Chapter 54 A Small Favor

Jeremy could talk for hours.

He hadn’t seen Evelyn in days, so once he started chatting, he just couldn’t stop.

By the time the sun was setting, Evelyn had no choice but to say goodbye. Only then did Jeremy reluctantly wrap it up, though not before making her promise to come back the next morning to keep giving him his therapy massages.

Jeremy walked them out to the front gate.

That’s when he suddenly noticed Philip. He pointed and asked, “Oh, Dr. Schmidt, is this boyfriend?”

Evelyn pressed a hand to her forehead in disbelief.

your

Really? Philip had been standing there the whole time, and Jeremy only now realized?

“Yes, he’s my boyfriend.” Evelyn didn’t hold back when it came to praising Philip. “He just got assigned as a new lieutenant at the base. Handsome, isn’t he?”

But Jeremy shook his head with disapproval.

He stared at Philip for a long moment, then said seriously, “Young man, you’ve got to work hard. Do your best to become a commander as soon as you can. Dr. Schmidt is an amazing doctor, and only a commander is worthy of her!”

“Jeremy …” Evelyn was stunned.

She was just helping him with his leg, and now in Jeremy’s mind she had somehow risen to a level so amazing that only a commander could match.

That was a bit much for her to handle.

Before she could say anything else, Philip had already nodded solemnly. “I’ll work hard and make commander as soon as I can,” he promised.

“Good! That’s the spirit,” Jeremy said, fired up. “When I was young, I swore I’d become the best carpenter in the whole county before I married my wife. And I did it. That’s the kind of determination you need,”

Philip agreed again without hesitation.

Evelyn, on the other hand, felt completely defeated.

The two of them were getting along way too well, and somehow her future had already been decided for her.

She quickly stepped in, pulling Philip away before Jeremy could add anything else.

They climbed into the pickup, and Philip drove her home.

On the way, Evelyn absentmindedly fiddled with her seatbelt, thinking back to the conversation. Curiosity got the better of her.

She asked, “Was everything you just said to Jeremy true?”

“Yes,” Philip replied, short and firm.

That raised another question.

“So are you trying to become commander for me, or because it’s your dream?”

Evelyn thought it was a trick question, like asking, “If your mom and I fell into a river, who would you save?”

If he said it was just for her, then he’d sound like he had no real ambition.

If he claimed it was only for himself, then clearly he’d been lying to her.

It was a tricky question, but Evelyn asked anyway, a sly smile tugging at her lips.

In both her lifetimes, she had never seen Philip get flustered.

It would be fun to see him squirm.

But Philip didn’t hesitate at all. “For you, and for myself,” he answered.

That vague?

“You’d better explain that one,” Evelyn challenged, giving him a second test.

And just like before, Philip wasn’t stumped.

“To protect this country means I can protect you. And like Jeremy said, only when I’m strong enough to stand as your equal can we truly walk side by side. Evelyn, I want to be the man who can always keep you safe.”

Philip’s answer was perfect. It swept away every doubt.

Evelyn’s heart fluttered wildly.

Afraid he might notice, she quickly turned her gaze toward the window, pretending to answer casually. “Fine, you win. Can’t believe you even had an answer for that.”

By then, the car had already pulled up in front of her house.

Evelyn stepped out, waved him goodbye, and slipped inside.

Earlier, Yvonne had been sitting on the couch staring into space. Now the whole house was

silent.

She was gone, and Evelyn didn’t care where.

Evelyn knew Yvonne was tearing her hair out to uncover the money.

No need to make things worse. A few days of peace and quiet sounded like a good idea.

After all, people need rest to stay sharp for the real battles.

So for the next few days, Evelyn took it easy. In the mornings, she still went over to Jeremy’s place to give him massages. In the afternoons, she stayed home reading or went out for walks.

Yvonne, on the other hand, looked worse by the day.

Her face grew pale, her eyes heavy with fatigue. Zaid noticed and felt sorry for her. He bought armfuls of vitamins and supplements, hoping to help her regain her strength.

But with the end of the month closing in, it was clear none of it would really help.

Evelyn also stopped by the neighborhood near the house that Yvonne was trying to sell. She quietly slipped a little money to a few neighbors, asking them to keep an eye on whether the place was sold.

The neighbors hadn’t passed along any news, but Evelyn soon noticed something different- Yvonne seemed to be reviving.

She started dressing up again, painted her cheeks with blush, and smoothed powder across her face, and from a distance, she looked delicate and fragile, like a flower swaying in the

breeze.

The hollowness in her cheeks was neatly covered with powder and blush.

It was clear Yvonne had found some kind of solution.

Evelyn didn’t rush. She kept her calm, enjoying her easy days.

But the next morning, when she went back to Jeremy’s house, she smiled at him and Charles and said, “From now on, I don’t need to come every single day. Jeremy’s leg is healing really well. I’ll just stop by every three days.”

The two men were deeply grateful.

After all, going from being stuck in a chair to walking again felt like nothing short of a miracle.

“Dr. Schmidt, I don’t even know how to thank you,” Charles said earnestly. “You healed my dad’s leg and cured my insomnia. Now, the moment my head hits the pillow, I’m out like a light- -no more night sweats either.”

Of course, Evelyn had her way of being thanked.

She leaned close to Charles’s ear and whispered her request.

For the editor-in-chief of the Southville Times, it was nothing difficult. What puzzled him, though, was her explanation.

“Why didn’t that person come in person? Something this important, and she doesn’t even bother showing up herself?”

“She’s busy,” Evelyn answered with a soft smile, covering everything with a calm expression.

“Well, alright then. Since it’s you asking, Dr. Schmidt, I’ll make sure it gets done,” Charles promised firmly.

Evelyn gave him a polite nod. “I’ll wire the payment to your office. Thank you.”

“What payment? No way! Dr. Schmidt, you healed both me and my father-we already owe you so much. Forget this request-if it were something much bigger, I’d still be the one who should help you, free of charge.”

But no matter how Charles argued, Evelyn stood her ground.

“She’s the one paying, not me. You know how it is. If I don’t spend this money where it’s supposed to go, she’ll either think I’m keeping it for myself or that I’ve got more pull than 1 should. Either way, it’d cause me trouble later.”

As she spoke, Evelyn even furrowed her brows, as though she could already picture the problems ahead.

Seeing this, Charles finally gave in.

“Alright. But if you ever need something for yourself down the line, I’ll help you-free. That’s

Evelyn’s lips curved into a smile. “Deal.”
