Chapter 36 Give Me the Money First

When Evelyn got home, Irene was already waiting for her at the door.

From a distance, she rushed over, trying to look inside Evelyn’s bag.

Evelyn took a step back. “What are you doing?”

“You bought something, didn’t you? What is it? Let me see.” Irene insisted.

At that point, Evelyn pretty much knew what was going on.

She deliberately played it mysterious, refusing to open

the bag.

“It’s a secret. What’s the point of showing you? If you’re so curious, why don’t you ask my

mom?”

Irene flew into a rage. “You brat, you’re bargaining with me now? I have to see what’s in your bag, or I’ll tear your skin off!”

“Then try it,” Evelyn said calmly, standing her ground.

If she looked panicked or scared, maybe Irene would’ve known what to do.

But like this, Irene was completely at a loss.

At this moment, Evelyn was fearless.

Irene and Yvonne had suffered at her hands before, so they were a little

wary.

Evelyn didn’t move, and neither did Irene.

After a moment of stalemate, she asked again, “Did you buy medicine for Yvonne this morning?”

“Why don’t you ask my mom?” Evelyn repeated the same line,

Driving a wedge between them didn’t happen overnight.

Letting it simmer worked best.

While Irene was lost in thought, Evelyn walked inside.

It was mealtime. Yvonne and Victor were at the table. They saw Evelyn but said nothing, obviously not planning to invite her to eat.

Evelyn didn’t mind.

After massaging Jeremy’s legs for three hours, her arms were so sore she could barely lift them. She just wanted to lie down and get some rest.

She went straight upstairs and closed the door.

Yvonne listened intently until everything was quiet.

Then she turned to Victor and told him, “Victor, my hand is injured, so it’s not easy for me to go out. Please go to the police station and ask if there’s any news about Alice.”

It was scorching outside, and Victor didn’t want to go anywhere.

“If they had any news, they would’ve called. Why should I go there for nothing? It’s not worth the trouble,” Victor said with a pout.

Yvonne was furious.

That was her daughter, his niece, yet he was acting like this?!

“Do you even consider Alice family?” Yvonne shot back.

They started arguing at the table.

Zaid had already left for work after breakfast, so no matter how loud they were, no one would hear them.

In the end, Victor reluctantly agreed, stood up, and left.

Before heading out, he didn’t forget to ask Yvonne for five bucks, saying it was for a cab so he could get there and back faster, and let her know any news sooner.

Worry makes people lose their minds.

Yvonne didn’t even think twice and foolishly handed over the money,

It was only a five-minute walk from the building to the police station; he didn’t need that

much money.

The extra cash naturally went into Victor’s pocket.

He was in a great mood as he left the house, thinking about all the delicious food he could buy with the extra money.

Living in the city is so convenient; you can get whatever you want.

Looks like I should get my state ID as soon as possible.

With that in mind, Victor slipped on his shoes and stepped out the door.

He didn’t even notice what was coming until he heard someone outside yell “bitch!” and then

a foul-smelling, thick black liquid was dumped all over him.

It was shit!

Victor got drenched and couldn’t even open his eyes.

Inside, Yvonne and Irene heard the commotion and ran out.

When Yvonne saw who was at the gate, her face turned black.

It was Seth’s mom-Jasmine Blair.

Yvonne had seen Jasmine throw fits at the police station.

But she never expected her to stoop so low.

Throwing shit at someone’s doorstep … That was unhinged!

“Victor, are you okay?” Irene asked anxiously.

Hearing Victor groan that he’d gotten shit in his eyes and it hurt like hell, Irene’s eyes reddened. She stormed forward, ready to fight Jasmine to the death.

The old granny from the countryside was fierce and strong.

But Jasmine was no pushover.

She was a widow, and for years she made a living pushing her hot dog cart through the streets, to put Seth through school, so she was very strong.

Haggling with customers had also given her a sharp tongue.

Now, she held the ladle and was fighting Irene to a draw.

Yvonne, the only one left who hadn’t gotten covered in filth, couldn’t intervene because of her injured hand.

Yvonne saw that the situation was getting out of control and would soon attract a crowd of neighbors.

If Zaid heard about it, all her earlier efforts would be ruined.

After weighing her options and finding no way out, she went back inside and rushed upstairs to ask Evelyn for help.

Evelyn had heard the commotion, but she chose to stay out of it.

“Mom, there’s a lot of poop downstairs. It’s dirty,” Evelyn said softly.

She seemed unable to tell what was important and what wasn’t. She looked confused, only caring about her appearance.

Yvonne was frantic.

“If your dress gets dirty, I’ll buy you a new one. I’ll take you shopping tomorrow. Just help me get Jasmine to leave.”

The current Evelyn wasn’t someone to mess with.

If she could make Yvonne run in circles, handling a fierce woman would be easy.

Yvonne offered the deal, and Evelyn’s expression softened slightly.

After thinking for a moment, she said, “Just give me the money. Going out shopping with you feels weird.”

Fine. Whatever.

As long as she could get Jasmine to leave, anything was fine.

Yvonne agreed.

Evelyn held out her hand. “I want 50 bucks. Now.”

“Are you robbing me?” Yvonne was horrified and took a few steps back. “Fifty dollars? Are you going to empty out the department store?”

Evelyn’s expression remained the same. “Fifty dollars to empty a department store? Mom, you must be dreaming.”

She wouldn’t back down.

Fifty bucks in 1983 could buy dozens of nice outfits-almost as many as all of Evelyn’s clothes combined.

Yvonne was reluctant.

But without the money, Evelyn wouldn’t help.

So, Yvonne could only grit her teeth and say, “You go help first, and I’ll give you the money after.”

“Give me the money first,” Evelyn said. “We don’t trust each other, so I’m afraid you’ll go back on your word.”

After saying that, she smiled at Yvonne, like a sly little fox.
