Perhaps it was the alcohol, but seeing Claudine like that, Damian actually felt a pang of pity.

He walked over to Claudine and gently brushed her cheek with the back of his hand.

Claudine turned away in disgust.

The man’s hand fell into empty air.

Damian’s eyes trembled slightly as he spoke.

“What happened to your brother isn’t what you think.”

Seeing that Claudine remained silent, Damian sat down in front of her.

“Back then, when you insisted on divorcing me, I contacted your father only hoping he could talk some sense into you. I even promised him that as long as you gave up the idea of divorce, I would provide the technical support he al- ways wanted for his project.”

“I never expected that he would use my name to go after your brother’s company.”

Seeing Claudine still not speaking, Damian frowned.

He had never been patient with women, nor had he ever explained himself to one.

But since he wanted to make things work with Claudine, he knew he had to make things clear.

He continued speaking.

“Although your brother’s incident had nothing to do with me, he should have told you that it was thanks to my inter- vention that things were resolved smoothly in the end.”

At this point, he instinctively wanted to add that as long as their marriage was maintained, both of them-and even both families’ businesses-could thrive.

But he knew Claudine disliked hearing that.

In Claudine’s heart, she believed that love was the key to sustaining a marriage.

Yet ironically, love was the very thing he trusted the least!

At this moment, Claudine still wore that indifferent expression. Her unyielding attitude left Damian with even less pa-

tience than usual.

Out of habit, he reached into his pocket for a pack of cigarettes, deftly flicked one out, and held it between his lips.

The lighter’s flame briefly illuminated both their faces.

Damian lifted his eyelids, his gaze sweeping over the woman before him, noticing the slight furrow in her brows.

He did not light the cigarette.

Since she didn’t like him smoking, he wouldn’t smoke.

“I’ve already spoken to your father. He won’t trouble your brother anymore. In the next few days, I’ll stay in Reedport and introduce your brother to some business contacts.”

Claudine finally turned around.

“Do you know why my father used your name to go after my brother’s company?”

Damian’s lips curled into a cold smile. “What other reason could there be? He thinks your brother is disobedient?”

At that moment, Damian thought of himself.

The difference was, compared to Clayton, his own father had only brought Theodore into the company to oppose him, while Clayton… his methods were far more ruthless.

Claudine spoke calmly.

“You’re only half right.”

Damian didn’t know much about the Hogan family’s affairs, but since Claudine wanted to talk, he was willing to lis-

ten.

“My father has another illegitimate son.”

He did this to pave the way for that illegitimate son.”

Damian frowned.

Clayton actually had an illegitimate son?

There had always been rumors that Clayton adored his wife, loving her as if she were his life, year after year.

So all of that was a lie?

Claudine saw the confusion in Damian’s eyes. She turned her face toward the window and continued.

“My mother never knew about this. She was deceived for thirty years. She always thought my father loved her deeply,”

Damian, let’s make a deal.

“Just as you said, I’ll cooperate with you and play the role of ‘Mrs. Barrette’ well, but you have to help me with some- thing too.”

Damian looked at the woman before him, so calm and rational as she negotiated with him.

He was surprised to find that instead of feeling pleased, he was actually a bit angry, even…

A little disappointed.

He suppressed those emotions and spoke.

“Go ahead.”

Claudine said, “I want you to help my brother seize control of the Hogan Group and push Clayton out.”

Claudine lifted her head.

For the first time in a long while, she looked at him with such calm eyes.

Damian frowned.

“Are you making a deal with me?”

Claudine replied, “Weren’t you the one who started making deals with me?”

“When I asked for a divorce, you tried everything to stop me. You said we were the most suitable couple in the world, and that you wanted to make things work with me.

“Now, I’m doing as you wished, agreeing to stay with you, each of us getting what we want. So why are you unhappy again?

“Damian, what is it that you really want?”

Claudine’s words left Damian speechless.

Yes!

What did he really want!

Isn’t this the outcome he had always wanted?

No!

What he wanted was the woman who used to love him with all her heart and soul, his devoted wife.
