Chapter 59 What a Coincidence
Once Evelyn said Austin wasn’t around, Seth finally found some courage.
He threw off the blanket and stared straight at her.
“What are you doing here? If you came to apologize, I don’t need it,” Seth muttered.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. “Apologize to you? Don’t flatter yourself.”
She’d only apologize to a jerk like him if pigs were flying.

Seth, confused, wondered silently why Evelyn had come. If it wasn’t to say sorry, then what?
“I came to remind you,” Evelyn said, her voice steady, “you know exactly why you got kicked. Don’t try to play the victim and drag me into it. If you do, you might end up worse off. I’m sure he gave you a warning, didn’t he?”
At those words, sweat formed on Seth’s forehead.
Yes-it was true.
When Austin left, he had warned Seth that if there was a next time, he would never be a man again.
When Evelyn caught Seth’s guilty look, she knew Austin had already scared him straight.
She slowly stepped closer to the bed and lightly patted his shoulder. “As long as you don’t mess with me, I won’t mess with you,” she said calmly. “But if you come after me, I won’t mind playing along. That night in the jail wasn’t too bad, right?”
Her smile faded, and her face turned dark, almost like a devil rising from hell.
The change was enough to make anyone’s heart race in fear.
Evelyn had that kind of power-when she smiled, it felt warm enough to melt a snow
mountain.
But when she turned cold, she could freeze a man in place.
She was both angel and demon in one.
…
“You Wh-what do you want?” Seth stammered. He tried to lean back, but the headboard was right behind him. There was nowhere to go.
“Relax,” Evelyn said, smiling again, her small teeth showing. “I’m just teasing you. All I’m

saying is, let’s make peace, alright?”
What choice did he have?

Between Evelyn’s unpredictable moods and Austin’s threats, Seth had no choice but to agree, no matter how much he hated it.
“That’s better,” Evelyn said smoothly. “After all, we did play couple once. Even if it was fake, people say it’s smart to stay on good terms, because you never know when paths will cross again.”
She gave his shoulder one more pat, then opened her hand with a sly grin. “So, got any cash on you?”
When Jasmine stepped into the hospital room, it looked calm, almost too calm.
“Son, did you two talk it out?” she asks suspiciously.
Seth nodded so hard it looked like his head might fall off. “Yeah, yeah, it’s all settled.”
“Then … what’s going on here?” Jasmine pressed.
Evelyn didn’t hesitate. She pulled out a wad of cash and placed it firmly in Jasmine’s hand. “Mrs. Blair, I don’t have much. This is everything I’ve got. Please take it as compensation. I hope you won’t mind.”
“Only 100 dollars?” Jasmine frowned, clearly unhappy. “That’s not enough. You need to give more!”
Evelyn glanced at Seth, looking troubled. “Then … would 500 dollars do?”
But before Jasmine could answer, Seth cut her off immediately. “No need. My hospital stay cost only about 50 bucks. This is more than enough. We’re square, I won’t bother you again. You should leave now.”
“What? No!” Jasmine was stunned,
Things couldn’t possibly end this easily.
But Seth stood his ground, his face darkening. “Let her go, Mom, or I’ll be upset.”
“But … ” Reluctant and clearly torn, Jasmine gave in, unwilling to anger her son. “Fine, Evelyn, you can go for now.”

Evelyn took the opening without a second thought.

“All right then. Take care and get well soon. Once you’re better, I’ll come by to visit your family. Goodbye, Mrs, Blair.”
She turned toward the door and, before leaving, winked at Seth on purpose. Her spirits lifted as she walked away.
The moment she was gone, Jasmine exploded with complaints. “Son, you must be blinded by that little minx. Sure, you’re fine now, but I was thinking we could’ve at least demanded more money-or even pushed her to marry you! Think about it! Her family has looked down on us long enough. If you brought their daughter home as your wife, wouldn’t that drive them crazy?”
She shook her head in frustration. “Even if you didn’t marry her, we should’ve gotten more cash. Zaid and Yvonne both work steady jobs with high pay. I’m out there selling hot dogs on the street. We could’ve asked for at least a thousand dollars!”
Seth felt like his heart was bleeding.
The truth was that the money Jasmine was clutching had come straight out of his wallet.
If she kept pushing like this, his little stash of savings would be drained dry.
“Mom,” he said firmly, “let’s just drop it. I’m fine; it was all just a misunderstanding. From now on, don’t get involved in my business, and don’t go picking fights with Evelyn.”
“What?”
Jasmine froze, utterly shocked.
She never imagined this day would come. For the sake of a woman-worse yet, a woman accused of having a lover-her son, the boy she had treasured for more than 20 years, was now pushing back against her.
What was so special about Evelyn anyway?
“Son.” Jasmine cried, wiping at her eyes. “I worked so hard to raise you, and now you won’t even let me meddle in your business. If something terrible happened to you, how would I
your father in heaven?”

Once she started complaining, she could go on for hours without repeating herself.
Seth felt like his head was splitting.
She didn’t know the truth at all-so why couldn’t she just stay out of it?

Between Evelyn and Austin beating him down and leaving him scarred inside, Seth’s mind
was a total mess.
Finally, he snapped and shouted, “I told you to stay out of it! If you don’t, you’ll drive me to my grave!”
With that, he yanked the blanket over his head and lay down, fuming.
Meanwhile, Evelyn took a cab to the arcade.
She had sworn she’d never set foot in that place again.
But because of Seth, she had no choice.
Austin was reckless, impossible to control, and never played by the rules.
If she didn’t warn him now, who knew what chaos he might stir
up next time?
But when she asked the receptionist, she got an unexpected answer. Austin wasn’t there.
Evelyn wasn’t fully convinced. “Don’t tell me Austin knew I was coming to give him trouble, so he hid on purpose?”
The receptionist shook his head quickly, looking sincere. “No, really. Uh-sorry, almost slipped-Evelyn, Austin’s brother, came early this morning and picked him up. I think they went back to their hometown.”
“Did he say when he’d be back?” Evelyn pressed.
“Yeah, three days from now,” the receptionist answered,
Evelyn blinked in surprise and murmured under her breath, “What are the odds?”
Philip had just told her he was leaving for his family’s estate today, and he’d be back in three days.
Strange. Their schedules lined up almost perfectly.
