The Stolen Watch 

Rowall was known for being super strict. 

Right now, with his face looking all serious as he talked to Evelyn, he seemed even searler. 

Evelyn, why don’t you go talk to Dr. Cook first? I’ll head out.” Harriet pulled in her neck and rart at the door 

Although she secretly envied how Rowan always looked out for Evelyn, she knew she couldn’t deal with him being this intense every single day. 

When Harriet was finally gone, Evelyn walked over to Rowan’s desk and asked softly, “Did I do something wrong?” 

“The patient files I asked you to organize this morning–do you even care? Or were you just planning to take the day off and mess around?” 

But before Rowan could keep going, he realized he was wrong. 

Evelyn pulled out a thick stack of patient files from the drawer and carefully handed them over. “I finished them last night. I even left you a note on your desk. Didn’t you see it?” 

Looking closer, Rowan noticed the note had slipped to the floor because the drawer wasn’t fully shut. 

Evelyn pressed her hands together and said, “I wasn’t careful enough. I promise it won’t happen again, Dr. Cook. Please forgive me?” 

Then she pulled out a small bag of cashews. “I got these for you–honey–roasted. Isn’t that your favorite?” 

“Eating too much of these is bad for the body.” 

Rowan said no, but his hand was already grabbing them. 

He found himself impressed. Evelyn had only been interning for a few days, but she always did her tasks neatly and carefully, never sloppy. 

After a few seeds, Rowan finally said, “I wasn’t trying to be mean earlier. I was just trying to scare away that annoying Harriet. Why bother hanging out with her?” 

“Harriet just acts a little spoiled sometimes, but she’s fine,” Evelyn said. 

She paused, then lifted her left hand to show the watch. “She even let me borrow her new watch.” 

“That thing’s cheap. You’re so easily pleased,” Rowan said, clearly not impressed. 

“You shouldn’t spend so much time with Harriet. Myrtle’s a good, honest girl, and Harriet slapped her so hard that her face swelled up. With your delicate skin, you’d get crushed! I don’t know what’s going on with Twix, mentoring that kind of apprentice.” 

Seeing Rowan start his long rant, Evelyn cut him off quickly. “Harriet acting like that isn’t Dr. Hayward’s fault, so stop blaming him.” 

“You’re my apprentice, girl. Why are you always taking other people’s side?” Rowan huffed. 

He kept staring at the watch, looking more and more annoyed. 

Finally, he said. “Tomorrow. I’ll get you your own watch. Don’t wear hebestem 

That’s so generous! You’d really to that, Dr. Cook? Evelyn didn’t turn him down. 

Rowan pulled up proudly. “Tve got a cousin who works in a watch factory. It’s cheaper than the stores a no coupons are needed. And you’re my favorite apprentice. I can’t let you get shown up by Twi apprentice, It’s settled- I’ll bring you one tomorrow.” 

“Alright, thank you, Dr. Cook, Evelyn said with a big smile. 

That night, Evelyn gave Harriet back the watch. 

Harriet handed it to Myrtle. “Here, you wear it tomorrow.” 

Myrtle had seen watches before, but this was her first time wearing one. 

She held up her arm and kept staring at it, eyes full of joy and excitement. 

But the excitement didn’t last long. 

The next morning, Myrtle knocked on Evelyn’s door, pale as a ghost.. 

She looked so white that there wasn‘

Evelyn opened the door, and Myrtle 

even a hint of color in her face. 

Swed, almost tripping over the table. 

She wasn’t even wearing shoes. 

“What’s going on? Why are you in such a rush this early?” Evelyn yawned. 

Suddenly, Myrtle burst into tears, gasping and sobbing 

“Dr. Schmidt, I … I lost Harriet’s watch. I put it by my pillow last night, and this morning, it was gone. I searched everywhere and couldn’t find it. What do I do now?” 

Evelyn knelt down and slid a pair of slippers onto Myrtle’s feet. “Don’t worry. We’ll find it.” 

“Can you come look with me? I’m scared to tell Harriet. What if she demands that I pay for it?” 

The watch, a mechanical one, was worth about six months of Myrtle’s pay! 

Seeing how panicked she was, Evelyn nodded and started getting dressed to go. 

But before they could head out, Harriet came in holding breakfast, smiling. “Evelyn, I brought you two sandwiches… Oh, Myrtle, you’re here too. Have you eaten?” 

Myrtle trembled all over, unable to look her in the eye. 

Harriet noticed right away. “What’s wrong? Did something happen? Want me to help? We’re best friends, after all. Tell me.” 

“N–no… I…” Myrtle stammered,/unable to speak. 

Evelyn spoke up for her. “Someone stole the watch from her room. She’s scared you’ll make her pay. That’s why she’s panicking.”

Then he looked at Harriet. Right, Harriet?* 

Harriet nodded quickly. “Evelyn’s right. Someone stole it–it’s not your fault. Now we just have to catch the thief and clear your name. We’ll get the watch back too.” 

Hearing that. Myrtle felt the heavy weight in her chest lift right away. 

Then she asked carefully. “Where do we even start looking for the thief?” 

After thinking a bit, Harriet explained clearly, “The only people who knew about the watch last night were the ones who saw us switch it. Otherwise, the thief would’ve gone to my room or Evelyn’s. Do you remember who was there?”
