Chapter 51 Austin’s Fiancee

Finished
Evelyn stayed at Brookhaven Quarters for three days before finally coming home.
When she walked in, only Yvonne was there.
In just three days, Yvonne looked like she had wasted away. She had lost weight so quickly that the dark circles under her eyes seemed to sag all the way down her cheeks.
Clearly, the money had been eating her alive.
But Evelyn didn’t care. She walked past the living room without so much as a glance, heading straight upstairs.
Just as she stepped onto the staircase, Yvonne’s voice drifted up from the couch, thin and haunting, like a ghost hiding in the shadows. “Does it make you happy when I look like this?”
Evelyn smiled.
A soft, graceful curve lit her face; the sunlight from the window seemed to frame her beauty
even more.
She tapped her fingers lightly against the oak handrail, pretending not to understand. “I don’t know what you mean. What’s there for me to be happy about?”
She paused, then sprinkled more salt on Yvonne’s wound with deliberate cruelty. “Unless, of course, you’ve already cashed in those Treasury Bonds, got the money, and you’re planning to take me out to pick some gold jewelry as my wedding gift?”
The words hit Yvonne like boiling water. She shot up from the couch in fury.
‘How dare you even bring that up! If it wasn’t for you, would I be in this mess? I haven’t even slept five hours in the last three days!”
It was all Evelyn’s fault.
If she hadn’t mentioned the bonds to Bill, the money would have been hers forever.
Not just that-everything the family had would eventually belong to her.
But now? Everything was falling apart.
Because of Evelyn.
The more frantic Yvonne became, the more satisfied Evelyn felt with the storm she stirred.

This was exactly what she wanted.
Finished
No wonder Yvonne looked so worn down-three days and less than five hours of sleep in total would destroy anyone.
But Evelyn felt no sympathy. If anything, she smiled coldly. Her sharp, intimidating gaze sliced toward Yvonne, and the woman froze under it, afraid to move.
“You’re struggling with this mess because you went after something you never should have touched. I gave you a solution-you just refused to take it. So how can you possibly blame me?”
Her calm yet cutting words hit like a blade straight into Yvonne’s heart; she couldn’t argue with her.
Evelyn added softly, almost like a warning, “Take a good look at where things stand. Do you think you have the right to yell at me, my dear mom?”
Yvonne staggered, her knees giving way as she dropped onto the couch.
In that moment, she was completely defeated.
Those photographs left her with no leverage, no bargaining power.
She wasn’t even worthy to negotiate with Evelyn.
Now all she could do was watch, hollow-eyed, as Evelyn walked back to her room. Yvonne looked every bit as pitiful as a stray dog left out in the rain.
Back in her room, Evelyn let her gaze sweep over everything.
It looked exactly the same as when she’d left. Nothing had been touched.
That meant Yvonne hadn’t sneaked in during the past few days to search for the negatives.
Evelyn knew why. Two reasons, really.
First, Yvonne was already worn thin to recover that money, with no energy to spare.
Second, after the last disaster, she was too scared to act recklessly again. She knew crossing Evelyn could backfire badly.
Good. Yvonne had finally learned her lesson.
Evelyn chuckled quietly, her pearly white teeth showing, almost looking sweet and harmless.

With nothing else pressing to do, she flopped onto the bed to get some sleep.
But the moment her head touched the pillow, something felt wrong.
Her room had been disturbed-it was done carefully, almost invisibly.

She lifted the pillow and froze. Her breath caught for several seconds when she saw the item.
There lay an arcade token, stamped with the Southville Arcade logo.
She didn’t need to guess who had put it there.
Austin.
That scumbag.
She hadn’t thought he’d go this far-finding her home address, sneaking inside quietly, and sliding that token beneath her pillow.
The only reason she knew it had been quiet was simple: if Yvonne or Zaid had seen him, the house would have erupted into chaos.
Since they hadn’t, he must have slipped in like a thief.
Her brows pulled together sharply. She hurried to the window. Sure enough, there on the sill was a dirty footprint.
Not far from her window stood a thick elm tree in the yard.
It was obvious-Austin had climbed the tree, leapt into her room, and broken in that way.
The man was acting like a petty criminal, sneaking around in the dark.
As she was cursing him in her mind, Evelyn brushed her fingertips across the footprint.
The tread pattern looked familiar.
Military boots.
Austin is a soldier?
No. That couldn’t be right.
Evelyn shook her head and denied the possibility.
No way. A street punk who got his kicks from stealing other people’s girlfriends couldn’t

possibly be connected to the military.

If he could snatch women, then a pair of army boots wasn’t anything to him-probably
stolen too.
Thinking this through, she picked up a newspaper and carefully rubbed out the footprint.
Living in this house meant she had to be extra cautious. Yvonne would use anything against
her.
If Yvonne found out a man had sneaked into her room, she’d twist it to her advantage in a heartbeat.
But removing that footprint wasn’t enough.
What really mattered was making sure Austin never showed up again.
Only then could she relax.
Evelyn was troubled with this.
She had hoped that while Yvonne was busy chasing to recover her money, she could have a few days of peace.
Surprisingly, Austin had barged into her life, bringing a whole new mess.
With a sigh, she changed her clothes and headed straight to the arcade.
Yvonne didn’t even bother to ask where she was going. She just sat slumped on the couch, drowning in her misery.
She had her hands full trying to figure out how to survive the current crisis-there was no energy left to worry about Evelyn.
If she could just get through this disaster, then maybe she’d have the strength to deal with Evelyn again.
Meanwhile, Evelyn arrived at Southville’s largest arcade.
The place took up two whole floors, packed with rows of game machines, each one surrounded by laughing, shouting kids and teenagers.
Looking for someone here would be nearly impossible.
Then she remembered what Austin had said last time. She walked straight to the counter where players exchanged cash for arcade tokens. Pulling out the bullet necklace, she spoke

firmly.
“Hi, can you help me? I need to see Austin.”

“Austin?” The cashier’s eyes lit up. He glanced at the necklace, then at Evelyn, and his tone suddenly turned respectful. “So you’re his fiancée! Austin’s downstairs in the basement. I’ll take you right away!”
Evelyn froze, speechless. She quickly tried to correct him. “Don’t call me that. I’m not Austin’s fiancée.”
But before she could finish, an arm wrapped tightly around her shoulders, and the heavy scent of cologne and sweat surrounded her.
At her ear came Austin’s smug, mischievous laugh. “Sweetie, you finally showed up.”
