Chapter 58 Seth the Coward
The next morning, Evelyn got up early on purpose.
Ever since she had changed Jeremy’s checkups to once every three days, she found herself with more free time.
And since it was Monday, she planned to head to the bank and wire the money she had promised to the Southville Times.
She and Charles had already agreed that once the paper received the funds, they would run the article the very next day.
Now seemed like the perfect time.
After filling out the form, Evelyn asked the bank teller, “For this transfer, I can ask for a receipt, right?”
‘Of course.” The teller nodded.
He paused, then asked with a puzzled smile, “But will you really get reimbursed for something like this?”
‘Let’s see,” Evelyn replied casually.
The teller, polite as ever, didn’t press further. He quickly printed out the receipt and handed it over.
Evelyn thanked him, slipped it into her bag, and turned to head home.
But right as she reached her front door, she spotted someone loitering nearby–Jasmine.
Ever since that ugly scene when she tried to make trouble over Seth and ended up humiliating herself, Jasmine had kept quiet for a long time.
Now here she was again. Evelyn raised an eyebrow. What trick was she planning this time?
Evelyn had no desire to deal with her.
In her past life she’d had far too many run–ins with this spiteful woman, and just the sight of her stirred up disgust.
Still, Jasmine was standing guard at the front steps, making it impossible for Evelyn to go
inside.
Her only option was to walk away for a while and let Yvonne or Zaid deal with the problem

instead.
But before she could turn, Jasmine spotted her and called out, “Evelyn!”
She broke into a run, heading straight toward her.
So much for avoiding it. Trouble, once it found you, couldn’t be dodged.
Evelyn straightened her shoulders and forced herself to stay calm.

On the surface, she kept her cool. Inside, though, she was fuming. She finally asked flatly, “What do you want?”
“Y–you know exactly what you did!” Jasmine snapped, though her voice carried more fear than strength.
The memory of last time still haunted her.
This girl wasn’t as easy to handle as she’d thought.
Truthfully, Jasmine had planned on confronting Yvonne today. Yvonne was softer, easier to
pressure.
But since she’d bumped into Evelyn, she might as well get straight to the point.
Evelyn frowned, puzzled. “What are you talking about? What had I done?”
Honestly, she had no idea what Jasmine was going on about.
For weeks, she hadn’t crossed paths with Seth or Jasmine.
Suddenly getting accused out of nowhere was baffling.
But Jasmine didn’t believe her. She leaned in, lowering her voice like she was spilling some dark secret.
“Don’t play dumb. Yesterday, when you met up with your lover, you nearly ruined Seth, made sure he could never have kids. And now you want to deny it?”
Evelyn finally understood.
Jasmine, who was usually loud and brash, hadn’t been yelling at her house that day. She’d only lingered around outside, pacing the front steps.
Why? Because she didn’t want the neighbors to gather and start gossiping.

If word got out about her son’s trouble, it would spread from one house to ten, then to a hundred. After that, Seth might never find a wife.
But the situation wasn’t something Evelyn could allow to stand.
She didn’t have some secret lover or plot against Seth.
Why should she let herself get dragged into the mud over a scumbag like him? It wasn’t worth it.
You can’t just throw out wild accusations,” Evelyn snapped. “I don’t have a lover. What you ust said counts as slander, and I could take you to court for it. Even if you don’t end up in prison, you’ll still spend time in detention.”
asmine froze. She didn’t want jail, and she didn’t want a detention.
But she clearly remembered what Seth had told her–that right after Evelyn spoke with some man, that man came over and kicked him down.
If that wasn’t a lover, then why else would a man hit her son so hard?

suspect.
‘I’ll say this again,” Evelyn warned. “Call him my lover one more time, and you’ll be the one hauled off in handcuffs. Why did your son get beaten? Maybe you should ask him what he had done. Nobody would beat him up for fun. I don’t think your son’s that annoying–do you?”
‘My son’s handsome! Of course he is. That man must’ve been jealous of him—that’s why he’s your lover!” Jasmine shouted back, her voice shrill.
Evelyn pressed her lips together, patience running thin. “Fine then. Let’s go see your son at the hospital; how about that?”
Evelyn found the situation tricky.
The only person who would hit that hard had to be Austin, that troublemaker.
Even though she figured Seth must have been the one to provoke him first, still … Wasn’t this just creating more problems for her?
If Yvonne found out, who knew how far she’d spread the story?
And right now, Yvonne was desperate for any dirt on her, anything she could use as leverage

to get those negatives back.
Evelyn wasn’t about to give her that chance.
So she followed Jasmin to the hospital.

“You and my boy Seth face each other right now. If you can’t explain yourself, I’ll march over to your house and make you marry him on the spot!”
When Evelyn heard that, she nearly laughed out loud.
So that was Jasmine’s plan.
Well, it made sense. Seth had been hurt in a delicate spot. There was a real chance he’d never find a wife again, and no matter what, Jasmine had to get him one somehow.
That was why she wasn’t screaming and making a big scene.
If her family was embarrassed and furious, Seth’s chances would be gone forever.
Evelyn didn’t reply. She just followed her into the hospital room.
Seth had been lying quietly in bed, but the moment he saw Evelyn walk in, panic shot across his face. He yanked the blanket up and pulled it over his head, clutching it as if his life depended on it.
He looked as if he’d just seen a ghost.
“Look at him! My son’s terrified of you. You need to take responsibility!” Jasmine cried.
Evelyn bit back a sharp remark and asked Jasmine to step outside so she could speak with Seth alone.
“What’s so secret that you can’t say it in front of me? You’re not planning to threaten my boy, are you?” Jasmine’s eyes darted over Evelyn suspiciously, narrowing like a hawk’s.
Evelyn just smiled. “Threaten him? With what? He wasn’t a man now. Don’t worry. I’m a law- abiding citizen. I don’t break the law, and murder is against the law.”
Honestly, what was there to threaten?
Seth was nothing more than a coward who had let Alice use him.
Evelyn didn’t take him seriously at all.
Jasmine still looked uneasy but finally stepped out. Before closing the door, she called, “Seth,

cupcake, I’ll be right outside. If she tries anything, just shout. I’ll come running to save you!”
Evelyn was speechless.
So she really thought Evelyn was the danger here.
Evelyn rolled her eyes and waited until Jasmine was gone. Then she turned toward the lump under the blanket. “Alright,” she said firmly. “Come out and talk.”
Silence. He stayed hidden under the blanket, stiff as a statue. Evelyn crossed her arms and said, “He’s not here. You’re safe. Isn’t that good enough for you?”
Slowly, very slowly, the blanket cracked open just a sliver.
