Audrey hurried to shield the dog. 

The vase shattered on the floor, and the scattered shards cut Audrey’s hand. 

Her fair fingers were quickly stained with bright red blood.

The sudden commotion also startled Darlene, who shuddered in her sleep. 

Damian soothed the child and laid her gently on the bed in the bedroom.

When Damian came out of the bedroom, he was already dressed.
