“Mr. Brooks, how about I keep you company? I’m good at this, too.”

Just then, someone ran in and shouted, “Hey, go check it out. Is that Ethan’s sister downstairs?”

Ethan threw down the cue stick, “Who’s sister? I don’t have a sister.”

“Ugh, it’s Harper.”

“What did she do now? What’s the drama?”

Ethan’s brows furrowed in irritation as he walked over. The person added, “Nothing much, just looks like she got

frozen.”

The villa was temperature-controlled, but the outdoor mountain temperature was close to zero degrees. Harper was wearing very thin clothes when she was dragged away. She had walked up from the beach below the mountain.

She was thrown into the sea by Sophia and a group of people, including Noah’s girlfriend. She was made to stand in the sea, with waves crashing against her legs. The cold was piercing, and every time she tried to get to shore, Sophia would use a laser pointer to blind her temporarily. The bright light caused her to fall into the sea several times. During the high tide at night, she almost froze or drowned to death.

When she came back, she was, of course, in a miserable state.

Walking into the lobby of the north building, everyone looked over. People were everywhere, upstairs and down- stairs, in layers, all laughing at her and gossiping. The sound was like waves, rising and falling, and even colder than the sea tide.

Harper didn’t look up. She didn’t stop even when she passed by Mason, who had a woman standing next to him. She didn’t care anymore.

She endured the stares and ridicule from all directions and went back to her room.

This time, even Ethan was speechless. He patted Mason’s shoulder, “How could she- I didn’t expect this.

Mason took his hand off, his tone as cold as the temperature around Harper, “Are you satisfied now?”

He was asking Ethan, but also himself.

After soaking in the seawater for so long, even someone with the best physical fitness would fall seriously ill.

That night, Harper developed a high fever.

Ethan called the doctor from the villa, gave her antipyretics, and administered an injection, but the fever didn’t sub- side at all. Harper’s cheeks were flushed, and her temperature was extremely high.

It was fine to play tricks on her, but if she ended up dead, it wouldn’t be acceptable to Ava.

Harper’s body alternated between chills and fever. Her lips were dry, and she muttered something in her delirium, her voice very faint, as if she were in a state of fear, her facial features tightly furrowed.

When Mason entered, Ethan was standing by the bedside, annoyed and unsure how to handle the situation.

“If the fever continues, won’t it damage her health?”

The doctor appeared quite embarrassed, “It depends on the patient. Maybe it will subside in a while.”

“Maybe?” Ethan’s deep voice lowered the temperature in the room, “And if it doesn’t subside and she gets damaged, who will be responsible, you?”

He wasn’t worried about Harper; he just didn’t want to face Ava’s blame if things got out of hand.

With a flicker in his eyes, he turned to Mason, “Why don’t you take her to the hospital? That way, even if my mom finds out, she won’t take it out on you.”

“Me?” Mason gave a cold smile, “Why should I save her?”

Among so many people, he was probably the one who wanted Harper to die the most, to die completely. If he were to take her down the mountain, it would be his kindness not to dump her body in the wilderness halfway.

Ethan was practically begging him, “Do it for me. Besides, if she really dies, what fun will we have left?”

After much persuasion, Mason finally agreed.

Harper was loaded into the car and lay in the back seat. Only when she was so close did Mason realize how much weight she had lost. As a child, she was a plump and delicate girl. Every time she hugged his arm, it felt soft, with smooth and delicate skin. No matter how many times she was pushed away, she would still throw herself at him with-

out hesitation the next time.
