Chapter 110
In that instant,all the sound in the hospital room seemed to stop.
Fiona didn’t understand,not knowing which plane he was talking about,nor that I had already gone abroad.
“What plane?“Jason’s voice was low and hoarse,as if squeezed from deep within his throat.
“The flight Miss Callista took to Birlona crashed–every passenger perished.”
The air seemed to explode and all three of them nearly changed expression at the same time.
Ethan sprang to his feet,his voice icy as he demanded,“What did you say?“}
The assistant’s voice trembled.“The news has been confirmed…the plane crashed into the mountains on the border of Damastam.Rescue teams are already on route…”
Before he could finish,Simon had already rushed out the door,his voice hoarse.“Drive!Go to the scene!“}
Jason stood frozen in place,the roar in his ears deafening. He felt as if his heart had been ripped out,struggling to breathe.
Under the night sky,the mountain wind howled and the mountains were illuminated in a ghastly white.
The three men almost stormed into the rescue area by force. The rescuers tried to stop them.”
“This area is dangerous!Unauthorized personnel cannot enter!“}
“We are not unauthorized personnel!“Simon shouted, his eyes bloodshot.“That’s our sister in there!I’m going in!” Jason said nothing,but his eyes were red as he yanked a rescue rope and tied it around his waist,his voice hoarse.“Let anyone try to stop me!“}
The rescuers had no choice but to grudgingly allow them to assist from the perimeter. And so, they watched with their own eyes as bag after bag of belongings was carried out.”
Watches,wallets,wedding rings,charms…each item bore stains of blood and ash.
“That’s my husband’s…”
“That’s my daughter’s backpack…”
The cries echoing across the mountains almost tore the air apart.”
The three men felt as if their hearts were being squeezed by iron clamps, leaving them gasping for breath.”
They could hardly bear to look,hardly dared to imagine–what if the next bag carried my belongings?”
What if that bag contained my necklace,my clothes?”
How…could they possibly endure it?
For the first time, Ethan fell to his knees in the mud,hands pressed against the ground,breathing ragged.”
Simon turned his back,eyes bloodshot,clenching his teeth so tightly that no tears could fall.”
Jason gripped his fists even tighter,his nails digging into his palms.”
He knew–if he saw my body,he would lose his mind.
I had lived so cautiously,never asking for anything. And yet he had once personally pushed me into the abyss.\
The mountain wind whimpered,flames flickered and the night stretched like an endless grave.”
The three of them,clad in rescue team vests,scrambled and hauled through the debris, each cough from the smoke–wreathed air tearing at their lungs.
Every second was sheer torment.<
A rescuer carefully set down a bag.“These…are the recovered belongings.“N
The three of them lunged forward,eyes fixed on it.”
Not mine.[
Yet they didn’t feel any relief;only a growing sense of panic. Was no belongings a good thing,or a bad thing?
The night wind cut to the bone as they stumbled across the charred mountainside, fingertips torn,clothes caked with ash.
But no one stopped.
Because they knew–to stop would mean accepting it.N
It meant acknowledging the cruel truth. that I might already be gone.
Jason stood atop the mountain,staring down at the pitch–black crash valley.N
The wind howled past,like countless wailing ghosts.N
Just standing there,he was almost unable to bear it.
And me?How terrified would I have been while falling?N
Did I ever think of calling for help?!!
Did I ever think,“I’ll never see them again“?”
Jason’s heart tore apart inch by inch.
If only back then he hadn’t followed the Corvin Family in treating me coldly, if only he had realized his own feelings sooner,would I have never boarded that flight?
Would I still be alive now?”
