Chapter 10 A Perfect Match

Evelyn blinked, caught off guard, and looked over at Philip.

Then, she changed her answer. “Walking by myself sounds kinda dull anyway.”

“Exactly! That’s why Boss is the perfect guy for the job,” Quincy added without missing a beat, enthusiastically recommending Philip.

Once the two of them left, Quade frowned from his bed. “Since when did you turn into such a bootlicker?”

Quincy lifted his chin with confidence. “You just don’t get it. If Boss had a girlfriend to balance him out, he wouldn’t be so intense all the time. Just like your dad. Or mine.”

Quade gave it a second thought and nodded.

That made sense. Philip needed someone to calm him down.

Otherwise, dealing with his serious face during training would drive everyone crazy.

Evelyn and Philip walked quietly toward the professor’s office.

It was just a short stroll through the small garden from the infirmary.

Neither of them said anything, but even the silence felt nice to Evelyn.

When they reached the office door, she was about to say goodbye when she accidentally bumped into someone coming out.

It was Alice.

The hit made them both stumble a few steps back.

Philip was quick. He reached out and steadied Evelyn by the shoulder,

Alice wasn’t so lucky.

She didn’t fall, but she crashed into a trash can behind her, wincing from the pain.

To make it worse, her hand landed on some spit on the lid, and the smell almost made her gag.

Furious, she looked up, ready to lash out.

But when she saw it was Evelyn, her face shifted nervously.

That flicker of nervousness vanished instantly. Alice put on her usual sweet and well-behaved smile, pretending to care. “Evelyn, are you alright? Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention… Who is he?”

She had noticed how natural Philip’s hand looked resting on Evelyn’s shoulder. It was way too natural to be

casual.

Chapter 10 A Perfect Match

Evelyn saw right through Alice’s scheme.

She flashed a bright smile, her fair and delicate features carrying a hint of girlish shyness. Leaning her head against Philip’s chest, she said, “Pretty much what it looks like. It’s him.”

Seriously? That barely answered anything!

Still, it triggered something in Alice’s memory.

Seth once said that when Evelyn dumped him, she clung to a guy in a military uniform and said she was

into him now.

Alice couldn’t remember the guy’s name, but seeing him in uniform now made it click.

She used to think Evelyn was just bluffing, but it turned out she did find herself a soldier boyfriend.

Ugh, what a shameless move!

While Alice silently fumed, a little bitterness crept in.

The two were standing way too close. If she didn’t react, it’d look like she was giving them her blessing.

So, she shifted her expression, trying to seem worried and understanding.

“Evelyn, I know you’re still upset with Seth, but he’s trying hard to win you back. Don’t be impulsive. This isn’t good for anyone.”

Her voice was soft and comforting, but her words were aimed straight at Philip.

Alice was implying that Evelyn was using him to get back at Seth.

If Seth won her over again, she’d ditch Philip in a heartbeat.

Alice figured she had made her point and that Philip would pick up on it.

But he didn’t even flinch.

Evelyn glanced at him and asked, “So, do you think I’m impulsive?”

He gave a short nod. “Yeah, you are.”

Alice lit up inside, thinking her plan to stir things up was working.

But then Philip dropped a comment that threw her.

“You were so impulsive to choose a boyfriend like that.”

And honestly, he wasn’t wrong.

Evelyn cracked up, liking him even more.

Meanwhile, Alice was unhappy.

Her smile froze awkwardly, clearly displeased.

She couldn’t win Evelyn over, and now the guy she brought along wasn’t any easier to deal with.

If she didn’t step up, she’d get nowhere.

That thought made Alice decide it wasn’t worth sticking around any longer.

“I’ll head off now. You guys go ahead.”

Without waiting, she quickly walked away.

Philip was about to leave as well.

He’d already brought Evelyn to the professor, so his part was done. Now he wanted to check on Quade.

Evelyn watched him walk off until he turned a corner, then turned and stepped into the office.

But something had piqued her curiosity.

Alice barely ever showed up to class, but she had come here to see the professor.

Inside the office, Evelyn didn’t rush to ask. She started talking to the professor about wanting to intern at the military hospital.

The professor she met with was Bethany Lloyd, who was in her 50s.

In her previous life, after Evelyn got kicked out, Bethany was the one who introduced her to volunteering at nursing homes and orphanages.

Bethany always said that it didn’t matter whether someone worked on the front lines or not. What mattered was spreading the spirit of medicine and helping others live better, healthier lives.

That was the core of it.

Evelyn was thankful to Bethany. Even now, she treated her with the utmost respect.

Bethany listened carefully, gently rubbing her chin as she thought it over. “Military hospitals are a lot more intense than regular ones. The soldiers there face all kinds of injuries, and most of them are desperate to get back on their feet. You’ll need a lot more patience and effort to keep up.”

Being a military doctor was no walk in the park.

Even without war, soldiers got hurt all the time.

Evelyn had made up her mind.

Staying near Philip might help her stop the horrible things that happened to him in his previous life. Maybe this time, he wouldn’t have to sacrifice himself.

“I’ve made my decision, Professor Lloyd,” Evelyn said seriously.

Bethany didn’t try to stop her. “I’ll write you a recommendation. With your grades, getting placed there

won’t be a problem. The rest depends on your efforts.”

“I won’t disappoint you,” Evelyn promised.

Then, she asked casually, “I saw my sister just now. Was she also asking about internship stuff?”

“No, she was just dropping off some lecture notes. I left a book behind and didn’t even notice. I could’ve sworn I didn’t take it to class. Am I losing my memory?”

Evelyn chuckled. “Didn’t you win the staff recitation contest this year? If you’re getting forgetful, the oth professors are gonna freak out.”

Bethany laughed. “You’re such a sweet talker.”

The atmosphere felt light and cheerful. But under the desk, Evelyn clenched her hands slightly.

It seemed that Alice’s plan had already started.
