Chapter 85 The Thief Crying Thief
The early morning sun came through the window at the end of the hallway, soft and lazy.
But to Harriet, it felt harsh and burning, making her dizzy.
Evelyn’s hand was damp with sweat after Harriet had been gripping her for so long.
The sweat made the watch glint so sharply it nearly blinded Harriet.
This watch looked far nicer than her own, even with a tiny diamond set in it.
She had only seen a style like this once before, at the fanciest department store in Kingstead, and the price had shocked her.
And now, here it was, sitting in Evelyn’s hand.
“This can’t be. How is this not mine? Where’s my watch? Where did you hide it?” Harriet almost lost control, grabbing Evelyn’s shoulders and shaking her hard.
Evelyn calmly lifted her hand and pressed the most tender spot on Harriet’s wrist. It hurt just enough that Harriet broke into a sweat and let go.
“What is this–can’t find your watch, so now I’m the thief?” Evelyn asked.
Stephanie, who had been watching like she was enjoying a soap opera, suddenly realized it might just be a misunderstanding.
A little let down, she said, “See? I told you, it’s not Dr. Schmidt. You two deal with it–I’m leaving.”
Stephanie turned to walk off, but Evelyn stopped her.
“Anything else?” Stephanie asked.
“There’s still one room left. Until we check everywhere, please don’t leave. At least stay until we’re sure.”
The last room was Harriet’s.
Stephanie almost said, “How could it be Harriet’s room? It’s her own–watch,” but when she saw Evelyn’s cold stare, she froze, nodded, and went upstairs.
Sure enough, they found the watch in Harriet’s room.
It was right under her pillow, completely obvious.
Harriet was struck dumb.
Last night, I secretly took the watch from Myrtle’s room, gave Evelyn breakfast, and hid the watch in Evelyn’s room.
So how did it end up back in my own room?
And on top of that, Evelyn has another, even fancier watch.
“Dr. Davis, calling someone else a thief while being the thief yourself–isn’t that funny?” Evelyn asked quietly.

Stephanie’s eyes sparkled with excitement, thrilled by the juicy drama,
It was clear to anyone: If this blew up, Evelyn wouldn’t be the one in trouble it would be Harries
“No, it’s not me!” Harriet shouted quickly.
She scrambled for an excuse. “Maybe I remembered wrongly… Maybe I forgot to give it back to Myrtle last night.”
“So we were both dreaming the same dream last night? Don’t forget how upset Myrtle was this morning Evelyn reminded her.
Right then, Harriet truly understood what it meant to dig your own grave.
Her mind spun, and she tried another excuse. “Maybe I took it back from Myrtle last night, but forgot to tell her. That’s why this happened.”
“You forgot last night, and again this morning when
Stephanie finally couldn’t hold back.
we were checking the rooms?” Evelyn asked calmly.
She’d seen office politics plenty of times before, and this one was clear.
“Dr. Davis, are you trying to frame Dr. Schmidt so Myrtle thinks she’s trying to frame her? That’s not fair. You’d be hurting two people at once, especially Dr. Schmidt.”
Harriet’s face turned pale. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
“Alright, since we found the watch, let’s not waste more time. We should explain everything to Myrtle so she
can focus on her shift,” Evelyn said, taking control.
Stephanie, who had been dying to leave, lit up with relief.
Juicy news like this was bound to spread. The doctor from OB–GYN, the nurse from gastro, and plenty of others need to
hear it!
“Fine, you deal with it. I’m off. Don’t make things worse, and don’t let it affect work,” she said as she ran off as if her shoes were on fire.
Harriet suddenly snapped, yelling, “No, you can’t go! Evelyn stole the watch and is trying to frame me! And that fancy watch she has–who knows where it came from? We’re going straight to the director. I’m reporting this thief right now!”
The three of them rushed to Taylor Mayer, the hospital director’s, office.
Stephanie spoke first, telling the story but clearly leaning toward Evelyn’s side.
After all, Harriet had been acting weird the whole time, and the entire thing was fishy.
Harriet cut in sharply, “Maybe you two worked together! One stole it, and the other planned to sell it. You pretended to help me find it, but you’re just her accomplice! Dr. Mayer, look–Evelyn even has a fancy watch. Maybe she stole that too!”
“Evelyn, where did that watch come from?” Taylor asked.
“I gave it to her. What’s the problem, Mayer? Mentor giving a gift to a mentee–do you need to interfere?”

Rowan’s voice came from the doorway.
The gray–haired man might’ve looked frail at first, but the moment he stepped in front of Evelyn, his presence filled the room. “I gave her the watch, alright? I
an afford it, and I wanted to!”
“Don’t lie! Where would you even get such an expensive watch? You’re clearly covering for Evelyn!” Harriet accused, desperate.
She refused to admit guilt.
If she confessed, she’d be punished while Evelyn and Myrtle walked away clean.
That wasn’t what she wanted.
Even if she got a warning, she wanted Evelyn dragged down with her.
But Rowan just snorted. “Go check if anyone else in this hospital lost a watch like this. And don’t think being from the city makes you better than the rest of us. Evelyn is far better than you, that’s for sure!”
“You…” Harriet had never been scolded like that before. She was too furious to reply.
After a long silence, she went back to her excuse. “I didn’t steal the watch. I don’t know why it was in my room. Maybe Evelyn planted it.”
