Chapter 39.
Rosalind was startled when the phone rang. It was Cornelia.
“I never thought you had it in you, Ms. Johansen.” Cornelia’s voice came through the line. “You’ve managed to get Christopher to throw everything away for you-his company, his parents. He left a meeting halfway just to fly to San Francisco and be with you.”
Rosalind didn’t hold back. “Cornelia, you sent those photos to the media, right? You thought it was funny, didn’t you? Now everyone knows that he’s cuckolded. Are you happy now?”
“Don’t turn this around on me. You’re the one with the moral failings, Rosalind. You made these choices, and I just exposed them,” Cornelia snapped back.
From the moment she married Christopher, Cornelia and Tristan had been against it.
It was simply because she came from a poor family, and her father had spent time in prison.
But Christopher had thrown down an ultimatum.”If you accept her, she’s your daughter-in-law. If not, consider me gone.”
Christopher dropped everything, stopped managing the company, refused his parents’ calls, and took her to a small island where they stayed for a month.
For that month, they watched the sun rise and set by the sea, with nothing but each other.
Rosalind could still vividly remember how deeply Christopher had loved her back then and how he was willing to abandon everything, defy his parents, just for her.
But now, he had said, “My parents want a grandson. Wouldn’t it be better if someone else carried the baby for
vou?”
Time had definitely worn away the love. She and Christopher were no longer from the same world.
Cornelia’s voice broke through her thoughts.”Name your price. If you’ll divorce Christopher, I’ll do satisfy your request.”
‘Name a price? You really are generous,” Rosalind responded with sarcasm.

“We are about to have a grandson. It’s not worth wasting energy on someone like you. Consider it money well spent, a way to prevent bad luck.”
‘Fine. I want 20 million dollars.”
Cornelia’s voice went an octave higher in disbelief.”How much did
you say?”
*20 million dollars. Consider it your son’s ransom. You wouldn’t hesitate, would you?”
Cornelia fell silent.
A few moments later, the phone passed to Tristan.
His voice was low and commanding.”Deal.”
When Rosalind hung up, she
couch beside her, leisurely sipping his coffee.
She was surprised. “You move without making a sound?”
I’m in my own home. I’ll move however I like. What’s it to you?” Eugene replied.
Rosalind sighed. Living under his roof, she had to swallow her pride.
Seeing her say nothing, Eugene shook his head. “Ms. Johansen, you’re full of surprises. You’ve already filed for divorce, just waiting for the day to collect the papers. But now, you’re turning around and shaking down the Foret family for a payout.”
Rosalind responded coolly, “She’s offering, so why wouldn’t I take it?”
“I thought you were above all this. The money, the games. But I guess not,” Eugene teased.
“Money is important,” she said.
“Those people ruined my father’s life and took everything from him. He died without even seeing his wife or daughter one last time.”
Rosalind often thought that if her father hadn’t owned that hotel and had just been a regular office worker, those people might never have targeted him.
If only their family could have lived in peace, together forever.
Eugene’s eyes flickered. He spoke quietly, “Just a heads up, don’t think it’s that simple. Even the Foret family, with all their wealth, won’t just hand over 20 million dollars without a fight. Be careful, Ms. Johansen. You could end up losing more than you gain.”
