When I got in Lucas’s car, chills ran down my spine. 

Two lifetimes, and everyone still said the same things about Lucas Kane. 

Not into women. Ruthlessly decisive. Cold as ice. 

Something about this guy made the temperature in the car feel like it dropped ten degrees. 

Lucas stayed quiet for way too long. I forced myself to break the silence. 

“Mr… Mr. Kane, thanks for picking me up. You…” 

But before I could finish, Lucas cut me off with that ice-cold voice. 

“You sure about this? Really wanna marry me?” 

He didn’t waste time with small talk. I was so caught off guard that I just nodded. 

In the dim light, I couldn’t make out his expression. Just heard his voice again. 

“Fine. Go home and rest up. I’ll come get you in a few days once I wrap up some business.” 

Before I could figure out what the hell he meant, Lucas hit the gas and drove me home. 

Three days later, Lucas showed up exactly when he said he would and brought me to his place. Said we needed to “get to know each other better.” 

Even now, the whole thing feels like some weird dream. 

What I didn’t know was that the Morrison house had turned into a complete shitshow at the same time. 

Xavier stared at his assistant in complete disbelief. 

What did you just say? Toni’s marrying who?” 

The assistant was practically shaking. 

Lucas… Lucas Kane, Head of Kane Industries.” 

Xavier just stood there frozen, ears ringing, totally speechless. 

But Sophie, standing right next to him, actually laughed.

“Miss Sterling’s really something else. After crushing on you for years, now she’s trying to play hard to get.” 

“Don’t worry about it, Mr. Morrison. Miss Sterling’s obviously just pissed at me. 

Next time she comes around, I’ll explain everything to her. 

This is all my fault – if I hadn’t told you about Miss Sterling punishing me, none of this would’ve happened.” 

Xavier said nothing, the assistant’s words still echoing in his head. 

After eighteen years, Xavier knew her better than anyone. 

Toni Sterling had been spoiled rotten her whole life. There was literally nothing in this world she wanted 

that she couldn’t have. 

Xavier could still remember clear as day – Toni’s eighteenth birthday party. She’d walked up to him in that 

fancy dress, and even though her voice was soft, she was dead serious. 

“Xavier, my feelings for you are my own business. Even if you don’t like me back, I’m still gonna stick 

around.” 

“You don’t need to push me away. If I ever stop loving you, I’ll leave on my own.” 

Thinking about those words now, Xavier felt cold sweat running down his back. 

Toni’s love had always been straightforward and honest. 

She’d never stoop to playing games like this. 

When Xavier didn’t respond, Sophie started to panic. 

“Mr. Morrison, you’re not actually falling for her tricks, are you? I guess that makes sense – you’re a guy, you wouldn’t understand how women operate. I’ve met tons of girls like Miss Sterling. They use these tactics to 

manipulate men.” 

Hearing Sophie talk like that made Xavier feel inexplicably irritated. 

‘She’s not that kind of woman.” 

Sophie got freaked out by Xavier’s cold tone and quickly tried to cover her ass. 

‘Sorry, Mr. Morrison, that’s not what I meant…” 

‘But you really don’t need to worry about it. Miss Sterling’s been obsessed with you forever, and your families were gonna make it official. No way she’d actually marry some Kane dude. She’s just pissed at you, 

she…”

This time Xavier couldn’t deal with her bullshit anymore. He stared Sophie down. 

“This is between ME and HER. Stay in your lane.” 

“And you know damn well why she’s mad at me, why we’ve been fighting.” 

Xavier started getting up. 

Sophie panicked hard, like everything was falling apart. 

She put on that sad puppy dog look again. 

“Mr. Morrison, my stomach really hurts, I…” 

She thought she still had Xavier eating out of her hand, but her nasty attitude had already made him suspicious. 

Once that sweet innocent act starts falling apart, a smart guy like Xavier wasn’t gonna keep spoiling her. 

So this time, Xavier shut her down completely. 

“Call a damn doctor. That’s not my problem.” 

Without even looking at Sophie’s hurt face, Xavier walked straight out. 

Once he got outside, Xavier stopped and stared back at the bedroom door, like he could see right through it. 

He was totally losing it now. 

He turned to his assistant, practically spitting out the words. 

“Find out what the fuck has been going on!” 

“I want every goddamn detail!”
