Chapter 1
Right after freshman orientation, my new roommate, Stella, begged me for a tour of my dad’s
company.
I just wanted a peaceful four years of college, so I said yes.
Big mistake. The second she stepped into the building, she started acting like she owned the place.
“You! Get back to work! Anyone I see slacking off is staying late!”
“And you! Don’t even bother coming in tomorrow!”
I tried to stop her, but she just turned on me.
“What are you staring at? Go get me a glass of water!”
I wasn’t even mad. I was just morbidly curious.
I wonder if she’ll act like this when she’s in a police station?
The second we walked into my dad’s building, Stella wrinkled her nose.
“The Kael Corp Tower is nice, I Kaeless, but the feng shui in this lobby is all wrong. You need red
lanterns on both sides!”
“The fanciest restaurant back home did it, and their business exploded. I’m telling you this because we’re friends, Evelyn. You owe me dinner for this pro tip.”
I was already annoyed, but I fiKaelred she was from a small town and didn’t know any better.
“Dad’s out of the country for meetings,” I mumbled. “I’ll tell him when he gets back.”
Stella ignored me and marched straight to the reception desk..
“Who allowed you to sit down? Get up! You should be
22 landing during work hours!”
“You’re the face of the company! Sitting looks lazy!”
The receptionist, Katie, looked stunned but stood up politely.

“Ma’am, do you have an appointment?”
“If you could just sign in, please?”
Stella lost it. “An appointment? Are you kidding me?”
“Don’t you know who I am to Mr. Kael? You’re fired!”
She slammed the heavy Kaelest book on Katie. It slid and hit her forehead, leaving a welt. Still, Katie forced a smile.
“I’m so sorry, ma’am.”
“Please, give me another chance. I really need this job… my mom’s in the hospital…”
“Too late! And you called me ‘ma’am‘ again! Are you serious? It’s Mrs. Kael!”
“Now get out! NOW!” Stella shrieked.
Katie burst into tears and silently started packing up her desk.
She wasn’t bluffing.
I rushed over. “Katie, you’re not fired.”
“Take the rest of the day off, with pay, and get that bump looked at.”
“And submit your mom’s hospital bills to HR. The company’s insurance will cover it.”
Katie gave me a tearful, grateful bow and hurried away.
Stella glared at me.
“Are you undermining me, Evelyn? Is some random receptionist more important than our friendship?”
“Fine. I’ll let it slide this time. But don’t test me again.”
With that, she stalked towards the elevators.
The lobby was packed. The first elevator that arrived was already full.
A few employees recognized me.

Chapter 1
“Miss Kael! Are you here to see your father? He’s overseas.”
“Here, please, take my spot.”
“It’s fine,” I said, waving him off. “You’ll be late.”
“I’m just showing my friend around.”
Stella shoved right past me and into the elevator.
“Out! All of you!” she barked. “You don’t deserve to ride with me! Get out now, or you’re all fired
tomorrow!”
Startled, everyone scrambled out.
Stella casually fixed her hair.
“Honestly, why are regular employees even allowed to use the main elevators? It’s a waste of the Kael family’s time.”
“Evelyn, you should make a rule: elevators are for the Kael only.”
I snorted.
“By that logic, you should be taking the stairs.”
