Reborn for Love and Revanos.
Chapter 81 Good Friends
Harriet never imagined that a girl from a small city would have such fine things.
The soap on the windowsill was Hero soap. Ration coupons for it were nearly impossible to get money alone could not buy it.
When she left Kingstead, she had searched everywhere for a bar of that soap.
She had walked miles and combed every supply store, but without coupons no one would sell it, not even for double the price.
And now Evelyn had one sitting right here.
Harriet’s pride seethed. She wanted nothing more than to crush that soap in her hand.
“What’s wrong? Is there a problem with this room?” Evelyn asked again.
Harriet snapped back and forced a smile. She waved her hand dismissively. “Nothing’s wrong. Just a few roaches, that’s all. Tonight you’ll sleep in my room, and later we can switch back.”.
The moment the words left her mouth, Myrtle tugged nervously at Evelyn’s sleeve. “Dr. Schmidt, if there really are cockroaches in your room, you can stay in mine. It’s smaller, but we can squeeze in. It might be cramped, but it’ll work.”
“That would be chaotic,” Harriet cut in. “You and Dr. Schmidt don’t even have the same shifts. What happens if one of you wakes the other up? And if either of you makes mistakes at work because you’re worn out, what then?”
The word mistakes silenced Myrtle instantly.
She could afford to get scolded for slipping up, but Evelyn was different.
Evelyn’s mentor was Rowan Cook.
Evelyn had shown her nothing but kindness. If Myrtle dragged her into trouble, then she would be the worst kind of person.
Her eyes darted to Evelyn, searching for guidance.
“Dr. Schmidt, what do you think?”
She had already resolved that if necessary, she’d give up her own room for Evelyn.
It was just cockroaches. Surely they wouldn’t climb onto the bed at night.
But Evelyn only smiled softly and turned to Harriet. “Since you want me to stay in your room so much, I’ll take you up on it. Thank you.”
“There’s nothing to thank me for,” Harriet said with a grin. “I thought about what happened yesterday, and it was my fault. Let’s call it water under the bridge. From now on, we’re three close friends. How about that?”
“Of course.” Evelyn nodded.
And just like that, the room switch was settled.

Harriets room was on the second door turked at the very end of the hall. A cluster of tall tee the place tool in summer. Taylor had even put in screened windows and doors to keep mo was a small but thoughtful perk for the intern from Kingstead.
Myrtle helped Evelyn carry down her bedding, her eyes bright with excitement.
Dr. Schmidt. I checked everywhere. There aren’t any cockroaches here. You can rest easy now
“That’s good,” Evelyn said with a smile,
At noon, Harriet invited them both to lunch in the cafeteria. She even paid for an extra bowl of tomato stew, saying it was for Myrtle.
Myrtle was touched.
Growing up poor in a rural town, the only thing that was in her mind was working hard and keeping her head down. She didn’t understand petty rivalries or quiet schemes.
So Harriet’s smallest gesture felt like real reconciliation. She even agreed to help Harriet that afternoon with

Evelyn said nothing.
Some lessons had to be lived through or they never stayed.
Her role wasn’t to shield Myrtle but to let her learn how to survive.
Word quickly spread that the three had become inseparable. The reactions were mixed.

Myrtle, constantly showered with Harriet’s little favors, defended her at every turn. She insisted Harriet had changed and asked people to give her another chance.
Evelyn, listening from the side, only smiled faintly and left it at that.
On the third day, all three happened to have a half–day off.

“Let’s go downtown,” Harriet suggested. “See what’s fun, grab some food.”
Myrtle’s eyes lit up.
She had been in Southville longer than Harriet, but she had never dared to explore alone. She didn’t know the city well, and she had no friends to go with.
But now, with Evelyn–who was a local–it suddenly seemed easy.
Evelyn glanced at her schedule. It was almost time to check on Jeremy, but she agreed and led them both onto the bus.
They headed straight for the city’s largest department store.
Myrtle’s eyes lit up as she clung to Evelyn’s arm, asking questions about everything she saw.
Harriet only sneered.
Compared to Kingstil, even Southville’s biggest department dure looked like a come.
She could even guess how Evelyn had managed to get her hands on that rare Her brand soap
Every city had limited supplies. In Kingstead, demand was sky–high. The people there had enough mone to afford one.
But here? Southville was full of people too poor to buy anything. That was the only reason Evelyn had gotten lucky with her purchase.
Small–town folks probably didn’t even realize how valuable that soap really was.
Her thoughts broke when Myrtle turned to her. “Dr. Davis, you’ve been walking around all morning. Is there anything you want to buy?”
“Yeah.” Harriet pulled a coupon from her bag. “My dad gave me a ration coupon for a wristwatch. It’s about to expire, so I might as well use it. It makes keeping track of time easier too.”
Myrtle held the coupon carefully, her eyes shining.
“It’s even for a Blossom watch! Dr. Mayer has one. It must be really expensive. Dr. Davis, your dad must treat you really well.”
“It’s nothing. Just ordinary stuff,” Harriet waved her hand, but her face was filled with pride.
“Wow, Dr. Davis, your family must be really well–off. If a watch like this means nothing to you, that’s amazing. I wish I had that kind of money. Then my mom wouldn’t have to sew shoe soles every day just to make a living.”
She sighed, but then she brightened and pointed ahead. “Look, isn’t that the watch counter over there? Let’s go check it out!”
Back in 1983, a wristwatch was still a mark of luxury.
Inside the glass case, rows of polished watches gleamed, each carrying a price tag that made them far from ordinary.
Harriet chose a slim quartz watch. On her slender wrist, it looked graceful, almost magnetic in the way it drew the eye.
She twisted her wrist a few times before holding it out toward Evelyn. “Pretty, isn’t it?”
