Chapter 50 She’ll Get the Money
Close to midnight, heavy rain poured over Southville.
Finished
The downpour came hard, each raindrop hitting the ground like a marble, bursting into tiny sparks of water droplets before running down the cracks in the pavement, gathering into streams that flowed toward the lower streets.
Inside Evelyn’s room, it felt as if the storm had followed her in-water dripping not from the ceiling, but from Yvonne’s soaked hair.
She and Zaid lived in a small room out back, and to reach Evelyn’s place, she had to cross the yard through the storm. By the time she stepped inside, she was completely drenched.
Evelyn handed her a towel and watched as Yvonne roughly rubbed her hair dry.
At first, Yvonne worked at it with determination, but then she caught Evelyn’s fake smile from the corner of her eye. Something about that look made her uneasy.
“This was your plan all along, wasn’t it?” Yvonne snapped.
The dim light from the bare bulb overhead threw strange shadows across Evelyn’s face. She didn’t look like the sweet girl she appeared to be during the day but a vengeful spirit stretching out claws, ready to drag Yvonne down into hell.
First, there was Alice’s situation.
Then, Yvonne nearly crippled her right hand.
And now, tonight’s disaster with the Treasury Bonds.
Step by step, Evelyn was driving her toward ruin-not just death, but something worse.
Yvonne couldn’t take it anymore. That’s why she braved the storm just to confront Evelyn face-to-face.
But Evelyn only smiled, wide-eyed and innocent, like some clueless teenager. “Mom, what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
“The Treasury Bonds-did you push Bill to say that? You want me dead, don’t you?”
The barrage of questions came in a rush, proof of the storm raging inside Yvonne’s chest.
Evelyn tilted her head, still smiling innocently. She said calmly, “So you think I can play you like a fool, leave you with no way out. Is that it?”

Yvonne froze. She couldn’t answer.
To admit it would mean confessing she couldn’t outmatch a girl half her age.
But if she denied it, how was she supposed to explain tonight’s mess?
She hadn’t crossed the yard in that rain just to argue for nothing.
The air in the room turned thick with silence. Neither wanted to break it first.

Finally, Evelyn spoke, her tone almost casual, “Do you want me to come up with a way to help you?”
“What way?” Yvonne shot back, eyes narrowed in suspicion.
She didn’t trust Evelyn’s sudden kindness. Not one bit.
Evelyn leaned toward her and said, “Didn’t your work unit give you a place in Southdale? If you sell it, you could cover the money easily.”
Yvonne did have an apartment in Southdale.
It wasn’t much-just two bedrooms and a living room, around 700 square feet. Back then, the benefits weren’t generous, and the place was small.
In Evelyn’s past life, after Victor tricked their family into handing over both a state ID and a job, he pressured Yvonne until she gave up the apartment. He lived there comfortably while she was left with nothing.
Later, Evelyn found out that Yvonne had only gotten that apartment because Bill had used his old connections to pull strings for her.
Anything tied to her grandfather, Evelyn was determined to take back.
The moment Evelyn mentioned it, Yvonne jumped up as if the floor had turned red hot.
She quickly stepped back, keeping distance between them, and raised her voice. “Are you out of your mind? Sell my house? What a joke!”
Evelyn had expected that reaction. She only shrugged and reminded her calmly, “Well, my dad’s room is far away, but Grandpa’s is right next door. Why don’t you yell louder and wake him up so we can all talk it through together?”
Yvonne instantly covered her mouth.
After a pause, she whispered, “What will it take for you to stop?”

She didn’t have the money. And selling the house was out of the question.

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch, Mom,” Evelyn replied smoothly. “If you won’t sell the place and can’t come up with the money, maybe it’s time you just told the truth.”
That was impossible.
If she confessed, her life would be over.
Bill might collapse from anger, and Zaid would probably file for divorce.
She’d be forced out of the city, sent back to the countryside to live a miserable life.
That was something she could never accept.
“I’ll figure something out,” Yvonne muttered, turning on her heel and hurrying out of the
room.
Coming to Evelyn tonight had been a mistake.
She hadn’t learned anything, and now she’d been told to sell her home.
Evelyn was a devil.
Behind her, Evelyn only watched with a quiet, knowing smile.
Every reaction was exactly what she had expected.
If Yvonne had surrendered so easily, it would have raised suspicions.
There was no need to rush. Fishing always took patience.
She turned off the light, lay back down, and closed her
eyes.
Tonight, someone would be lying awake in misery. But it certainly wouldn’t be her.
The next morning, Evelyn woke refreshed and full of energy.
Yvonne, on the other hand, looked worn out.
She had been caught in the rain the night before and collapsed into bed as soon as she returned to her room. But she tossed and turned all night.
By morning, she was running a slight fever. Her face was pale, drained of any color.
Zaid noticed at once, and his heart ached for her.

Over the years, Yvonne had always given him a wonderful impression-delicate, sweet, and tender as a pool of water. And because of that, most of the time, he naturally took her side.
After breakfast, Zaid insisted on taking Yvonne to the doctor.
Evelyn stayed behind.
She wanted to spend more time with her grandfather.
The two of them sat at the kitchen table, sipping oatmeal and eating bread rolls, chatting idly between bites.
Somehow, the talk drifted back to the events of the night before.
Before his retirement, Bill had been a commander in the army, a man who had dealt with all kinds of people. So he had easily caught Yvonne’s nervous behavior last night.
He knew Evelyn was right-the money had long been pocketed by Yvonne.
That worried him. If Yvonne couldn’t come up with the money, then what?
Bill had already thought of an answer.
“If she can’t produce it,” he told Evelyn, “then I’ll make sure your dad divorces her. As for Alice, if she comes back, I’ll give her some money so she can live on her own-or let her stay with Yvonne if she likes. And if she doesn’t come back, well, then we save the money altogether.”
“No, she’ll come up with it,” Evelyn said firmly. Yvonne wasn’t the type to lose something big over something small. Between the money and a marriage that kept paying off, she would fight to hold onto it.
“In fact, there’ll be more than 5,000.”
Bill frowned. “More? Where would she get more?”
Evelyn smiled knowingly. “Treasury Bonds earn interest, Grandpa. Have you forgotten?”
That left Bill puzzled.
The bonds were long gone-so where was the interest supposed to come from?
Had he forgotten, or had his precious granddaughter?
No matter how much he pressed her, Evelyn refused to explain further. “You’ll see soon enough. Just be patient and wait for the good news.”

Evelyn seemed so confident. Bill let it go. He casually leaned back in his chair with a chuckle.
“Evelyn,” he said warmly, “you’ve grown up.”
