it seriously.

She almost bowed as a ceremonial display.
Evelyn panicked, trying to stop her, but couldn’t.

Finally, Rowan, who was nearby reading, spoke up to calm things down. “Evelyn hasn’t even finished her own training under me yet. How could I take on a grand–apprentice? My reputation would be ruined.”
Since Myrtle respected Rowan a lot, she didn’t bring it up again.
“Dr. Schmidt, I’ll get back to work. Dinner’s on me tonight–meatballs,” Myrtle said.
Evelyn watched her leave, then turned to Rowan. “Dr. Cook, don’t just sit there. Dr. Hawyward’s car is about to leave. Aren’t you going to see him off?”
“What for? Just seeing him makes me mad. Now that he’s gone, I’m happy. Why would I ruin it by seeing him off? That’s pointless. Better to read, write some papers while Twix is away–then laugh at him when he comes back,” Rowan said.
Evelyn pointed out, “You’re writing papers while reading the book upside down?”
Rowan looked down and realized the book was upside down.
He turned red but tried to play it off. “I have this strange habit. When I write, I read books upside down. You wouldn’t understand.”
Then he tossed the book on the desk and walked out.
At the door, he added, “Just going to the bathroom. Finish the homework I gave you—I’ll check later.”
Watching him head in the opposite direction, Evelyn chuckled and shook her head.

He should just be honest and say he’d miss Dr. Hayward. After all these years of bickering, neither of them could drop the act.
Gosh, those two are bound to drive each other crazy.
She stretched, then got started on the work Rowan left her.
Tom and Harriet’s sudden departure caused a stir at the little military hospital.
Wherever they went, people whispered.
It wasn’t hard to guess where the gossip came from.
Myrtle couldn’t take it and went to Evelyn for help, but Evelyn just ignored it.

Rumors are like ripples in water–the more you mess with them, the wider they spread.
So, it was better to leave it be. If no one involved speaks, the gossip eventually dies.
Sure enough, about three days later, the talk faded, like nothing had happened.
Life went back to normal.
For everyone–except Rowan.

Ever since Tom left for the mountains, Rowan wasn’t himself. He got lazy at work and wasn’t as strict with Evelyn anymore.
Even the older patients noticed. They joked he looked like someone who had just broken up with his first love.
Evelyn laughed but warned the old man not to say that in front of Rowan.
Otherwise, Rowan would explode, swearing Tom’s departure meant nothing.
But anyone could see the truth.
As his apprentice, Evelyn worried more than anyone.
Two weeks later, on her day off, she suggested taking Rowan to Southville to relax and also check on Jeremy’s leg.
Rowan wasn’t interested in “relaxing,” but when he heard Evelyn had healed someone paralyzed for years, his eyes lit up, and he agreed.
They took the shuttle to Southville and went straight to Jeremy’s house.
Jeremy was thrilled, chattering nonstop about the fried chicken they had promised. He quickly called Charles to buy high–quality chicken before lunch.
He also praised in front of Rowan, “Dr. Schmidt is amazing. My leg was hopeless at so many hospitals. I’d given up and even thought about selling popcorn at the bus station, sitting on a tire just to get by. Then I met her. Honestly, even making popcorn turned out lucky- otherwise, I’d never have met Dr. Schmidt.”
“That’s fate,” Rowan said matter–of–factly.
Jeremy slapped his thigh. “Exactly! Fate! Meeting Dr. Schmidt is the best thing that’s happened
to me.”
“Yep, my apprentice is just that good,” Rowan said proudly, not shy about praising her.
For a moment, some of Rowan’s sadness began to lift. Laughing with Jeremy and watching Evelyn guide the chat helped ease the weight on his heart.

Evelyn could’ve stopped the elders from piling on the compliments, but since Rowan seemed distracted and happier, she let it go.
