Eugene let out a short laugh.“I dropped everything and raced over here, and you chewed me out?”
“You came for Christopher. Not for me.”
“Am I wrong?”
“No, you’re not.” Eugene scanned the bedroom.“Where is Christopher?”
“You didn’t see him when you came in?”
“No. Empty driveway, empty living room.”
“Then he’s probably in the garage. Talking to his mistress.”
Eugene relaxed slightly. “That girl… Latoya, right? I owe her a thank you sometime.”
“Don’t worry. You’ll have plenty of chances. Though you might have to start calling her ‘Mrs. Foret‘.”
“Sure. The minute your divorce is final, I’ll switch.”
Rosalind didn’t respond, just looked up at him.
Eugene raised an eyebrow.“What? Never seen a handsome man before?”
“Are you really friends?”
“What else?”
Eugene’s face darkened instantly.“Wipe that disgusting image out of your head. Now.”
Rosalind pursed her lips.“How’d you know what I was picturing?”
“Hard to guess?” Eugene suddenly turned serious.“You two didn’t do anything, right?”
Rosalind sighed. “Relax. Your precious friend got summoned by his mistress before anything could happen.”
Eugene nodded. “Good.
“Though I doubt he’s been a saint in Latoya’s arms these past months.”
“Eh. Doesn’t bother me.”
Rosalind studied him.“You care so much about me, but Christopher can screw whoever? Do I carry plague? Seriously, Benitez, why the lifelong campaign to split us up? What did I ever do to you?”
Eugene’s gaze held hers for a beat. “Ever think maybe you’re the one I care about?”

“I haven’t lost my mind.”
“No. Just slow.” Eugene looked away, turning his back.“Worried Christopher might catch your brand of stupid. Turn a perfectly good CEO into a babbling idiot, end up needing help to tie his shoes,”
“Wish him better than that. If you’re so worried, why not take one for the team? Save your buddy. Better bent than brain–dead, right?”
Eugene burst out laughing.“Everyone thinks you’re this sweet, quiet thing. They should see you now, claws out and tongue sharp.”
“See what?” Christopher’s voice cut in.
He stood in the doorway, phone in hand, surprised.“Eugene? What brings you here?”
Rosalind smiled. “Your best friend has a life–altering announcement.”
“Turning him gay? Now that’s truly life–altering,” she thought.
Christopher, however, had a different thought.“Life–altering? That woman you’ve waited over a decade for finally got divorced?”
Eugene paused. “Getting there.”
“Finally! Patience paid off. Congrats.”
Rosalind feigned shock.“Mr. Benitez! A taste for married women? How unconventional.”
Eugene shot her a look.“Adults talking. Zip it.”
